A new design is illustrious because it really does a lot to change the feel of the phone. You feel like you've got something new. It's like getting new clothes.

I'm a high school teacher, I can tell you that even teenagers aren't that impressed by someone having the latest iPhone anymore. Nearly all of them have smartphones and at least half of them are iPhones. They've become pretty mundane.

In a high school cafeteria near you, joeblow.

Whatever drugs the people are on that have already decided that the 7 isn't a worthy upgrade before it has even been announced, they really need to step away and reassess their life.

Wait until it comes out and then decide what YOU want to do. There is no right answer on which phone to get and I am convinced that next year we will get just another iphone. the "anniversary phone" is nothing more than hopes and dreams.
People are right to be disappointed. It's almost certain that the design will be the same. That's the biggest disappointment.

Maybe, just maybe, because most of us use it as a telephone, email, iMessage device and not a status symbol that you wave around in public saying ... hey, look at me!
Hm. That's even more shabby. You don't have to wave it around. You just take the status symbol and sit it right in your lap without thinking twice.

For people like you who do not have a smart phone, not waiting for the "iPhone 8" certainly makes sense. But what about those that already have a phone that makes phone calls, checks email, and sends messages?

You must be new to this. This close to announcement, there is very little that is going to be much of a surprise.

Microsoft did this with the Xbox One S. "We're coming out with this device, but the real new Xbox is coming after that."

Well, then why come out with the product at all? Now that we KNOW about the iPhone 8, we're not going to buy this phone WE'RE GONNA WAIT.

If you look at the phone, it looks just like an iPhone 6s. And with what we've been hearing, it pretty much IS an iPhone 6sII.

It's literally the nothing new iPhone. They did this before with the infamous "iPad 3"

...and Apple will literally sell millions of iPhone 7 units regardless.

More people will appreciate the iPhone 7 form factor once iPhone 8 is released. Keep making your rants about iPhone 7 looking the same. Most people here don't have much foresight. Once the "Samsung" iPhone 8 gets released, back to the same crying with shattered glass like we had with the iPhone 4 series.

Even if Apple happens to wow us...

2016 - iPhone 7 (that looks like the 6 series)
2017 - iPhone 8
2018 - iPhone 8s
2019 - iPhone 9 (that looks like the 8 series)

Apple will reuse the design again anyway but be the STRONGER twin. I don't understand people complaining about the 7 design when nobody complains at MacBooks and iPads looking the same for years. Is that rear back that most people cover up so important to some of you that it needs to change every two years? Automobile makers don't change it up every few years either, why should Apple be obliged to change it every few years?

Both iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 are a waste of money or time to wait on... Several Android OEM's make better-looking phones at a lower cost with the same features Apple tacks on years later. Since this site is North American-centric, iPhone is really the only phones most people see or want to use since it is the only one they are familiar with.

In Asia, more competitive industry like a 20-horse Kentucky Derby field. I see people carrying a variety of brands. I do see that iPhones are quite common but it isn't the most dominant like the States where it seems like match race between Apple and Samsung.

American phone market is boring because it is a duopoly. It needs to be more competitive like what we see in China where a different OEM tops every new year. More competition means more motivation for fat cats to make changes.

iPhone 4/4S may have been the most shatter prone, but it's also widely regarded as the best looking iPhone to date. I'd gladly go back to a glass iPhone... With Apple Care of course.

Just because an iPhone looks the same doesn't mean it will function the same. Technically, all iPhones get updated every year except iPhone 5 to 5c which took a step backwards in design but essentially was a 5. The 3Gs got updated longer than the 3G. The 4s got updated longer than the 4. The 5s will probably get updated longer than the 5 thanks to the 64-bit, A7. The SE will probably get updated longer than the 5s.

Then say we get the major update we want with the iPhone 8? The Samsung Galaxy iPhone S8. What next? 8s which will probably look like it. New external design is no big deal. SE gets praised but 7 gets ridiculed? You will still be using iOS practically the same way just a little faster this time similar to buying a new iPad which essentially looks the same from the previous one. All iPhones get updated every year if you weren't shallow enough to realize that.

Apple has not mentioned anything about the 2017 iPhone or the 2018 iPhone. All we can safely assume is that the the next iPhone will be "better" than the current iPhone. Everything apart from that is speculation.

This is nothing like Microsoft announcing the Xbox One S. Apple haven't announced ANYTHING. It would simply be stupid to wait a year for a phone because "it will be better than the last one".

Most people use their iPhones as a tool, a communications device. It's no longer a status symbol, because everyone and their grandma has one.

Xbox' target market are all gamers, and they all know what to look for.
iPhone's target market are general public, and most don't know nor care. They buy a phone when they want one.

Imagine that, an average person who doesn't hang out in tech forums, buys a phone when they want one. Sometimes the obvious has to be stated.

A huge slab of touch screen. That's what phones have become now. Really?! What amazing design are you expecting?! Usability is far more important than just changing things around for the sake of it.

iphone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6

All of those are a "huge slab of touch screen" are you trying to say they all look the same?

If yes, you need glasses
If no, you just answered your own question

Either way, it shows your post is rather nonsensical no matter the perspective.

There are only so many ways a rectangular shape can be designed without affecting usability. If you're not from product design field then please don't be arrogant about things that you don't understand.

So that was it then? They hit the limit at 5 designs? That's the magic number? Beyond that it affects usability? Enlighten me please, since this post appears to claim you understand how these things work. How did you come to this determination that they can no longer make significant design changes after their 5th go-around?

I'm not saying they can't change the design, I'm saying it may not be as significant as it has been in the past. Look at the design between the iPhone 4 series and the 5 series. They're technically sharp cornered rectangles, the major difference is only the material.

Similarly the original iPhone and iPhone 3G series were with carved sides. Although 3GS had a bit of hump at the back. iPhone 6 series is the same curved corners. In a roundabout way, that is all you got.

Changing materials ain't really revolutionary design.

Samsung with their edge series tried to change this but they've sacrificed a lot of usability with the screen bending all the way.

Other than that, every other smartphone is just huge slabs. Some have a littler bend on the corners and some with just sharp edges.

Many argue they gained usability with the edge screen, so that's a matter of perspective.
