I hadn't seen that article, thanks for sharing. It backs up my personal experiences too with what many of the people I know have been saying.
It also matches my experiences. I don't know anyone who upgrades every year and I've still got an iPhone 6 myself, though I am looking to upgrade it soon.

I doubt many people here will believe it though.
I think there are a lot of relatively wealthy members on here, especially in the USA. Quite a few of them even seem to be happy the entry level price for the new flagship iPhone is going to see a substantial increase.

I don't know anybody who upgrades every year either. It's an expensive hobby if you do that and even the Apple upgrade program in the UK is a bit of a rip off. A lot of people i know including myself upgraded to the 6S last year. The article you shared shows that was perhaps quite a popular choice. Price is the major factor as I've been saying for quite a while and Apple are going to have another shock in their largest European market if their price rumours are to be believed.

If the head of Carphone Warehouse is suggesting people are keeping phones longer and buying older devices, it's more than likely true. They are after all arguably the biggest supplier in the uk. :)

I paid $900 for my iPhone 6s Plus 128Gb a couple years ago, and they were selling like hotcakes.

A significant amount of people WILL pay over $1000 for the iPhone 8(?) - it will be in high demand and hard to get.

Especially since 0% interest monthly payments are now common. No-brainer.

Myself? I'm on a 3-year upgrade cycle this time around. Will hang on to my 6S+ until next years' 8s. My battery is still going strong, I've got tons of great features and ARKit will be coming to my phone. Plus, I like being on the "S" cycles. Let others break in the new, big hardware changes first.

I upgrade every year as I have a Sim only contract. Financially it's better for me to do it that way.

How much are people willing to pay for iOS itself? Say if the LG G6 is $350 US and the iPhone 8 is $1000 USD? Is iOS worth some amount you would subjectively put? I wouldn't say it's worth $650 extra because that money can be used towards mortgages/student loans, auto payments, monthly bills, savings, investments, or a rainy day fund.

At this point, the G6 is mature enough to give reliable performance, offer today's modern smartphone features, and has a two year warranty to give customers room to breathe after the boot loop extravaganza. It's not iOS nor Apple, but it is good damn cost alternative to me. I really want the iPhone 8 though and really hope I can just trade my iPhone SE towards it and pay like $400 over 24 months after all promos and subsidies.

Yes. I am on the 6S right now, and the 8 is totally new, so I am in! I can sell my 6S for about $300 or so to help fund it :)

This has always been the case with the general public. It's just that a lot of people were still using dumb/feature phones so there was plenty of room for growth. Now, I think smartphones have already mostly reached saturation and there really isn't much reason to upgrade unless your device breaks.

Pretty much why PC sales have been slowing down, too. Everyone already has one and what they have is working just fine.

If the entry iPhone 8 is £1000 in the UK I will just buy a Samsung S8 which can be had for around half this price.

Performance-wise, the $200 Moto G would've been fine for my family.

iOS is exactly the reason we're paying $400+ for iPhones. Now that we're off 2-year contracts though, we keep our phones for as long as possible (unless the carrier offers a deal too good to pass up like last year's trade in promo).

BTW, when I wrote this thread I really didn't understand the full price amount it sounds like they are going for. I might be on my iPhone for a long time. I'm staring at 1500 for a new phone..... I just don't know if I can....

Now exploring if I can disable iOS 11 from being on my phone (don't want to experience the OS slow down that you get).

Jup, I think if Apple truly goes for the +1000 for the iPhone 8, then a lot of people will go for )or at least really consider) the S8, which you can get for about €550 atm.
Except the true loyal Apple customers of course, they do not care if the new iPhone will be around 1100-1200 USD. They will come up with something to justify the price ;)

(my max. I will spend on the iPhone 8 will be €1000 and otherwise I keep my Samsung S8 which I bought for €450 brand new via via)

Can I ask how much it costs you? I've looked into buying outright in the past and it's always worked out more expensive, especially when 50% of the phones value is lost in the first 12 months.

If I was to buy outright I'd do it on swappa, buying a sealed phone on there works out pretty well. I save on tax and if you don't mind waiting a few weeks(after launch) a $750 iPhone will sell for $700(no tax) or even a little less.

That's America though isn't it? Your pricing structure is totally different to ours. What you pay in dollars we pay in pounds which works out about $900 equivalent. Add to that the Brexit tax Apple have decided to put on the iPhone (not iPads) and it's bloody expensive. My current contract works out at £1050 over 24 months. At the time I took my contract out I think if I had bought the handset and a sim only contract, I'd have saved about 20 quid. I was better off spreading the cost.

I dread to think how much an iPhone 8 will be with all options included.

we all forget the $$$ you ''need'' for the extras;

- wireless charger, believe me...Apple will charge at least $79/99 for this charger
- Apple leather case for example $ 49
- a spare cable $25
- AppleCare+ $99

Add this to the rumoured $1000-$1100 iPhone 8...you do the math! ;)

(and yes, I know you either no really need any of the above or get it cheap somewhere else, except AppleCare+ and I think the wireless charger will be an ''Only sold by Apple'' thingy)

Which is why I plan on buying the iPhone 8 directly from Apple and put my usual Giff Gaff SIM card into it.

How much does that work out as if the phone is expected to be around £1000?

I'll pay the £1000 for the phone and then put the Giff gaff SIM card in which has a tarrif of £5 - £10 a month (they are the 2 I choose from) but if you don't top up after the goody bag ends at the end of the month you still get free Giff Gaff to Giff Gaff texts and calls for 3 months.

I've always bought my iPhones in cash then just used my O2 payg sim in it. Then, when the next version is released I sell my current one and then buy the new one (or buy the new one then sell the old one if I can't be bothered to wait lol). However, last year I decided to try out the Apple upgrade program as it more or less copies what I was doing anyway...but I just hand the phone back to Apple instead of going through the hassle of selling it. Ok, it's a twenty month contract but I've got the option to upgrade after eleven payments (which I believe takes me nicely to the launch of the 8!). Being able to spread the cost of the AppleCare+ over the twenty payments helps too. If I can do this for a new 8 this year then I think they can count me in :)

It does work out cheaper for me because my sim only contract is £144 a year which is cheaoer than a £40 a month contract for two years.
I get £500 back on my existing phone.

Fair enough. It's still slightly more than I pay over 24 months, but clearly works for you. I've got no interest in upgrading every 12 months though. I think I'd get bored of smartphones very quickly if I had to choose one every year lol.
