How was your upgrade?

I received a notification from the Catalyst Control app that there was an update available. I hit update just for it to tell me that it cant find any AMD hardware and now I cant open catalyst at all. I've tried running the installer from the boot camp install and picking the option for repair but still no change.

Now that I am in Windows 10, Windows Update show two AMD driver updates but its unable to install either of them :(

MBP 15in Mid 2015 with AMD

I have a 2008 mac pro with a gtx 285 video card and 16 gb ram that has windows 7 installed through bootcamp on its own drive and it has all worked fine for over 6 years through several OSX upgrades from Leopard to Yosemite.
It's all activated and I have the original disks too.
I downloaded the 32 and 64 bit ISO images for windows 10, although I don't remember which one I have and whether it's possible to use the 64 bit instead if the computer is capable.
I think the mac pro is capable, but I only had a windows 7 32 bit to use when I installed it through bootcamp originally.
Does anyone have any information about trying to upgrade this sort of system?
Can I just upgrade windows while I am in windows 7 or should I install the windows 10 ISO using bootcamp over the old win 7 or onto a new drive?

Copy the ISO to your windows desktop and mount the IOS as a virtual drive. Once it's mounted and shows as a virtual drive, go into the directory (file explorer) and run the Windows setup. once the Windows 10 setup menu is up, select upgrade and follow the instructions from there.

I would download the bootcamp drives onto a usb stick just in case you need them afterwards.

Also, you need extra software to mount the ISO as a virtual drive.

32 bit Windows can only see and use up to 4 GB RAM. 64 bit can use much more. Look up your system info. If it shows more than 4GB RAM then you have 64 bit Windows.

It'll tell you directly from the System. You'll either see "system type: 64-bit Operating System, x64 Based Processor", or something like "32-bit Operating System on x64 Based Compatible Processor" if you're running a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit processor. If you see anything in there about an x86 processor on that line, you're stuck with 32-bit.

Anyone else who uses BootCamp+Fusion having problems with activation on the free upgrade?

I did the upgrade in BootCamp mode and it worked great, activated with no problem. But as soon as I set it up to run under Fusion, it broke activation and refused to re-activate even when going back to BootCamp.

@m4v3r1ck and others...

So this morning I decided to try to upgrade my Windows 8.1 VM to Windows 10, even though I already have a Windows 10 VM. I just wanted to see if it would work or not. When I clicked the upgrade button from the System Tray it came back and said it couldn't upgrade due to the VMware SVGA driver, as some have experienced in this thread. I did some looking around on the VMware forums and found this simple process to make the upgrade work.

 1. Uninstall VMware tools
 2. Restart Windows
 3. Deleted all files in c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download
 4. Run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD as Administrator
 5. Go to Windows Update and Windows 10 started to download.
 6. After download installation of Windows 10 started.
I followed several things in that thread, linked above, and none worked for me until I got to this process. It worked like a charm and the upgrade is proceeding right now.

Disclaimer: This particular installation of Windows 8.1 was a conversion from Apple Boot Camp to Fusion 7 last year when Fusion 7 was released. Not that it has much, if any, impact on this upgrade process.

Hi!

Quick update from me. Thanks for your updates girls/guys!

Managed to upgrade my EFI Windows 8.1 (OEM) using VMWare Fusion!

Booted back in EFI and Windows is NOT ACTIVATED! :-( Perhaps I have to call MS tomorrow for a new key.

Having/had issues with:

1. ATI drivers, but this is caused by the Fusion VGA driver install, after rebooting EFI Windows installed the drivers.

2. NVidia driver package completly gone, had to re-install. See ATI note.

So no bootscreen without an EFI graphics card.

3. Can't turn on RAPID MODE in Samsung Magisian 4.6 which I had to re-install.

4. EVGA PRECISION X 16 not enabled, still troubleshooting that.

5. Immediatly turned off auto updates and installs, will download the MS (settings) tweak soon!

Had some BSODs in Fusion! Will post creencaps later. Still tweaking settings in Win10.

Keep you posted!

Cheers

Samsung Magician is not updated yet. If RapidMode was activated before the upgrade it stays activated but it is unstable and should not be used until an update. If you try to activate RM after the update you will see the app doesn't support Windows 10 yet.

RM was activated in Win8.1 but had to re-install for the SM to apear in Win10 and YES, it's not compatible yet!

Cheers

My Magician RM stayed activated but I just found it made the system shakey. Anyway I looked at benchmarks on ssdreview and RM doesn't improve app performance. It's just good to have Magician for firmware updates.

Since when does "keep apps and documents" mean an almost clean install of Windows 10? Don't know what happened, but this has been a terrible upgrade path and outcome for me. Spending ONE more day tomorrow to solve this, or else I'll revert back to Win 8.1

Going in cool down mode now and have a beer!

