How was your upgrade?

Hi there, I tried to update my bootcamp Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on my 12" Retina Macbook. The download worked fine and when to computer rebooted to continue the installation it just reboots again to Windows 8.1 like nothing happened. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this and update to Windows 10 from an existing Windows 8.1?

running into the same issue here on my 2015 MacBook.. very frustrated..

Did you have the VMware Fusion display driver when you were finished? My attempt in a VMware Windows 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10 seems to be working, but all I have available for a display adapter is the basic Windows adapter which only has 3 fairly low resolution settings. I need the Fusion 3D accelerated graphics display adapter so I have available a 2550 x 1440 resolution again. Attempting to reinstall VMware tools doesn't seem to complete, and changes nothing.

Re-installed the WMWare tools VMWare SVGA 3D by repairing the previous install. All looks good now!

Any Windows in a Workstation VM runs dead slow, why would someone want to do that ? Well, in case you need Windows XP two times a year ;) ...

Actually I found Windows 7 to very well in VMware, I often used that (prior to my SP3) to run windows so I could keep both OS X and windows running at the same time.

Many people tend to play games in Parallels (I use Vmware) and they also seem content with the performance. I don't think its as bad as you think it is.

1. To do some quicky stuff without having to reboot!
2. Installing the WIN10 TP, as a precaution and not having to add a SSD/HHD or partition.
3. Still having access to Windows XP / 7 / 8.1 in VM's

More the lazy & easier user, that's me! :D

I've been running Windows in a VM for quite a while and it runs very fast and smooth. A lot of the performance depends on the power of the host machine since it has to share resources with the VM.

I give Windows 10 in it's VM 6C/12C & 8GB/24GB Memory, works nice and smooth.

A day ago I received my Macbook 1.3ghz and was really dissapointed with the performance of Yosemite to point of returning the unit. I've just installed Windows 10 Enterprise via bootcamp. It is very early days but so far it is chalk and cheese. Windows 10 flys in comparison to Yosemite. Opening browsers, start menu, program just feels snappy. So far comparing the basic usage to my surface pro 3 i5, I do not see any noticable difference..... but again early days

Has anyone had any issue with getting Windows 7 to recognize the upgrade? I have installed all my updates, but it still isn't showing in the task bar where I can upgrade to windows 10. I downloaded the trouble shooter app and it said my version of windows isn't supported, but I know it is, I have a single license windows 7 professional.

I am trying to install with bootcamp but I can't run the bootcamp drivers as it says it isn't windows 7. Anyway to fix?
try do disable Windows version checking of bootcamp.msi ( right-click at bootcamp.msi and follow the dialogue )

I have mid 2012 Rmbp with windows 8.1 running on bootcamp and fusion.

I did the upgrade but had problems with drivers - no wifi and other problems. After trying to update drivers with bootcamp files , etc I finally rolled back.
Then I decided to clean install using bootcamp with downloaded ISO. .
That worked great (trick was to choose custom install option) but now I'm not activated. My win8 key isn't recognized. I'd assume that's because I never got network drivers working, so it was never activated as win10.

Do I need to start over with a win8 install (incl all the updates) to redo the win10 upgrade just to activate? Or will Microsoft activate over the phone?

I do have a win8 system image but I'm not sure how I can restore w bootcamp. That would save me a lot of time vs clean win8 install if anyone knows a way to use that.

Hi m4v3r1ck,

Thanks to your and other's suggestions, hints, reports, etc. on this thread, I do have Windows 10 upgrade running on my cMac Pro 5,1 both as a bootable SSD and as a VMware VM (although not from the same image yet due to the yet unsolved dual activation issue).

In the VM, I finally removed all VM_Tools and reinstalled them. It seemed to mount the virtual CD with the tools, but didn't start the auto execute. So, I just opened the virtual CD and started the installation manually. I find it odd that neither your post above, nor my Display Adapter list the common 2560 x 1440 resolution as a choice, since my monitor supports that as a native resolution.

Thanks again for your posts here...

Congrats howard!

