PaperBook

Today we are announcing the PaperBook! It's only 0.1mm thin! Amazing.

Seriously, how thin do they have to be?

The exact case design will probably change, but the expensive part - the mainboard - will probably only be slightly tweaked, and sold to Apple for their ultraportable of the same form/feature factor. The current laptop, as-is, will probably be sold as an Acer, Sony or similar to recoup their costs.

Actually, I don't think that the motherboard per se is that expensive - otherwise you'd see much more interchangeability among motherboards.

The chipsets (e.g. the "965") are very, very expensive to design - but designing a board to use them isn't that big a deal.

Just look at a company like Asus (http://usa.asus.com/products1.aspx?l1=3)- it has lots of different mobos for different chipsets/northbridges/southbridges and whatever. If mobo design/manufacture were that expensive, they'd be out of business.

How could there be so many different PC mobo suppliers if it were some magical, esoteric, expensive art to make a mobo. The silicon is expensive to build, but the mobos are cheap.

the goldish color/trim looks incredibly tacky, but i like the overall design.

is it just me, or does this look startling similar to the MBP, almost a "revised" MBP? keyboard, features, trackpad, etc... when opened, it looks just like a MacBook Pro, but in black with a fancier screen/keyboard.

we'll see what apple delivers, because i'm in the market for a new notebook this summer and I want a revised MBP. improve the exterior casing design (maybe keep "Apple Silver" and get rid of champagne) and i'd be happy.

eew... I don't like it... It's like a purse... lose the (not intending to be sexist) feminine look, and the strap, stick a little light up apple on it, and mac os x, then I would buy it, cause it does have nice specs, at least the thin and light part. Apple, be inspired, or surprise us with an even more technologically advance notebook that's, oh, half an inch thin and has santa rosa, lots of dedicated vram, lots of disk space and RAM, and all the other things I'm pretty sure that you won't put in the computers in combpnations we'd like... . But that would be sweet if apple did that!

How do those flash drives compare in speed to the hard drive? Seems that the swap file would be a bottle neck on something like this on anything but some web browsing.

As a student, I carry my laptop into, and around school, so every gram counts...

As a businessman, I carry my laptop through airports, meetings, transatlantic and transpacific flights, shuttles, trains, taxis and whatever.

Size, weight and battery life are *much* more important than raw power on tasks that I'd do on my office or home workstations anyway.

They are much faster than spinning HDs, this means pretty much instant start-up :)

Other advantages include silence, resistance to being shaken about and they are less prone to failure...

ok, one more, just 'cause i'm bored:

doesn't look anything like a MBP. note the width of the keyboard, for example.

wtf was this tangent?
If you'd looked at the poster's handle, you wouldn't have needed to reply ;) ...

This is what Intel's metro notebook looked like when it was demo'ed last month at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, China. It's really just a toy, compared to even a $499 Wal-mart notebook.

Ok please do not take this wrong, but I first though when i read this, ok MacBook Pro rip off, and then I looked at the pic with the straps and different colors and I'm sorry but I don't think many men would buy one of these lol. I'm not being descriminative but it's just like cars... in general how many straight guys own a Mazda Miada??? Really? Just my prediction... Time will tell!

But it takes a real man to wear a laptop like a womens purse :p

Nice work ...

Nice work on replacing the screenshot.

Good thing Apple has a set selection of computers because if they listened to their users they'd never actually release any computers what with all the upgrades, adjustments and features they'd be adding and removing.

personally i think .7" isn't that much thiner than MBP's ~1", but the MBP can really lose some weight.

To achieve its small size, the laptop uses flash memory in place of a standard hard drive. This addition also improves battery life up to 14 hours. Also included is wireless connectivity with options for cellular, Wi-Fi or WiMax networks, fingerprint reader, noise canceling technology, and more. "Price was not a concern" for the design.
This is something I want to see coming soon from Apple! But, hopefully - without these:
Other design-oriented features include different color choices, one side featuring an E Ink screen, and the addition of a shoulder strap (image).

that's a fine looking notebook. design-wise looks like a sleeker, thinner macbook pro.

...why is everyone comparing this to the macbook PRO? Surely such a thin laptop would have heat issues if a pretty powerful proccessor was stuck in there?
