How was your upgrade?

No need for one.
Reserve your copy
Click install when prompted, then go make a brew. ;)

Just grab the ISO, mount it and run the setup.

Thanks! I didn't now it was supposed to be easy. I went to Microsoft and used the Windows 10 Upgrade Tool - no need for the app icon to appear, no need for making an ISO, it just upgraded. Took forever to download but it was a smooth ride, no need to type licence key or even wifi password, it just worked like before including printer.

Everything installed fine on my 2011 iMac. My volume and brightness controls no longer work though. Do we have to wait until Apple updates the bootcamp drivers?

Installed it on Macbook Pro mid-2012. Light years ahead of 8.1, and minus some two finger scrolling issues, everything worked fine out of the box (I think I used the bootcamp drivers from 8.1, but don't quote me on that).

As previously mentioned, you have to run Boot Camp setup again in Windows 10 even though Boot Camp is already installed (if you don't have the Boot Camp software package, you can download it from Apple).

On my 2009 iMac when I ran it, it only gave me the option to REPAIR Boot Camp, I did the repair and after a restart all the keys were functioning normally again (screen brightness and volume buttons work).

Here's an idea. Why not remove any VMware stuff if it's not being used? I have Win10 in a VMware fusion VM so it is fine.
What I find amusing is that I have been running the Windows 10 beta in a VMware Virtual Machine on the cMacPro with no driver issues. That VM was initially a duplicate of the 8.1 environment and updated to the 10 beta.

It is only when I attempt to update the bootable Windows 8.1 that I run into this roadblock.

For those who have been able to upgrade to Windows 10 on their bootcamp partitions, how does the new version of the OS run on a Mac? I always found Windows 8.1 to be sluggish on my iMac's bootcamp partition.

I did the repair too, but it didn't do anything. I'll try one more time.

I am surprised. I started the upgrade with 10GB free HDD space. Still have 3GB free although new Windows folder takes 16GB and Windows.old folder takes 18GB.

So Windows 10 must have removed about 10GB of Windows junk from other folders.

Worked seamlessly, well impressed with the whole process.
I like the new GUI, very modern and i could see me making the change on the Macs too - but i want to wait and see first.

Weird. That's all I did to get them to work.

It's running well on this 2009 24" iMac that's not even supported.

Understandably, W10 is a little buggy though, occasionally things don't work after a restart, generally a second restart solves them. Today for example, out of the blue, the weather and news live tiles are no longer updating - they were working great yesterday. Then after a few restarts the Weather one started working again but only as long as the tile isn't large, resizing to Medium, or Wide makes it work. o_O

Also nothing is downloading from the Store, not even updates; tried running WSReset.exe but everything is still stuck at 0.0MB and no idea what else to try to fix it. I think this is going to be a work in progress for a little while, my understanding is that MSFT already has updates and patches in the works for release later this month and the fall, but overall it's promising.

I think I will hold off for a bit. I have a 2011 iMac. Windows 8.1 runs ok-ish on my bootcamp partition, but the start up is incredibly slow and there is some lag from time to time. I was hoping that Windows 10 would run smoother on bootcamp than Windows 8.1. This may one day be the case, but I don't want to upgrade if there are still a ton of issues to work out.

Yeah, I get those two problems all the time. Win10 still has a bunch of little bugs that don't effect stability at all, but can be slightly annoying in the right circumstances. Like the new Mail app sometimes gets a little flaky, and it seems notifications only work when they feel like working.

Nothing huge at all, but it's why I'm recommending people wait about a month or two before upgrading. Win10 could still use a bit more spitshine polishing.

Im not sure what you mean.

That driver that is installed currently is not compatible with 10.

Remove it.

Install 10.

Update to latest drivers from vmware.

My iMac, i ran windows 8.1 in a bootcamp. I also had vmware fusion access it so it installed drivers to the bootcamp. I must have been using a newer version than you lot, as my upgrade to 10 went without issue.

I also ran 10 preview in a separate VM. Also without issue.
That's weird. Have you resolved this yet?

I have Windows 10 in a vmware VM and it's working fine and is using the same display adapter yours says is incompatible. If you haven't already, and are still in the Windows 8 VM, try uninstalling vmware tools, reboot the VM, and re-install the vmware tools. Then try the Windows 10 upgrade again.

Dumb question but has Vmware come out with a new set of Vmware utilities that you install? Maybe for that product you need to way for an update?
Not to my knowledge, but one could try the Fusion Technology Preview, for free until the end of the year, which is a beta for El Capitan.

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for all your advise regarding updating in a VM. Just testing the final update of my 10240 to Gold to check compatibility. Will try your work-arounds/vmware tools reinstall!

Cheers

So, to answer my own question (posted earlier), to me the trackpad on my Macbook Pro Retina seems much smoother under Windows 10 than it did under Windows 8. That was always a major disappointment to me on Windows 8. This is a pleasant surprise.