Cheers

Got it on a VM (HyperV) in the office. Looks fantastic and it works great. Nothing I would leave OS X for, but still a really strong offering.

Did you have the VMware Fusion display driver when you were finished? My attempt in a VMware Windows 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10 seems to be working, but all I have available for a display adapter is the basic Windows adapter which only has 3 fairly low resolution settings. I need the Fusion 3D accelerated graphics display adapter so I have available a 2550 x 1440 resolution again. Attempting to reinstall VMware tools doesn't seem to complete, and changes nothing.

Just got done playing with it for 30 minutes and I think I've had enough. It was slick, sure, but the interface left me feeling so disorganized. On OSX I can have a billion things going at once and keep track of them all with ease but on Win10 I was suffocating just trying to remember which settings window was which.

OSX for life.

Don't get me started. There are so many UI inconsistencies, some of which are salvageable and some which are driving me up the wall.
 • Some apps are closed by double-clicking the top-left corner
 • Some apps are made full-screen by double-clicking the top-left corner
 • Some things are updated through the Settings app
 • Some things are updated through the Store app
 • Some apps have traditional menus
 • Some apps have a menu behind an ellipsis button
 • Some apps have a menu behind an air vent button
 • At least one app has a Settings menu option with no settings in it
Need I go on? :p

Hi hfg, thanks for your info's!

It didn't finish with the "VMware Fusion display driver" and even got a BSOD: "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (epfwwfp.sys)"

WIN10PROX64_update_driver_issues.JPG

After reboot Windows 10 didn't detect my PC GTX-670, so I had to completely re-install NVidia driver package:

WIN10PROX64_update_driver_issues_1.JPG

I too have a very crappy resolution in full screen running the bootcamp drive VM:
It seems that the Windows 10 upgrade killed so many apps, that I have to troubleshoot what I did 'wrong'?:

WIN10PROX64_update__issues_3.JPG

Many "startup at login/windows boot" apps are killed as well.

Even the activation was killed by the upgrade:

WIN10PROX64_update__issues_2.JPG

From Windows Event Viewer:

faultstring><detail><HRESULT>0xC004C003</HRESULT><Messages><Message>103 (Activation) - [PA Product key blocked. ---> Product key blocked]</Message></Messages></detail></soap:Fault></soap:Body></soap:Envelope>) 00010003(0x8004FC01, 23:50:16:653)

I was signed in with my local user account with administrators rights, very confusing indeed. Any one here to give me some directions to troubleshoot my very crippled upgrade? Appreciated! I really don't want to do a clean install atm due to apps installed and their tweaks. Calling MS after lunch.... fingers crossed!

Seems I'm not the only one....

The windows upgrade went through pretty smoothly. Yes the download did take quite some time and then it switched over to downloading further updates. But once the downloading part was over it was pretty much smooth sailing.

Hi there, I tried to update my bootcamp Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on my 12" Retina Macbook. The download worked fine and when to computer rebooted to continue the installation it just reboots again to Windows 8.1 like nothing happened. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this and update to Windows 10 from an existing Windows 8.1?

Had the same issue, Windows 10 did NOT install because of failures "under the hood". Have no solution yet.

Good luck!

Congrats! Always nice to see someone has been lucky!

They vast majority have no issues with the install process because they aren't using VMs which haven't been updated for true Windows 10 support, or EFI mode which Windows doesn't quite see as a PC UEFI, and others know that they should install the Bootcamp drivers after installation is complete.

Thanks for your additional upgrade notes! May come in handy for future upgrades.

Yeah some people should wait for software updates for Bootcamp, VM apps, Samsung Magician, etc before upgrading to Windows 10. There is no rush. Hopefully Apple will support true EFI in Bootcamp for machines with less than EFI 2.0

Sure!

What I really not fully understand why so many applications where deactivated by the Windows 10 upgrade. All my hardware is working properly - checked in Device Manager - so that's not a problem atm.

Glad that my Windows 10 got the activated status now! Must have been the busy server issue I read about.

Still have to troubleshoot all the missing (startup) applications!

Cheers

Upgraded BootCamp from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro on a 7.1 Macbook Pro 13 Mid 2010. Downloaded the Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft.

Did an upgrade using "keep nothing" and needed to install BootCamp drivers and my applications after that again, I wanted a "clean" install. Had some minor issues with drivers ( both BootCamp [ Windows HFS+ ] and Microsoft [ Nvidia] ), they are solved now.

The Laptop is not supported by Apple for Windows 8/8.1. Everything is working, including backup and recovery.

Very nice little system, my daily workhorse. Running 90% Windows, 10% OSX.
