They're the new Microsoft. It's going to be fun watching them fall too.

Yup. They've posted record profits every quarter, but clearly, them denying this Wi-Fi syncing app is a sign that they're doomed. Makes sense.

People are making this more complicated than it needs to be. Either Apple is coming out with this or the app had flaws. We don't know the whole story. You really think Apple saw this app and thought, "Wi-Fi sync? That's a great idea! Why didn't we think of that?" Of course they've been brewing it up. They just have to do it the right way. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to have this app, I'm just saying there's way more to the story.

And when is apple open about anything, imagine if governments where like that, oh wait some are, and look how bad life is for the populous.

I'm talking about "US" as consumers being open rather than showing so much hate. There's 2 sides to the coin. Again, nobody here knows the full reasons behind the rejection, but I have to wonder why some people here even remain a customer of Apple. It's not that they are doing the usual complaining, it's more like HATE. As soon as Apple does something that "appears" to be against what the customers want then these hate posts show up here. Just doesn't make sense.

"Security issues"?? Apple, give me a break. If you are going to give a reason, give the real one, not some BS excuse.

I would jailbreak just for this, but $10 for an app that Apple will likely make obsolete is too much.

Basically, every step of the way, this is slower. Sometimes I wonder if anyone actually thinks before they form a knee-jerk opinion.

So wait, because something has cons we shouldn't have a positive opinion ? Again, a MacRumors members that thinks that because he wouldn't use a product that no one would have any use for it. The prevalent Apple mentality. One size fits all. Think Conservative.

Also, because you use it sometimes to sync over the air, doesn't mean that somehow, USB gets disabled permanently. I use Wi-Fi to access my NAS at home. However, if I have something big to copy over, I plug my laptop into the Ethernet. Choices are good. It would sure suck that Apple removed the Ethernet port on Macbooks because JAT doesn't like having to run Cat5e cables.

My guess about the security has to do with being able to sync your iPhone with any computer and it doesn't require an identifier. If that's the case then I wouldn't like that at all. The one thing that gave me hope was when my iPod Touch got stolen, all my songs and personal info were on it. Whoever stole it wouldn't have access to my info because iTunes requires the iPod to be erased and re-synced when connected to a different computer.
Let's not go there that there are ways to get around it, I'm suspecting that most thieves aren't your typical geek.

stupid decision, unless they're going to eventually allow us to sync via wifi. Gonna grab this off Cydia.

Also, because you use it sometimes to sync over the air, doesn't mean that somehow, USB gets disabled permanently.

This.

There are many times when I want to sync my iPod just for calendars, which would be a very small sync and work fine over wifi, but I've been too lazy to plug the thing in.

There is nothing to sync when I'm not on my computer anyway. I'll stick with USB.

I take down notes, I add phone numbers to contacts, change phone numbers on others, add contacts. I rate songs, make up playlists.

I might not have files to sync, but not everything I sync is from the computer to the device. Sometimes I sync the device back.

Yeah I think its worth it. I just hope more things get added. Right now you launch the app on your phone then click sync on your mac. In that time you could connect a wire. Regardless, it works how it should and is a lot faster than I expected.

No, you don't. And some of the web reports state that you must manually approve each sync on a Mac which isn't true either!

This is a fantastic add-on, worth every penny. Sync is as simple as pairing your device ONCE and then simply launching the app for future syncs. It also allows you to disable those pesky backups for faster syncing. Love it!

Pretty sure I pointed out that I was talking about usage. And no, I don't see how this could be useful, because I can't find any pros. Choice is all neato, but choices that are pointless don't make the world go round.

Please come up with a scenario where wireless syncing is truly useful. If you put something new on the computer (address, download song, etc., like your other post) and want to sync it quick, aren't you already sitting there? What, then walk away just to make sure you can be "cool" and use wireless syncing, instead? If you are doing a major sync, swapping out several GBs of music, the battery wastage pretty much nullifies any wonderfulness the wireless gives you. And what if it runs out of juice? If you are just going to sync every night, you want to charge also.

Ok, just had a random thought. I suppose if you are using one of those wireless Powermats (is there one for iPxxx?), then I could see this being slightly beneficial. But you still have to put the device in a certain spot, which sounds just like a dock to me.

Choices are good. It would sure suck that Apple removed the Ethernet port on Macbooks because JAT doesn't like having to run Cat5e cables.
Actually, I use ethernet far more than wireless at my house. And they did remove Firewire from many products, and that sucks, because I use that a lot, too. How about if we make choice useful? Find me a firewire SD card reader. There's a choice somebody should give us.

