Wi-Fi Router Issue Fix Coming For LG's UltraFine 27-inch 5K Display

I purchased this display for use with me 15 inch touchbar MBP. I haven't seen the issues described by a lot of people as far as the display causing my machine to lock up, but I have seen the display flicker from time to time, more than likely because of my mesh wifi network. I just got off chat with both Apple and LG. Apple will not deal with the issue at all and you have to be in within 14 days of purchase to deal with a refund. LG is not currently prepared to deal with the issue. They will send you a shipping label to have your display sent to them where they will add the heat shielding, but they don't have a timeline on how long that will take. Because the display is still back-ordered they do not have any new displays to replace it with, so there is a chance you will receive a refurbished display if you opt to get a 'new' display that has the heat sheilding. I expect that they will have an assessment of how to move forward with this issue by the end of next week but don't quote me on that.

I understand we're on the internet where it's absolutely necessary for every comment to be turned up to 11. I mean, without that, what would we do multi-syllable words like astonishing, incredulous, and amateurish? That being said, there's a reason that first adopters are colloquially <--syllables, mmmmm, delicious-- known as beta testers. Companies test for as many things as possible realizing real world scenarios that expose issues are only going to come in the real world. That's not to excuse LG, Apple, or any other company. It just is what it is. Think of all the tech products you own. Can you find one that didn't have a documented issue that probably should have been caught in QA (caught according to public perception)? I can't.

I agree with you that they knew the problem existed at launch. They knew before launch*. But as you said, the rush to get product on the street overruled delaying to fix. I'm guessing the business calculus said it would cost more in delays and materials to fix before shipping. Stupid. It's the main reason I almost never buy 1st gen during 1st run.

* A super brief bullet point buried on page 5 of the owners manual tells you to: Install the product where no Electromagnetic Interference occurs. It doesn't specifically mention routers but they were aware some issues could occur.

Wow. Sorry about that. I was only building on your point and adding my own. Apologies if you didn't approve of my choice of words :D

Apple actually contributed a lot of engineering effort to these monitors (instead of just making and selling one their damn selves, Thanks Tim Cook). This is where rumors of Apple making new 5K monitors came from by the way.

Surprised this wasn't found earlier. Note how the blame is on "Apple approved" displays. As if LG had no idea about RF interference being an issue, and Apple should have known better, so go yell at them.

LG do indeed make fantastic TVs. But making a computer monitor that can't be placed within two meters of a router is...well...I'm trying to think of a word that won't confuse Mr. Mustang. Silly?

So I realize that this is a 5k owners thread, but I wanted to comment on some fairly serious issues with the 4K as well. . . My AirPort Extreme is in a completely different room, so that's not the cause, however, with my 2016 13" Touch Bar in clamshell mode, there are a lot of times when the display won't wake up with my Apple Wireless Keyboard, or Magic Trackpad. . . So my thoughts are "I'll open the MacBook Pro, unplug the display and all will be happy". Wrong....

The touch bar and keyboard will light up, but the MacBook Pro screen will remain black... I have to force restart the Mac before it will come back on. . . . Funny that I sold my 29" UltraWide LG Display because of the exact same issues with the Apple MultiPort AV Adapter over HDMI. . . . The same monitor worked flawlessly with my 2015 15" MacBook Pro over HDMI...

I just don't get it. . . Do any of you 5k owners have issues like those described above?

Thanks!

You have absolutely no reason to apologize. Your choice of words is your own, as is mine. I just have a bee in the bonnet about hyperbole and how pervasive it is. Everything on the internet seems to be turned to a volume of 11 when most things can get by at a 4. We're not breaking up, but I will borrow a phrase from a dissolved relationship. "It's not you, it's me.":) Unfortunately, I have two issues: hyperbole and scotch, and the issue with scotch only surfaces when I'm out of scotch. Cheers.

The most recent macOS update is supposed to fix a lot of sleep/wake issues, and did for me with my 4K monitor. But also, verify that you aren't using your MacBook in clamshell mode on top off - or very close to - the display's metal stand, for it triggers the MacBook's closed-lid magnet detection, and puts the MacBook to sleep.

I'm old enough to remember the former Goldstar then Lucky/Goldstar that became LG. There's a reason I don't own a single LG product today...

Every flatscreen TV/LCD TV I've ever owned are LGs.
I've got nothing but great things to say about them "today".

Manufacturing hitches happen as gadgets get more and more complicated.
Don't forget bendgate and antennagate from the great American company that is Apple Inc.

Apple users getting a taste of the PC world...

Except if it wasn't the "monitor sold by Apple", it would never get "semi-recalled".

Dear Apple,

It's the quality control, stupid. Thanx, bye.

Dear @VulchR

It's LG, not Apple. Thanx, bye.

Quick question. What kind of keyboard and mouse combination is everyone using with these monitors? Any recommendations?
I'm using a wired Apple keyboard plugged into the back of the 5K (with USB-C adapter). Then a wireless Logitech mouse with the USB dongle plugged into the Keyboard's right USB port.

Works great while using MBP in clamshell mode

Ridiculous how expensive a dedicated 5K display is. Meanwhile, you can buy a 5K iMac for not much more, $1275 (plus tax) from NewEgg.

They **** things up just like Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Ikea, etc. All companies make mistakes... cuz people. How they respond to the mistake is what's important.
Okay, so how are they dealing with it?
Ship it to us, wait for how many days or weeks while not having a monitor and get a repaired unit?

How they SHOULD deal with this:
Ship out new units to customers and provide return labels for the old ones, so you don't have to be without your product for potentially weeks.

Edit: Oh, it keeps getting better and better. They are still selling displays produced before Feb. They must be kidding.

A display with no sheilding? I suppose they were trying provide a low cost monitor to the consumer by cutting back on expensive materials like tin.

Maybe they didn't use the shielding because leaving it off allowed them to make the monitor thinner and lighter, and they thought Apple's customers would appreciate that more. <smirk>
