This likely means that Apple will lower the price of its 6.1 inch phone to $699 ($729) to take the mini’s spot with the 6.7 inch priced at the current 6.1 inch price. The A15 in the 14 will likely be enhanced in someway to give a 10% performance boost and feature one more gpu core as in the the 13 Pro. This price change alone will drive crazy sales while maintaining margins. The 13 mini will to $599 which still provides an A15 phone at an even lower price.

while I have done the same, unless you want to swap SIMs, 2 phones active at the same time would require 2 service contracts ... plus, your friends/family will now have 2 phone #s to remember ;)
Forward the number of the one you're not carrying to the one you are is what I do, and I use an Android app to forward the txt's when I'm carrying my iPhone. I wish there was an app for iOS that did the same thing. Or just carry both if I know I need both.

The 14 will be the same as the 13 of this year basically. Even old 13 pro will be better than the next 14.
The 14 is a joke “smaller notch”?, more pixels camera?, 1mm thinner bezels?. The competitors have much better specs since years ago!.
How about a one hand form factor for the Max size?. As it is is impossible to operate with one hand, if you grab most Androids, the form factor is much more friendly to the hand AND the screens are much larger, in square inches, than in a Max.
Is this the best a trillion dollar company can do every year????.
No wonder the government blocked you know who Chine company. Now there is no competition nor incentive for Apple to improve hardware, software or even prices. But I will buy the “new” anyway because of my 12 month upgrade plan.

I have felt that way. Seems all the rumors for the 14 that came out right before the 13 are being saved for the 15. Probably blame COVID. I want that periscopic camera and USB-C. The satellite communications feature would also be nice. I could finally ditch my Garmin. If none of those 3 are there I will wait for the 15.

Phone tech is starting to plateau and it's time to stop expecting amazing upgrades every single year. Now it's mostly just a "better" camera. The camera is already good enough for most people, so it isn't much of an enticing reason anymore. The average user probably couldn't care less whether it's lightning or USB-C, or if it's a notch vs pill either.

I used to upgrade every two years (from the 4 up to the XS), when there were much more noticeable improvements (bigger screens, Touch ID, Face ID, wireless charging). I held onto my XS for three years and will probably be doing the same with my 13. Many friends and family have started holding onto theirs longer as well. I'm curious if this trend is why some carriers adopted a 36-month installment plan...people aren't upgrading as often anymore.

Apple knows this too, and is why they are branching out more into services and the rumored hardware subscription service.

Absolutely yes. I think we hit peak innovation by the 12…5g was thrown in. It will be several years before 6g is a thing and something disruptive comes to the smartphone industry.

Some can argue the cameras are still getting better and we will get usbc soon, but for most casual photo takers, they won’t be taking the photo later and putting it in photoshop for post processing nor would they care much about usbc .

Not having an iPhone 14 mini pro option is the only disappointment for me. I’ll never get the giant phones and the regular pro is larger than I’d like. I guess I’ll keep my 13 mini (which I wish was a 13 mini pro) a lot longer.

All of the regular iPhone line is too big for one-handed use. Hence all their swiping features to compensate for the ridiculously oversized screens.

I also wisht the mini was a mini pro. Could have easily been done. Oh well.

We'll see. The reason to upgrade each year sure is getting less and less though.

I've been using an iPhone since the iPhone 4 days. Last year, when the 13 came out, was the first year I didn't do an annual upgrade. Wasn't any point since the 13 Pro was essentially no better than the 12 Pro I already had.

I’m debating now to replace my 8-plus with the 13 or wait it out … more of a need now than want after cracking the screen and the battery life is waning.

Perhaps, but I suspect battery life would be pretty abysmal with the higher-performance chipset and especially with the brighter 120hz display. Maybe once mainstream battery tech markedly evolves.
Two solutions:
1. Less popular: use the same hardware in the pro max as can work with the pro mini.
2. More popular: It would be fine since the mini currently gets 40+ hours of moderate use and 25+ of intense user.

Paired with an Apple Watch, the iPhone mini easily gets multiple days between charges. Battery life isn't an issue for most mini users.

That’s really optimistic.

It’s more likely 6.1–inch $829 stays and the 6.7-inch is sold for $929.

iPhone 14 Pro with its fancy cameras, new form factor, and A16 will start at $1,099.

What was the last phone, not just iPhone, that really was an amazing device? What was the last phone that really made you think “Wow, that’s really something”? For me, it’s been a while. Cell phones are commodified at this point in their history. Any phone costing about the same as an iPhone or iPhone Pro will be a pretty great phone experience. I’m not sure there is anything that Apple or any other manufacturer can introduce that will considered be a game changer. Today a phone is a phone is a phone. All that matters is what ecosystem you prefer and what your needs are. You’ll generally wind up with a pretty great device whatever you choose.

when was the last time an iphone release wasn't a disappointment?
It’s such a stupid idea that each annual phone release should be amazing. After the first few years, phones became mature products and each year there are only a few new features that can be added along some refinements. If you are someone who upgrades each year, the differences will always be minor. The only way that differences are significant is if you are someone who waits 3-4 years to upgrade and then the sum of the interim changes can be exciting again.

If the 14 series represents a transition to a model where the Pro version gets a new A chip and the non-Pro version stays on the current A, then one might consider the 14 non-Pro line to be "disappointing" as it won't be a raw compute jump like going from iPhone 12 to 13. But I would still expect iPhone 14 to be "better" than the iPhone 13 with updates to other components.

Next year, the iPhone 15 non-Pro line will take on a processor jump from iPhone 14 like previous years though it would continue to stay one step behind the Pro line. It would probably get the pill display, too, like it or not. I personally don't like this product model but such a transition will usually generate a "disappointing" product, relatively speaking, for one generation.

Yes—I won’t be upgrading until there is another mini(-sized) model that isn’t also an SE. So maybe never :p
Agreed. My 13 Mini has about the same size screen as my old 6+. For me, there is nothing mini about the screen. Anything bigger than the Mini feels like something I have to think about carrying. The Mini disappears in my pocket and has all the functionality that I need when I need it.