YMW! I always like to share my own trail-and-(user)error adventures here on MR so even when not being succesful all the time.

Of course I do relay on members with soooo much more techie knowledge to chime in. A great place indeed to hang out here on MR!

Again congrats on the eventual succesful update!

Cheers

Sure!

What I really not fully understand why so many applications where deactivated by the Windows 10 upgrade. All my hardware is working properly - checked in Device Manager - so that's not a problem atm.

Glad that my Windows 10 got the activated status now! Must have been the busy server issue I read about.

Still have to troubleshoot all the missing (startup) applications!

Cheers

Well I upgraded my Core 2 Duo machine from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it worked pretty well. Yes the installation did ask me to uninstall one of my card readers (which I did) but once the installation was completed I found that the driver for the card reader had already been installed. With regard to activation, I had no issues there as well. My windows 10 was activated right after the installation ended and am enjoying it now :)

You cannot do a 'clean install' as your initial win10 upgrade or you will not get it activated. You MUST upgrade over your existing 7/8.1 version first, wait for it to activate, then verify it by logging into your microsoft account and see that its listed there.

Sounds like you messed things up, you will need to reload 8.1, update it, then reinstall win10 over that. You can use the downloaded ISO as long as its the correct one. If you had standard 8.1, you need Win10 Home. After install, if some of your hardware doesnt work, you should be able to load the newest bootcamp drivers to fix it. Win10 will accept most win8.1 drivers. When I upgraded my mac pro 5,1 the bluetooth quit, and the video, also keyboard buttons. I reinstalled the bootcamp 5.1 files, then downloaded and installed the current win10 video drivers from nvidia. All went perfectly and mac pro is running great.

Now, AFTER you get it activated, and verified on MS account, then you can reformat the drive and do a clean install if you wish. During the install when you log into your MS account, the win10 will self activate without a serial number being needed.

As for calling MS on the phone to activate it by giving them your old 8.1 key and telling them what happened, I suppose its worth a try. If they do allow it let us know here.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 yesterday. I have Windows on a separate drive in my Mac Pro (please see signature for details). My Windows 8.1 install was a standard Bootcamp installation (as opposed to an EFI installation). I also run this installation in VMware Fusion.

When I clicked on the upgrade option in the task bar, I was initially told that it couldn't be done and cited the VMware video drivers as the culprit. A quick search and I found out that I would have to download the ISO, burn it, and install from there.

Once I go the Windows 10 ISO on to disc, the installation process went without a hitch. I chose to keep all my apps and settings and it did a good job of doing so. I was also careful to turn off all the privacy invasive stuff that Microsoft has on as default. After the installation was done, I was left without any Nvidia drivers for my video card so my system was running something like 1024p resolution. I downloaded the latest from Nvidia, installed, and got back my 4K resolution.

Next, I booted back in to OS X and ran it in VMware Fusion. I reinstalled the VMware tools and everything is working great.

So far, everything seems to be running perfectly. I haven't experienced any anomalies or issues at all. it took over 12 hours before my copy of Windows 10 was "activated" but now it is and all is fine. I'd have to say that overall, it went smoother than I expected it to.

I use win 10 education. But I had two problems after a clear install. The first problem is right click in background too long.. ex create new folder must be 3-5sec, fixed by disable Intel HD Graphics menu in right click). Second problem is the way BootCamp manager use 20-30% CPU, and just fix when i restart @@. Anyone has the same problem? Bootcamp use CPU when it's lagging.

So your activation is complete in both the bootable Windows and in your VMware Virtual Machine using the bootable image? That is good to hear as earlier posts indicated that attaching VMware Fusion to the bootable image broke the existing activation.

I've been going back and forth with Parallels CS trying to get everything to work. After much trial and error it looks like both Microsoft & Apple need to update software to fix the issue.

Microsoft has an activation issue that is still in work and Apple has yet to update boot camp drivers. Parallels needs to address their software once this has been done.

Finally got it to install on my mid 2014 15". Played around with it a bit and everything works great so far. Put the Bootcamp drivers on a USB stick and they installed with no problems.
