And the impact from 3GS to 4 were obvious ones like the front camera, FaceTime etc

But I can't honestly think of anything groundbreaking or revolutionary that apple can do

Huge screen upgrade (retina), front facing camera, FaceTime, Totally different design, thinner, faster, better back camera, led flash, HDR photos, 1gz compared to 600, 720p video and the battery was bigger. IT was a HUGE upgrade.
also the first iPhone to the the second was a big upgrade too. going from edge to 3g service was the biggest and the design was different. The 3gs to the 4 was the biggest upgrade apple has ever done for the phone in my opinion.

What are the guarantees with the iPhone 5 though?

Highly likely:
1gb of ram
4G-LTE
A5X
Greater battery capacity
iOS 6 (the most significant upgrade right there, forget the hardware, it's all about the OS)
New form factor

Possible:
4"-4.3" screen
12mp camera with refined optics
Liquid steel case

If it were up to you (within reason):
Theme's option in settings with more available for purchase via Appstore
Generally more customization available in iOS 6
Apple to endorse jailbreaking and the jailbreak community with an agreement that Cydia will not promote piracy of any sort.
4.3" screen with 3.5" ease of use.
4-5 day battery life with 0-100% charge from AC power within 40 minutes
128gb model
Camera Optics comparable with Canon's 7D etc etc etc

reading is your friend.

If apple can do what they did going to the 4 from the 3gs the phone will be amazing.

Im 90% sure it won't have the a5x chip it will be a totally different chip as the a5x is way too big to fit in a phone. They need something that doesn't eat up battery life if the phone has lte.

There's no way the iPhone 5 will have the A5X. It'll generate way too much heat and use too much power all for nothing.

Exactly you kind of proved my point

All of the 3GS to 4 upgrades were obvious ones that most smartphones had but the iphone 3gs was lacking like retina, front camera, face time, more megapixels, flash, video and battery were VASTLY better

But I can't think of anything the 4s lacks in the same depth the 3GS did except LTE, so it seems like the upgrade from 4s to 5 will mainly be centered around LTE

I don't think apple can vastly improve the upgrades it did for the 4, or at least at the current time we are in

You just bought an iPhone 4S. So of course your view of the next upgrade in hope that is 'minor'. I mean think about it. No one outside, viewing from a 3-4 feet away, can tell whether you have a iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4S. Even I have an iPhone 4 with Siri built in (jailbroken) and some of my friends think I've upgraded. The exterior is going to be a huge impact on 'phone fashion'.

So if you're asking "stone age" as in tech/spec wise, I can't say, hardly for anyone to say besides the regular upgrade + LTE (better processor, RAM, camera, batteries, and maybe a bigger screen). I'm sure most of the software upgrade will be included in the 4S too as the 5.

As far as 'phone fashion', "stone age" is right: might as well be a comparison between the 4(not 4S) and 5, since its [might be] a huge difference.

Most smartphones did not have the things the 4 had at the time. It was ahead of everything at that time.
The 4s is just as good as other phones right now so apple needs to do something like it did going to the 4 to be back on top because i think the 4s wasn't a good upgrade besides the dual core...

But if u were to bet on it

Would you say the upgrade from 4s to 5 will be as big as the 3GS to 4? And why?

Because I thing the biggest upgrade will be LTE and the rest will be minor one IMO like the 2g to 3G

i don't think 2g-3g was minor that was a big upgrade in just that to a lot of people including me. The first iPhone was way too slow.

i don't think the upgrades were predictable. Nobody knew about FaceTime and what apple was going to do. The design was a huge upgrade from 3g. So if the new design is as good of an upgrade plus lte thats already huge for me(since in live in the us i care about lte).
The other things like cameras can be upgraded but it won't be as drastic. unless they upgrade the front camera which i hope they do.
I personally think it will be a huge upgrade I'm hoping along the same lines of 3gs-4. Apple needs to come up with something big...

