I'm with you. If only Lenovo could make that W510 look a little less ugly I would consider getting one.

The fact of the matter is... we shouldn't even be looking at a computer like that and wishing MBPs were up to that standard. Apple should be setting that standard!

Heh, by the way, we both have the exact same MBP
Getting rather full, this puny 160GB-HD, isn't it? :D

There are many chips in a logic board. It's a normal solution.

not at all. A third party chipset means different drivers and POTENTIALLY more problems and less performance.
If it has to be USB3.0, I'm looking for an integrated Intel solution.

Cool! Best computer I've ever owned. My wife calls it my girlfriend. Ha!

Yeah, mine is almost full. Only 16 GB available. Guess I should clean it up and get rid of stuff I don't need... or get a bigger HD to install.

How is it that you are a "macrumors newbie" yet you've been a member since 2002? Don't post much?

Tell me about it. I've only had 200-900 MB (!) of free space since about a year. Yeah, I know that's pretty bad for performance/reliability, but I'm just too lazy/poor to upgrade the HD. I'd rather get a new Quad-core MBP with Blu-Ray and dual SSDs, and USB 3.0 of course ;)

And yeah, I mostly lurk. I registered back when I got my first Mac (1 Ghz G4 TiBook) and I basically only visit the forums when I have a bone to pick with Apple, when I'm looking for a new machine or when I'm just in the mood for some tech discussions :D

Wow, only 200 Mb of free space is going to cause a performance hit on you MBP.
You shouldn't stay below 10 Gb in my opinion

I know, and it does. But my 120GB of music limit my flexibility ;)
And I'm certainly not going to buy a new HD for a 2.5 year old computer.

If not, then your new MBP will be outdated, since there are already external drives and such coming out with the spec.

As I said before, the upcoming Sony Vaio Z (definitely an high-end computer, in the same range of the MBP) doesn't have any USB3.0, and it's hardly "outdated".
Btw it is VERY DIFFICULT right now to find any external storage using USB3.0
The situation it's probably going to change in the next 6-10 months, and if this is the case, we'll see Usb3.0 ports in the next MBP's revision (late 2010-early 2011 I suppose).

How can you still ignore the fact that someone who buys an expensive "professional" machine expects it to remain viable - not cutting-edge, but viable - for longer than "6-10 months"?
And Sony's mistakes do not excuse Apple's mistakes.

Apple makes the OSX drivers for their hardware.

Which is why I'll probably wait until Fall 2011 to update my MBP, when USB 3 is more standardized. If Apple still doesn't have it by then, then that's their fault because I'll go elsewhere.

Apple does change the game. IF THEY JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON of USB 3.0 . STOP! STOP! STOP! There isn't a bandwagon yet!!!! So stop complaining if USB 2.0 isn't good enough or fast enough because it doesn't transfer data at the speed of Kenyan's running the New York Marathon then WAIT! And honestly how will USB 3.0 help you. Is it going to make you more money, or is it just going to speed up your music movie collection. Everyone talks about PRO well PRO is a nice abbreviation for PROFESSIONAL which is associated with a JOB and MONEY! So unless you're a Photographer or shoot a lot of HD Video and need to transfer to your DROBO then why do you care??? If you NEED then buy it. Just like people comparing the C2D to the i# chips. If you are happy now and can run off the current MBP then buy it now. Everyone know's Apple arrives late to the party, but they've let everyone else develop a technology that I doubt Steve Jobs really cares about. Mmmm so they save their time and money by allowing other companies to fully develop a product and implement it when they see a need!!! That is really bad business!!!! WOW! Sometimes I think people forget that Apple is really Apple Inc. and is a business. Oh yeah bluray is highly doubtful, but a possibility in the next refresh!

:apple: Oh yeah long live SJ :apple:

Whether a certain feature is currently necessary is only of secondary concern. It's really a question of the usability of the computer over the length of its life. If you are considering what you will want or need from your computer in three or four years, then the adoption of these pending features becomes an important point.

If you only expect to use your new computer for a year or two, then it's no big deal, sure.

This is true, but this is something that should be expected if you're purchasing technology , i.e a MBP, in a "transition" period. No doubt I would love to have USB 3.0 but it is highly unlikely it's going be in the early 2010 refresh.

Yes!

The new Macbook Pro's will definitely be shipping with USB 3.0 on them.
Many devices already use usb 3.0. Mostly cameras and a few external hard drives. and many higher end pc's are also shipping with usb 3.0.
Heck, it would be just in time for the Iphone 4g, which will have USB 3.0 capabilities.

Sorting through/transferring hundreds of HD movie and musc files with USB 2.0 or even FW800 will make you go insane.

Did you really try FW800 ? In the "real life" it's almost twice USB2.0's speed
that is the reason I'm hoping for something better: USB is crap, and USB3.0 is only a "faster crap" ;)

Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying that USB is crap. But yes, FW800 is without any doubt superior. Too bad we don't get 2 ports for the device that can't be chained.

Me too! :D Still got about 40GB left, but I make sure I don't get any less than that.

Back on topic, I think the new MBP's will have USB3, especially since apple removed FW400, I think they'll want to be back on top.

Bull.

Back in the day when RAM was crucially limited, what you said was true. OS swapped like crazy, and the hard drive file system had a hard time figuring out proper blocks if there was less than 10% free space.

Now... you load your app and data, then it stays in the RAM while you work. Not an issue.

(and FWIW, UNIX systems don't get confused even if you totally run out of hard disk space, which may happen if some app writes to /tmp a lot. It just keeps going, unlike some other systems which are totally useless with little free storage space)

It is insane to use USB connections with external hard drives. It's like going back to dialup once you've tasted broadband. FireWire 800 surely isn't perfect, and as drives get faster it is becoming to seem outdated. But its real-world performance is on a totally different level than USB2 and I surely would not be suprised if it spanked USB3 too.

eSATA is clunky, so we'll just have to wait for faster FW :)

A lot of computers have a combo eSATA/USB port, and there are cables out there that will take power from the USB port and data from the eSATA port for a single connection, although it can be hard to find enclosures that support it.

eSATA is also good because very little electronics are required in the enclosure, which makes them relatively inexpensive.
