I wouldn't sell my iPad 3 for a mini, but I'd love to have one. I've got several different tablets (sorta of have an impulse buying problem). I do hope the next iPad doesn't go 16:9. I had an acer A500 and the longer thinner size bothered me. I think the ipad has the better ratio. The 7" tabs serve a great purpose. I love my little samsung tab 2.

Forget the mini- I might sell mine for the new 7 inch NookHD.
90% of ipad is reading/surfing.
IMO- ipad is overkill for most folks.
I live in NYC- whenever I see someone with an ipad they're reading.

And for those complaining about the mini-ipad screen resolution- the Nook HD is 1440x900.

As an ereader that does much more- The Nook HD looks like a winner.

iPad Mini & iPad (1st Gen)

I have an iPad (1st Gen) and have seen NO need to upgrade so far, however if it has 3G support (or equivalent) I would consider....

The oddest thing about iPads is watching people take photos with it and "rumor has it" that it doesn't have a camera, but with a new IP5 who need another camera....

I liked being able to toss this into a big pack or purse but I think I'd like to be able to toss the mini into a smaller bag or sack!

:)

well considering i just bought an iPad 3 tonight and the iPad Mini is rumored to not be Retina...NO THANKS.

after getting a defective one, my replacement iPad 3 works beautifully. barely gets warm, screen is perfect (no dead pixels, no light bleed, no tint...pure bliss).

i watched tonight's presidential debates...the clarity was something i have never ever seen before in my life. too bad what they were saying was awful

Nope. I am happy with the iPad 3. I have a kindle fire and the 7-inch form factor just isn't doing it for me (and no, OS is not playing a factor in that). The only thing I'd consider replacing my iPad with is one of the new Windows 8 RT tablets (specifically the Surface).

I sold my iPad 3 in anticipation of the iPad mini. I had two iPad 3 and neither one of them was getting much use. I use the nexus 7 much more often to browse the web before bedtime. Its just lighter and more comfortable. The iPad is much heavier in comparison. Its hard to hold for long periods of time. I just hope the iPad mini will not underwhealm.

I do agree that 90% of my iPad usage is reading, but that doesn't mean the other 10% isn't important. The new Kindle Paperwhite, for instance, looks perfect for reading, but I hear the web browser is lousy. So on my iPad, I can browse the web for articles to read, send them to Instapaper, and read them all in one device. With the Kindle, I'd have to do the browsing on some other device. So for me, iPad wins over any e-ink device. As for 7-inch devices like the NookHD, I'm not sure how I'd feel about browsing on a smaller screen. I've always felt quite satisfied with the current iPad's screen size, so never felt the need for trying the 7-inches. I do hope the next iPad will get lighter, but personally, I'm not giving up screen size for reduced weight.

Oh, and I also live in NYC, and I've seen people playing games on iPads on subways/buses. It's also possible I've done it a few times myself.

Windows Tablet is one thing I would replace mine with too - has to be around the same price though - which will probably never ever happen ..

iPad mini for out & about. iPad 3rd gen for the house and long journeys. I was however tempted by the nexus 7. Not sure yet, gotta wait and see how this mini is.

I don't understand people thinking the rumored iPad Mini would be unsuitable for reading because it is too small.

I've used a 6" Kindle which is even smaller and it is wonderful for reading. Not only is the screen size just fine, but the weight and compactness make it really nice to handle for long periods of time.

Fair enough. My 4 year old use to play games on mine. Lately he seems bored with it.
I'm honestly curious as to what kind of serious work is being done that requires a full 10 inch?

Hell no.

I love my iPad 3... and I think a 7" screen would be way too small for me to do work on (annotating pdfs, drawing, reading/studying ~500-1000 powerpoint slides every week, etc).

I tried the Nexus 7. It was nice but the screen was just too small. I'll try the mini though.

Who knows, maybe it will be ok even though the Nexus 7 was not.

Ain't holdin me breath though.

just sold my ipad 3 actually. too big. I'm using a kindle fire HD right now and I love the small size. Since the ipad 3 is rumored to be just a little bit bigger than the kindle fire 7 inch it will be the perfect size for me. Can't wait!

Would definitely consider it if the mini was retina. The N7 is so much more comfortable to hold, it's probably worth losing out on web surfing.

I'm on the verge of selling my 3rd gen for a Nexus 7 actually. Getting more and more fed up with iPad and iOS. Hate that everything has to be done through iTunes... Wish it was as simple as drag and drop. Nexus grants that wish...

Going to see what the holiday sales bring...

Actually, I'm getting the Toshiba HandyBook instead. So tired of thoughtful UI design.

If you start to actually use the iPad, you're longing for the 13" iPad Pro (whatever that may imply). And a keyboard.

Well, or the MBA.

I use my iPad to review and edit documents and spreadsheet. While that might be doable on a mini, the larger screen allows me to see more of my document at once, which is always an advantage. People working with PDFs will probably want a 10 inch screen. Not a serious use, but comic books and magazines display almost full size on a 10 inch screen. Landscape keyboard on the 10 inch iPad is almost the same size as a full-size keyboard.

Yesterday, I had no work to do, and my iPad did end up staying in my bag all day while I read and texted on my iPhone 5. (The screen on the 5 is a great improvement on the 4/4S, not because of the increased size, but because the color is so much more clearer and the screen really pops at you.) But if I have any work to do, my iPad comes out. And I'm typing this reply now on my iPad, but I wouldn't even attempt this on my iPhone -- I'd just wait until I could get out my iPad or get to a computer. Whether it would be comfortable to type longer posts like this on the mini, I wouldn't know until I give it a try. But IMO, larger screen size does make tablets more useful.

Well, or the MBA.

I have a 13 inch MBA, which I do use when I have a desk to prop it up on. But I find it too big to use on my lap in places where I have no flat surface to put it down. Now the 11 inch? I don't know -- I haven't tried the 11 inch other than the few minutes I play with display models in stores. But the point is, for the type and amount of work I do while on the go, the iPad is enough, and I don't really find myself motivated enough to buy a 11 inch MBA. Other people might indeed find that they'd rather carry a MBA 11 than an iPad. People have different needs, and different devices or combination of devices fit those needs.

I take time to evaluate any tech product I'm considering. If it fits in with my preferences I buy it. As such, when something else new is released, it has no impact on what I already have.

I plan on purchasing two mini's the moment they're released.