Agreed. Expecting some significant changes there. I think we put too high a premium on hardware and perhaps Android/Samsung has made us more conscious of the iPhone's "modest" hardware specifications but what it lacks in high end performance specs it more than makes up for with iOS.

And let's face it the "if it were up to you" upgrades are a highly unlikely for most

Indeed. I really hope iOS 6 will be the OS to "liberate" more.

Androids main advantage over iOS is the ability to customize and plug/play/cut/paste functionality brilliantly integrated across most native apps within the OS as well as 3rd party apps. Surely this is not lost on Apple developers and surely they can appreciate implementing change in iOS 6 is imperative to iOS maintaining its slight advantage over Android.

I don't see implementing a theme's option in the settings menu as all that challenging. Add to that purchasable theme's via Appstore and you have a lucrative alternative to theming via JB. We've seen how effective Winterboard is and we've seen how easy it is to change a theme. We've seen how big theming is amongst Android users, time for Apple to implement.

As for the camera, as good as the 4s's camera is, it's still pretty poor under artificial and/or low light circumstances. Perhaps my expectations are unrealistic but we can dream.

----------

I honestly believe we going to see an iPhone 5 3.5" and an iPhone 5 4.3".

It just makes so much sense, and so little not to.

Apple cannot ignore the success bigger screened phones have had but neither cannot it ignore it's own, unparalleled success with the 3.5" iPhone...

The solution, sell both!!!

Just interested if u could bet on the 5 having as big as a upgrade as 3GS to 4 will you.

I know u said u hope it would but if u were to be realistic what would you say?

did you not think about apps? I don't think apple would release two phones. they might increase the size of the new one and will still sell the 4 and 4s with the 3.5.
If they do increase the size i think it will only be one size and it will be easiest for developers to make the apps for.

I did, but not being much into developing apps I have no idea of the work involved in porting an app between various screen sizes.

Perhaps developers on here could enlighten us to the extent of the challenge of developing for different screen sizes. It would be a pity if that were the only reason Apple were unable to diversify their product range.

Can u please answer my last question

I'm pretty interested

From the link he posted...

When coding for iOS, developers deal with a very limited number of screen resolutions and hardware profiles. But when coding for Android, developers have to resolve a virtually limitless set of device parameters.

“Android devices come in different shapes and sizes, different screen resolutions, different device speeds — and that’s actually a huge hurdle,” Karma app co-founder Lee Linden told Wired. “You need to be testing out something like 20 different phones with different resolutions and different processors, and that definitely makes development slower.”

So apple may come out with a larger screen. But they won't be keeping the smaller one if they do this besides selling the old 4 and 4s.
So i don't think apple will be coming out with a 4.3" screen because its on the larger size. 4" seems reasonable jump and not huge. Most people won't complain about a 4" screen i don't think. 4.3" there might be some complainers and apple doesn't want that.

The design change and lte is already big for me. i don't know what else it will really have I'm hoping for a bigger screen even though its not necessary.
If the upgrade isn't that big apple will lose out to android and windows phones over the next year trying to catch up. So they will have to make it pretty amazing for people to stay.

Will have to give this serious thought.

Difficult to attach a percentage or measure how big an upgrade 3GS to 4 was.

Impossible question to answer without some careful examination.

Good luck x-evil-x :p

EDIT: Oh, I see he has already, good job...

A big update for you seems to be the LTE and new design but for people like me that live in Australia and LTE is not a big deal, Besides new design would u bet the 5 will have any over the top features that will VASTLY separate it from the 4s. like how 4 had front camera, the flashlight and retina and 3GS did not?

Aka something SO groundbreaking that people that bought the 4s will be kicking themselves for not waiting lol

I thought the 4 to 4s was quite an underwhelming upgrade until I got the 4s. That A5 is a beast. The overall user experience is all the more richer for it. Really, it's a vast and highly tangible improvement on the A4!!!..

Ground breaking would include 3D screens, inductive charging and a 4.3" screen as easy to interface with as the 3.5" one is...

----------

So I guess we not getting ground breaking..
