I didn't cause it. Someone else used their dirty shirt to clean the phone without my permission. I have been extremely careful with my phone.

I don't care too much if they don't refund it as I love the jet black however I believe I can be careful and those scratches would not have come if it weren't for that guy.

Honestly, how old are you? You did cause it because the item belongs to you and you are responsible for it. End of.

Anyone remember the chrome back on the old iPods? I kept mine in my pocket alone 99% of the time and it looks like I used it for hockey.

I haven't scratched my jet black at all yet and I've been using my shirt to wipe it off. Oddly enough I put it in an otterbox statement and managed to scratch the plastic on the back of the otterbox. Micro scratches all over the plastic now.

Wow that's crazy. Yeah I'm glad I didn't get jet black. I would scratch it doing something like that too.

How did I cause it? Guy asked me if I can show him my phone.... I handed it, he looked at the back and then he rubbed it for 3-5 seconds as I quickly grabbed it back from him:

How on earth are people taking this thread seriously? Try taking your phone to apple when you've broken the screen and tell them your mate did it and see how much they care. Its your phone and you are responsible for it. Doesn't matter if the pope damaged it, its your phone and your responsibility.

Some ******* without my permission decided to rub/clean my phones back with his shirt to see the shinyness.

Now when I get home it has scratches on the back but the thing is that it's possible my phone would have gotten those scratches long term wise anyways.

Would apple consider my request or should I just consider it an accelerated process of my jet black being scratched over time?

If Apple would replace it, they just replace the back cover for you at the Apple Store while you wait!

So did Apple cause it?

You bought a colour that was, on Apple's site, described as easily scratched. You then relinquished it to someone who decided to run it. Responsibility is on you and your friend. Not Apple's.

Life lesson. Either get a case or don't hand your phone to people.

Amen! Everytime I see threads like this one, I feel like saying, I told you so!
I find these responses equally irritating. Id say the grand majority knew that jet black was prone to scratches and don't care. IMO even scratched up its by far the best looking color

It's not a ****ing genie's lamp, why was he rubbing it like that?

What did you say to the guy?

If your going to worry about scratches on a phone why buy the dark colours which are going to show marks far more easily than Silver, Rose Gold or Gold? Phones are designed to be a tool not a priceless antique.

Coz maybe he likes black front face... o_O

I don't have a problem with people getting the jet black color, I think it's a beautiful iPhone. The thing is this has been discussed so many times, even before the phone was released, EVEN Apple let people know on their website that this phone was prone to scratch. So if Someone buys a jet black iPhone knowing all this and their ok with it getting all scratched up, why start a pointless thread like this? Obviously Apple won't place it.

The question is, was he aware of the jet black easily obtaining "micro abrasions" and he was being a jerk. Or he had no idea and was just trying to wipe off some fingerprints to see the nice finish.

You handed the phone to the guy....that's how you caused it.

Why would you let a stranger hold your phone?

They won't replace it. Unless the phone is damage and you have AppleCare plus. If the phone is damage they won't replace it just for scratches on the back. That's just normal wear and tear to them.

Agreed. The Apple website warns that the jet black is subject to scratching.

The second I read Apple's disclaimer about how the finish would scratch, I knew there'd be threads like this, LOL.

I called Apple and told them I wanted to return my iPhone and they said to bring it in so that they can have a look. Last time I went to an Apple Store the lighting was such that the jet black on display did not show scratches unless you really really looked. Hoping it's the same case for me.

However I just saw even more scratches today meaning that given my lifestyle it will get scratches anyways so I may as well just stop carefully looking at my phone for scratches and just enjoy the beautiful feel of my phone

The thing that's bothering me is that when I run my nails lightly on the scratches the scratches that I strongly suspect he created(given where he used his shirt) can be felt by my finger nails however the other scratches caused by me not using protection cannot be felt.

I just hope the awesome Apple CS when it comes to return exchanges or returns doesn't get affected from people like the OP. Man grow up. It's not Apple's fault that your phone was scratched. I hope they reject your request. Karma will come back around just remember that.

If you're going to sue your friend then may I suggest the offices of Bob Loblaw. They're the best in the business.

Lesson learnt! Don't give your phone to anyone..... I don't even let my wife touch my new 7+ jet black. I've seen how she handles her iPhone!!
