They still sell it retail, but mainly it's licensing fees from all those PC makers!
They are also getting tougher on their licensing terms. When I upgraded my PC last month I had to pull a tooth to get them to approve transfer of the license to a new motherboard. They wanted me to buy a new license because they claimed it wasn’t being used on the same computer.

Windows 11 and android 12 both look better than apples software times are changing
Am I crazy. Does Windows 11 not look like a bad copy of Mac OS, the only reason Android Apps are on Windows, is because Apple integrated iOS apps on the Mac.

Android just got pretty colors system wide, then just added privacy features to catch up to iOS… but not fully, to continue to mine they users data.

Sorry I have the complete opposite experience. I often find myself having to YouTube how to fix something, or connect something on Windows. The saying “it just works” isn’t just a saying for Macs. Windows just feels bloated, and unintuitive. If anything Macs are too simple, probably why they run so smoothly.

Windows running Android apps. TikTok as an example.
Does anyone else already see the security risks involved or is it just me?

Microsoft today held an event where it unveiled Windows 11, the next generation of Windows with a new design, new versatility capabilities, gaming improvements, and more. One notable announcement was that, starting with Windows 11, PCs will be able to run Android apps.

Logically, Microsoft would partner with the Google Play Store to offer Android apps on its platforms. However, the company is taking a different route, partnering with Amazon to open Windows 11 to Android apps. As reported by The Verge, users will search for an Android app offered through the Amazon app marketplace directly within the newly redesigned Microsoft App Store.

Android apps will run on the platform using Intel's "bridge technology." Like traditional Windows apps, Android apps can be added to the new centered Windows taskbar, pinned, and snapped to different multitasking modes. Specific details remain unknown, such as hardware requirements and developers' need to make their Android apps runnable on Windows 11.

Microsoft's announcement draws comparisons to Apple's announcement with macOS Big Sur last year and its transition to Apple silicon. Thanks to Apple silicon and the common architecture shared among Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, macOS can now run iPhone apps.

Despite Apple's best intentions, the experience of running iOS apps on Apple silicon Macs has been rough due to Mac's input being fully trackpad and keyboard-based, compared to the direct touch experience the apps were initially designed for. Apple has attempted to solve the issue by introducing touch alternatives, which turn the Mac trackpad into a "virtual touch screen."

so i am going to assume that windows 10 ARM was only intended for tablets and that microsoft has no interest in supporting apple silicon? it would make sense because supporting apple silicon = more people buying mac = more people using mac os = decline of windows in the long run.
90% of computers will be ARM in 5 years. Windows on arm will be the standard version.

not sure what bloated for you but for me i rare got this issue with x86 windows or linux anymore. Old times linux much hassle but with ubuntu come out much2 better ux . If something wrong easily can check event viewer but for macos , had to search all log so on.

I still highly doubt that. Windows main appeal is compatibility.

ARMs main advantage is the support for flexible instruction widths, therefore allowing for more flexible decoder designs and the ammount of competition in the field.

X86 designs will use power gating inside the decoder to combat this.
(remember that both ARM and X86 run on microOPs inside regardless of the arch)

There is also much more competittion now with AMDs Zen archs and the chinese X86 designs. (remember that China is the biggest market)

Seems like a good update. Good that you can update from Windows 10 without paying. But I prefer macOS

Interesting.
Will Windows 11 run on Apple Silicon? That is the bigger question imho
This won't be a priority for Microsoft since there is little demand for Windows for ARM. Enterprise customers are important for Microsoft and in enterprises there is a lot software developed in house. Nobody has any interest to invest a lot of money to create ports if this software to run on ARM.

What people love about Windows is that software written many years ago will most certainly run on the latest version of Windows.

The aesthetics and partnering with Amazon for apps imo shows the trajectory Microsoft is heading. It's to pre-populate the Windows on ARM App Store with compatible apps (via Amazon App Store).
When the ftc forces an Amazon retail/AWS split, Microsoft will buy AWS and itself spin off it's Xbox/gaming assets. Apple, google, and Microsoft become the three dominant tech companies in the US (with little cross-compatibility, but highly duplicative--think big-3 automakers) and well positioned to counter Huawei (CN Microsoft) and Xiaomi (CN Apple).

