Initially I was like, heck yeah! Apple is offering $380 for the trade in of the AWU1. But then I started thinking about it. My health is 100%, what really is there that is different? CPU, tap thing, brighter display, storage (using 14.1 of 32GB now). And after all was said and done it was going to be $500 out the door after trade in.

Yeah... I'll wait. I'll probably pick up one of those new alpine bands.
So if you were to getting the Ultra 2 with that new band, you could subtract that $99 from the purchase price as you get to keep the band and the charging puck when you trade in your AW…
The orange ocean band was an instant buy for me when I saw it, then I learned about the $380 trade in, so I pulled the trigger on AWU2…
Just some food for thought

How interesting. I like how you think! We'll see how I hold out. I told myself I'd keep my 14PM too. And here I'm pre-approved for the 15PM on Friday. <cough>.

Only thing I can think is... I'm really happy with my AWU1 and it's still 100% health. We'll see how my resolve holds out. Still 2 more days. :D

I don’t look at battery health much, a month or 2 ago it was 100%, today it showed 99%, not that it really matters as I have AC+.
I was thinking upgrading my 13PM but decided against it, the only reason would have been the camera and I don’t find that convincing, and Apple trade-in is $580 and the 512 version is 1399 (same as my 13PM), so decided against it. That made the decision for the Ultra 2 easier for me…

Where in Europe are you? In Germany the new Ultra is actually cheaper (899 vs. 999).
Norway. Our currency has weakened against dollar/euro over the course of the year. The new pricing on all models from Apple have increased quite a bit.

Ultra 1 was 9990 - new one is 10990
15 Pro Max 17990. A regular months salary here after taxes is just over 30 000 for reference.

Hm I didn’t plan to upgrade. But with the trade in (+ I want the new ocean band) and the fact that my Ultra already has some visible scratches, I might be tempted.
But since nothing was changed to the design, the new one will scratch sooner or later as well. ;)
Battery is at 96% btw

Ultra 1, just upgraded to the RC and got the only feature I wanted in the apple watch for the past 10 years - a digital watchface with the time in the middle surrounded by complications. So no - I'll wait till the battery on this one dies, and Apple decides to actually add new features to the watch lineup...

Brightness increase is nice, but I have no issues reading my 2000 nits brightness in the direct sun. It's nice that they finally upgraded the S9 chip, but there is literally no software upgrade to accompany the extra power, and the battery improvements are minimal at best.

Mainline Apple Watch upgrades have gone downhill since S4/S5 - S4 had EKG, S5 got always on. Then we get the useless blood oxygen sensor in S6, S7 gets a slightly larger screen, S8 gets a temp sensor, and S9 gets a new chip, but with no actual use case improvements.

If you have an S5+ with decent battery health, I think you hold on for one more year.

It's just fiddling around the edges now I think until some groundbreaking tech comes along ie. new battery chemistry, micro LED, new light sensors for health. Until this kind of thing occurs it is just fluff. Same with the iPhone now, it is just mainly a better camera each year.

I think Apple are realising that the market is now quite mature and they dont need groundbreaking features every year. There are enough people on an AW 4,5,6 or 7 that a new Ultra 2 may be worth it. For those on an Ultra 1 not so much.

Think about it if you spent £849 last year would you really want it to be technically out of date a year later? The days of annual upgrade are over both in the smart phone market and smart watch market.

I was a bit disappointed yesterday with the AW and iPhone, then I realised that it isn't a bad thing that my iPPro14 and AWU1 are still current.

The proof in the pudding to me is that i went on the Apple UK site today and I can still get a launch day AWU2 if I want.

The ultra 2 might finally be the watch i am looking for. I currently have a watch 6. I am now primarily a mountain biker. In order to track my rides I use a garmin 530 bike computer, a wheel speed sensor and strava. I like to track heart rate as well but the two chest monitors I have tried haven’t lasted longer than 6 months.
the big miss on all Apple Watches so far and a miss that really disappointed me with the ultra 1 was no ability to use 3rd party sensors. Now that the ultra 2 can connect to Bluetooth wheel sensors I should be able to finally ditch the garmin and use an ultra 2, connected it via Bluetooth to speed sensor and use strava. This will get me accurate distance and ability to track heart rate without a chest monitor. Finally might have the perfect watch for mtb.
also when is apple going to come up with a real app for tracking exercise? While the watch can record a run or a ride there is really no place to set up goals, track and view past activity etc. really sucks and can’t believe they have not addressed this yet.
I’ve used the app ismoothrun since the Pebble days… it lets you connect sensors, syncs with Health and does all the heart rate zone stuff etc - it also lets you track the mileage of your running shoes and bikes, as well as exporting sessions to strava and other platforms. Think the developer is just one guy (who’s a triathlete) and the development‘s less proactive than it was, but still does the job.

My launch day Ultra’s battery capacity is already 95% 😔
Will u upgrade to the Ultra2? Mine is at 96 and I bumped my watch during training with a kettle bell. Since it is cosmetic, Apple Care won’t help. It still bothers me enough, that I think about upgrading;) maybe I will get used to it with time..

The annual upgrade days have been over for a decade. It was never a thing with the watch.

I have a 6, and while the battery is getting weak and it's scratched to hell and back, I'm going to hold off for another year. It still lasts through the day plus a 10+ mile run, as long as I'm not using BT to listen to music.

Probably not. I don’t expect Apple to drastically change the design of the Ultra after only one year.
Haven't changed my mind after replying to this thread last July.

The ONLY thing that could have made me get the Series 2 would have been some cool new titanium colors, especially a dark one. And even then, that would have been a dumb expense :)

Past tense for me, already ordered the Ultra 2. My brother has a birthday so he will get my Ultra 1 and I will enjoy the Ultra 2. The double tap, better heart rate monitor and on device Siri sealed it for me.
