Brighter display, faster CPU, new U chip, on-device Siri, double-tap gesture, more storage (64 GB vs. 32 GB)

If you have last years model, these are not for you anyway. Keeping your old Watch is the most sustainable thing you can do. For folks with an older Watch, say S3 or S4, this is a massive upgrade.
It's not that big. I didn't need a brighter display I run my current display down at minimum brightness and its more than bright enough and switch off the always on. I want long battery life. On device is not a selling point for me. The double tap gesture is worthless to me. If you have an s3 or an s4 I'd have thought the s9 is the natural upgrade path and the battery life isn't a huge improvement though i suspect the speed and screen will be. Sensors/sensor accuracy probably will be and the sleep tracking will. At least the prices are slightly down. Once again though this isn't huge innovation.

Leaning no.
Especially after Apple is offering me only 370$ for my Ultra 1 in Canada when it costs 1099 as compared to the US where it costs like 799$, and you can trade in your Ultra 1 for 380$.

I'm keeping it maybe next year I'll jump or for Ultra 4.

trading in my ultra 1 for $380. I'd be buying the orange ocean band for $100 anyway so only $400 net out of pocket for the upgrade (when you factor in that i would have spent the $100 for the band)

Well now I see the modular ultra face is available on the first-gen Ultra then definitely not. Hold out for the rumoured redesign next year.

The Ultra will (very probably) not be re-designed next year, the regular Series Watch will be.

Just ordered (with blue alpine band and AppleCare) - after taxes it was $1300CAD ouch. Replaces a cellular S3 I got in Sept 2017. I expect to keep this one for a similarly long time so I'm hoping the upgraded chip and expanded storage will keep it off Apple's retired list an extra year or two.

I've been upgrading every year since the first Apple Watch, so as an Ultra 1 owner I've already pre-ordered the Ultra 2 :)

Currently using both Ultra 1 and Series 6 SS.

On one hand, the Ultra 2 is a bit disappointing since it has no new color (I would like to have a more silver-ish color to match my silver watchbands, maybe like the iPhone 15 Pro white one). Also, the design are the same (the bezel, color, and the case). I do like the new features but it's not a huge update.

On the other hand, I feel like I haven't used the most out of my Ultra 1 (I got it from launch day last year) since I haven't gotten a chance to use many of the sports features. The Ultra 2 is here, and I somehow felt like I shouldn't buy the Ultra 1 last year (back then, I didn't expect that it would be an annual update for Ultra). But who knows whether I will be too busy for sports this year? I enjoyed my Ultra 1. I liked its battery life and screen size. I kept the shiny S6SS (silver) just because it may matches my suits better, but the Ultra shouldn't be that bad if I can find great metal cases (the Ultra is not a perfect fit with the Milanese loop, imo).

I’m keeping my Ultra 1 at least another year. It’s going to take some new health monitoring capability to get me to update.

Curious do you change the band and watch color/ material every year?

Started with the Stainless Steel in 2015 and stuck with that material every year until the Ultra, changed to the black one once that became available because plain stainless steel was a horrible scratch magnet, needed constant polishing. Did change bands when I bought them but the case material I always kept the same. Just a shame they never did a black ultra this year, annoying when they did a black titanium iPhone.

I actually sold my Ultra thinking they'd come out with a Space Black one, didn't buy an Ultra 2, but bought the Hermes Kilim in Orange because I really liked it. I will now have a band but am watchless.

The ultra 2 might finally be the watch i am looking for. I currently have a watch 6. I am now primarily a mountain biker. In order to track my rides I use a garmin 530 bike computer, a wheel speed sensor and strava. I like to track heart rate as well but the two chest monitors I have tried haven’t lasted longer than 6 months.
the big miss on all Apple Watches so far and a miss that really disappointed me with the ultra 1 was no ability to use 3rd party sensors. Now that the ultra 2 can connect to Bluetooth wheel sensors I should be able to finally ditch the garmin and use an ultra 2, connected it via Bluetooth to speed sensor and use strava. This will get me accurate distance and ability to track heart rate without a chest monitor. Finally might have the perfect watch for mtb.
also when is apple going to come up with a real app for tracking exercise? While the watch can record a run or a ride there is really no place to set up goals, track and view past activity etc. really sucks and can’t believe they have not addressed this yet.

I really want to order the new AWU because I’m tempted by new things. I’m a sucker.

I do really like the new watch face—I’d prob use it as my main. And the tap function is interesting.

But I’m a year in to my AWU and my battery capacity is STILL 100% and I have no complaints. It’s never been too dim to see. All the upgrades are nice but not enough to shell out ~$500 after trading in.

New one is better but the first edition still holds up very, very well. So maybe next year.

I was considering the Ultra 2, but none of my issue with the Ultra 1 were changed. The Ultra 2 still is thick, heavy, and has large bezels. I was hoping for a black colored case option this year. And the improvements this year are in areas that I personally thought were ok on the Ultra 1 (Screen Brightness, Chip Speed, U1). I guess this iteration of the Ultra is just not for me.

I'll stick with the S Series watches until the Ultra goes on a diet (gets thinner and lighter). I am glad that the Ultra 2 is making some folks smile though. :)

I think there are some good upgrades in Ultra 2, but I may end up buying an Ultra 1 if I can find a decent sale. Still a great watch.

Only hope is that battery life did increase but they didn't want to update that 36/72 hours text for whatever reason. Maybe that is plausible because of the new CPU?