Yeah, they are spending sooo much money on Microsoft, yet Microsoft is fighting so hard to get people interested in their products lately with anti-Mac ads, anti-iPad ads and also including today's intro of Windows 11, AKA Mac....on top of Windows. They couldn't even keep their stores open, they had to close them. Yeah Microsoft is doing sooo well as competitors to Apple.
Or, MS has never even been sniffed by Apple in the most lucrative market (enterprise) and thus has the funds to battle apple in the areas they have made inroads/bested in last decade--consumer and mobile.

Never forget that most of Apple value is tied up with continuing to convince Western, largely American consumers to pay huge premiums for iphones over increasingly indistinguishable Android phones. Risky.

Yes it is. All OS platform data: Windows slowly going downward in terms of percent of all OS in use. Android going upward.

interesting data: iOS and MacOS combined, in the not too-ish near future will run almost as many devices as Windows.
It speaks to how many people are and will be using mobile devices, versus PCs, for online tasks. Windows isn’t going anywhere but their previous massive dominance is relegated to history.
Given that the browser is what is being used on all, doesn't that mean Google via chrome is what is winning? For many people, the OS is just foundation for the browser.

Windows on arm has a translation layer already that runs x64 apps at near native speed, just like Rosetta 2. For many legacy programs, there will never be a need to transition the code.

On the contrary, Apple US prices imo are competitive with the offerings from, let's say, Samsung US. The starting MSRP price (disregarding promos/deals) for the base iPhone 12 and base Galaxy S21 are both $799. In the US, imo Apple's pricing is on par with the competitors.

This is in contrast to my country, where the base 64GB iPhone 12 is $900 (!!) while the 256GB Galaxy S21 is ~$800.

So imo although Apple has high marketshare in western countries, they have higher margin and growth in the emerging markets. And it seems that there are pressure for more competitive pricing in western markets like the US, while the Apple brand enjoys a more luxurious status in emerging markets, allowing Apple to set higher prices (imo).

That depends if it’s an OEM version or not. Do you have retail or OEM?

OEM is tied to the motherboard - to one PC.

The retail version can certainly be transferred to another PC.

Right, it's competitive with the s21, among the highest priced Samsung models and one that does not represent the bulk of Samsung sales globally. Most of those Samsung phones aren't even available in the US. Iphones are wildly overpriced (~3x premium) compared to the CN makers. US is weathering that tide via direct bans now, but not many years until there are comparable native Vietnamese, etc brands.

As we move into a period where smartphones are globally ubiquitous and OS increasingly indistinguishable, will the 20-somethings still be willing to drop a grand on a "status symbol" from a previous generation, or are they going to instead divert funds to their video game avatars or whatever the hell young people will be into? The "iphone as status symbol in developing world" was true in the mid-10's, but those people are now 40 and the young just think of the phone as a platform to get to the content/communication. This is why the camera is such a core part of the phone--in the future will be weird AR functionality as people develop and demonstrate status online directly rather than via flashing an expensive device in the "real world".

Look at brands like LV, Gucci, Burberry, BMW, Tesla, etc. They don't have problems being present in emerging markets despite their ultra premium pricing. That's what Apple as a brand is becoming. Desirability and status symbol is a huge driver in Asia. It doesn't matter if you're 40 or 15 years old. They still desire brands like BMW, Nike, and Apple.

There's a reason why all the cheap Chinese brands like Realme and Xiaomi are making AirPods look alikes. People want to be seen as having AirPods.

Anyway, it's OT, so I'll stop. :)

Microsoft is a loser in the tech space, they always have been. They would be 100% lost with Windows and Office. Period. And they are losing a customer base with Windows too otherwise they wouldn't have introduced yesterday Windows 11....."the MacOS version."