I don't have Windows boot camped anymore, but I do have a Dell M3800 which is a close competitor to the rMBP and believe me when I say W10 on this machine blows the rMBP out of the water for productivity, UI speed, and native app support.

Apple and OS X need to pull a rabbit out of their hat with El Capitan to convince people to pay a premium to operate in their walled garden (as good as it is).

I REALLY like Windows 10, I have never been so happy with an OS as W10 is right now.

That's a beast of a laptop. Before my wife settled on a late 2013 15" rMBP, we almost bought the M3800 but decided that we had been using Windows for so long and wanted to try MacOS.
I have been keeping an eye on eBay for a M3800 and if I find one for a reasonable price, I will snatch it. :D

You're not going to like the fact I won it :)

Nearly sold it unopened about 6 months ago but the RRP and the street value were very different ($3999 vs $2800) but still, glad I kept it, now i have two beasts.

The truth is the hardware in all 15" rMBP top models all perform within 10% of the best thin pro laptops. And none have a screen as beautiful as the Mac. I have the 3800x1800 touch screen and its nice, but about half the image and colour quality of the mac. Also it has slow pixels when cold, gets a bit blurry on fast moving objects.

I just erased my boot camp partition on which I had previously upgraded my Windows 7 to 10, wanting to double it in size. Downloaded the x64 iso from MSFT under OSX and burned a dvd and then ran Boot Camp assistant to install on a newly created boot camp partition.

The clean install went pretty much the same as Windows 7 did, I had to reformat my boot camp partition and select my Windows 10 version (Home or Pro, in my case it was Pro) and left the key blank when it asked for it. I was asked to enter the key at least another two times during the latter part of the install but kept leaving it blank (skip).

Once the install completed and finally got into my desktop, I went to see the activation status, it said not activated. When I clicked to Activate it failed (gave an error code and said something like the key ending with 3V66T was blocked) - I panicked for a bit thinking I now have to call MSFT for help on launch weekend and who knows how long that'll take...

Before I called MSFT, I proceeded to install my Boot Camp drivers (up until then, the screen res was very low, keyboard controls were not working etc...), after BC was installed and restarted, I went to check activation status and lo and behold it now said my windows was activated. :)

So I know now for sure that once activated via upgrade, any new clean install on the same hardware, even if the HD was re-partitioned differently, will activate without a key. Good job MSFT!

@m4v3r1ck and others...

So this morning I decided to try to upgrade my Windows 8.1 VM to Windows 10, even though I already have a Windows 10 VM. I just wanted to see if it would work or not. When I clicked the upgrade button from the System Tray it came back and said it couldn't upgrade due to the VMware SVGA driver, as some have experienced in this thread. I did some looking around on the VMware forums and found this simple process to make the upgrade work.

  1. Uninstall VMware tools
  2. Restart Windows
  3. Deleted all files in c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download
  4. Run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD as Administrator
  5. Go to Windows Update and Windows 10 started to download.
  6. After download installation of Windows 10 started.
I followed several things in that thread, linked above, and none worked for me until I got to this process. It worked like a charm and the upgrade is proceeding right now.

Disclaimer: This particular installation of Windows 8.1 was a conversion from Apple Boot Camp to Fusion 7 last year when Fusion 7 was released. Not that it has much, if any, impact on this upgrade process.

I have discovered two things that can cause system instability.

1. Don't use Microsoft sign in for logging in to Windows unless you have a very solid internet connection. My connection has been dropping this weekend and that meant long time to log in and some instability. Use the local account log in method instead. Same goes for OSX.

2. Samsung Magician software isn't yet updated for Windows 10 and RapidMode can cause issues. Disable this software for now. You don't need it anyway.

Just a little update on the problem i was having with the headphones not working, installing the drivers again didn´t work but uninstalling them first and let windows search for the drivers help it and all it working again.

Just realized that on my Macbook Pro Retina I no longer have the ability to adjust brightness, even after re-installing the latest boot camp drivers. When I press the brightness buttons I get a circle with a line through it on the screen. The volume buttons for comparison work fine. Interestingly, after installing the boot camp drivers my display showed up as "Microsoft Generic Display Driver" or something to that effect. Wouldn't allow me to change resolution. Deleted the driver in Device Manager, rebooted, not it appears as Intel Iris 5100 and I can change my resolution. Weird. Any ideas?

Windows 10 installed ok on an iMac 5k using an ISO image from MSDN on release day. I couldn't get any graphics drivers working properly for the GPU (AMD R9 295x in my case). I'd done the same a few weeks back with the last Insider Build before RTM of Windows 10 on a 2015 Macbook Pro with an AMD R9 M370X, and also had AMD driver problems.

Windows 10 works fine in VMware Fusion of course, but I've gone back to Windows 8.1 on the iMac for gaming. After I did a clean 8.1 Pro install I got prompted to upgrade to Windows 10 straight away -- LOL!

Roll on Bootcamp and/or AMD driver updates!
