"While there will reportedly be no "‌iPhone 14‌ mini," the ‌iPhone 14‌ Max will provide an option for users who want a new ‌iPhone‌ with a larger display, but do not need "Pro" features like a ProMotion display and the telephoto camera"

This is actually good a move and true for most people. More competative with Android devices as well that offer large displays at various price points. I think this would cannibalize pro sales though because most people buying that model don't need all the high end features, just want a big display. To which end this would also support having a more stripped down base model with the pro being really differentiated beyond the camera to drive pro sales to offset a cheaper model with large display.

I personally feel like the Pro models should justify their existence more.

Agreed, almost "troll baiting"

I’ve generally upgraded every year, but skipped the 13 as I use my phone less now that I work from home.

But — beyond the data transfer rates — I’ve never understood this huge fascination with changing to USB-C. I’ve fully embraced wireless charging, so I haven’t plugged my phone in in quite some time.

It's not making any money? I find it really hard to believe that the mini is losing Apple money.
Not being rude, but to you and everyone else that repeatedly says this.... GOOGLE IT.

The mini was a huge flop and failed to sell its initial production run, had production halted, and inventory that is STILL sitting around. There are back end deals with carriers for promotions on the model to get them off shelves.

A lot more goes into profitability than net margin. Marketing expenses, product sitting on a shelves are dollars sitting on shelves, discounts and promotions reduce net margins, etc. Apple never discounts direct from their stores or websites, but they do discount through carriers and third parties. Costco has had massive rebates on the mini... funded by Apple.

No, it won't bleed them dry, but it's not making their coffers larger either. There is also volume purchase rates to factor in. Apples commits to buying X number of displays in that size to lock in a price.... when they have to halt production and don't buy that committed quantity, they pay more.

Countless articles out there citing all these factors.

It's about more than just charging (connectivity ecosystem overall) and ultimately having the cable be something non-proprietary

(also if you want/need a quick charge, wireless isn't as good anyhow)

The main point being -- if there's going to be a wired connection for peripherals and data transfer and charging, it should be USB-C at this point.

mini market as always

Yeah it's a shame but I'm hoping they continue to sell the outgoing mini for a couple of years at least. I want one when I'm done with my 12 Pro and it will be many years before it's too weak to keep up with iOS. I'm not bothered about triple beer cans poking out the back of my 300g phone ?

Do we really need a yearly update? The upgrades are usually incremental and at roughly $1K price tag it doesn't make sense to buy but every 3-5 years. I'm happy with my iphone11 but I imagine that if Apple introduces something extraordinary I'd be interested in an upgrade. Truth be told, I'm more interested in an M2 powered MBP than an iPhone.

I wonder if Apple are going to make us buy an iPhone 15 if we want to use it with the new AR headset. A Thunderbolt port would help, but they'd want it to be wireless so maybe it'll use some new wireless standard that doesn't exist yet.

Satellite messaging would be huge. I hike a bit. I am considering Garmin inReach communicator, but holding off to see what this next iPhone offers (I have my doubts). The pricing has to be right on the satellite service.

I thought I'd read that they opted to go standalone (Ala Quest 2)?

Smart move if they did.
That's a big reason the Q2 is so popular

You only need the Q2 itself and it's not clunky with other device involvement as a requirement.

I certainly get the quick charge complaint, though I must be an outlier there. If I’m at my desk, it’s in a a charger. Living room chair? Same. Car? Same. Bed? Same. And I have Anker’s battery pack with if I’m out and get below 50%. On top of everything else? I think I just use my phone less these days. Weird, I know.

In fact the only lightening cable I generally carry with me is for that Apple phone/watch charger that is both overpriced as hell and extremely convenient.

That's all great! Sounds quite convenient actually..

I think most people would simply say -- it'd be nice to just have USB-C in those places so any of a number of things could plug in as needed.

Wired has some great some uses still -- proprietary Lightning just needs to go.

Just like I never understood the fascination for wireless charging, except in my car. Overall wireless is still wired, that <5mm gap has no benefit, except in a few situations e.g when you have buildin chargers e.g car console. I would say wireless has more drawbacks than benefits, but having both is fine. E.g you can’t hold it in your hands and use while charging, else it’s wired.

It will sell a lot, but not sell well according to Wallstreet and Apples own internal standards because of the rising inflation. Apple has also created a double edge sword here, upgrades to the iPhone 12/13 and many are still hanging onto their 11. That with cost of living going up, the disposable income that would normally be spent on an expenditure like the iPhone 14 is gonna be held back.

People are watching to see if the economy is heading into recession over the next 6 months to a year. The iPhone 15 is gonna be affected, too.

2024 and 2025 is where we are likely to see super cycles of iPhone upgrades along with a big one for the 20th anniversary in 2027.

Personally, I’m holding out until 2023 then upgrade again in 2027. This isn’t all doom and gloom for Apple though. They have a healthy diverse business with services, the resurgence of the Mac. So, they will pull through it as long as they avoid producing too many phones that go unsold similar to the iPhone XR.