I believe apple rejected this app because what if some idiot only has 5% battery life and wants to sync his phone wireslessly and has about 20gigs or so. WHAT PROBLEMS COULD THERE BE IF THE PHONE DIES DURING SYNCING? If it was a tethered syncing, there wouldn't be a worry about the battery. There's only 5%, you're gonna have to plug that phone in anyways. Anyone wanna try and sync wirelessly using that app with 5% battery life and tell us what happens?

good question.. my guess is it would pop up saying unable to to wireless sync

Backups and app transferring take much longer then via the cable.

You can easily disable the backups for Wi-Fi syncs. The option is right there.

Second, if you have a modern high speed Wi-Fi network the sync is hardly slow. I synced several times and it was quite snappy, especially with backups turned off.

Most apps are only a couple MB. If you're loading Navigon or something of that sort, yeah, USB is a better choice. Or loading up songs to capacity, etc. But for everyday syncs (notes, bookmarks, podcasts, etc) it is quite fast.

I've been an Apple supporter for over 25 years. My whole career path has centered around Apple products so this is NOT a troll message. I guess I snapped out of my hypnosis. I'm no longer evangelizing Apple products to friends and family. The last few Apple-related blog/facebook posts I've made have been negative towards the company and I'm not the only one. Those of us who've been with Apple for so many years did so because we felt like they were different from the corporate money-grubbing ******s they were competing against. What we're seeing now is Apple becoming more and more like them. The quality of Apple's innovations are nothing short of breathtaking, but if the bald-faced censorship and moral policing get much worse, I fear for the future. It took a tipping point to make Apple as big as it is and it can take a tipping point to create a backlash. Once people start to feel too controlled (and word spreads quickly), people will turn away.

I come home from a business meeting. I only have a few minutes and need to go back out. I took down contact info during that meeting. The computer is upstairs, the USB cable is god knows where.

I hit sync on the phone as soon as it sees the wireless, the contact info is synced back and saved to my computer in case anything happens to the phone.

There is your dumb scenario. There are many other instances in which this is useful, you don't need particular scenarios.

And again, because JAT doesn't like it or see any pros, nobody should! JAT is always right, he's like a Steve Jr.

Get over yourself.

This is why having an Apple-owned content distribution system is a conflict of interests. Mobile Me? Who would get it if they had this app? Few. Yet the app does for $10 much of what Mobile Me does for $100/mo.

Hooray for competition and progress.

Exactly, me too. I no longer evangelize on behalf of Apple.

...and, trust me, I used to be a zealot.

Usage scenario: I listen to podcasts almost exclusively and download/sync daily. I have a script set to update the podcasts and sync my iPhone 30 minutes before I get up in the morning. With wired-only sync I can't use the phone to read a book in bed, play one last level of PvZ, etc. before falling asleep because it's plugged in to the computer.

That being said, the desktop software won't install for me and I'm worried about the dev's anti-piracy controls triggering a false positive so I'll continue my current routine of wired syncing.

People fighting over the internet, how cool! Here, have a cookie

Rejecting this app is so typical for Apple, yet so wrong. Here's hoping Apple either changes in a positive way that endorses creativity and innovation, or never gets as much market share as MS once had / still has.
It's sad to see a company that makes such great products turn into such a bad direction.

I should get over myself? LOL! You are the one saying I'm "always right", and comparing me to a billionaire megalomaniac. Guess maybe you should get over me.

I apologize for using the word scenario when obviously "instance" is more appropriate. Shall I go back and change my post for you?

And it's still slower. When I have only a few minutes, I want things faster. Guess that's just me.

I have a fundamental question for Apple's defenders right now:

At what point is enough enough? When will we, as Apple fans, say that the company has slidden too far down the censorship/control path?

Take the iTunes store as an example. What is the difference between, say, 2 Live Crew's song "Pop That P**y" and selling porn applications on the phone? Because one enters my ears and the other enters my eyes, the former is ok, the latter is not? What if Apple set up a Mac Apps Store and began controlling what types of applications could be sold on it (yes I'm aware that Steve said this wouldn't happen, but the fact that people are asking him shows the fear).

I'm still an Apple fan. But being a fan means wanting them to succeed and be better and that means offering criticism when they screw up. Bowing down to the almighty Steve is something that his paid employees can do after they check their souls in at the door when walking on campus. I'm a customer and I make my living on the Apple infrastructure. I have a vested interest in making sure that Steve doesn't get so drunk with power that he runs the company into the ground the same way he did with the Macintosh.

And it's still slower. When I have only a few minutes, I want things faster. Guess that's just me.

Finally, you got the point. Yes, it is just you. Now please stop thinking it's ok to limit other people's choice because of just you and we'll have made some real good progress here.

And it's still slower. When I have only a few minutes, I want things faster. Guess that's just me.

No one's saying you should use wireless sync to fill up your iPhone with 30 gigs of music and videos. Where wireless sync would come in handy is when you just have a few emails or contacts to sync over, and they're small enough that there would be no noticeable time difference.
