I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but that thing doesn't seem to be running Vista. It looks like it's using XP with the Royale Noir theme and Vista icons. I just found that kind of ironic.

I think the outside looks ugly. Inside is sexy though. And the pics have it running a beta version of Vista! :D:rolleyes:

Yuck that thing is ugly! With the champagne & gold.

And that strap is so gay :)

Apple will probably learn from it and make one with the features that looks a million times better.

Sony has done it

The article does not mention screen size, but this is not much better than the Sony TX/TZ series. And, they include a CD/DVD drive. All I want from Apple is to be able to run OS X on this machine. It is small, light, complete, has great battery life - ok, the processor is not the fastest, but fast enough.

I don't see how just displaying an image on an electronic device couldn't use any power at all, but I didn't check the specs...
E-Ink works by using electrostatic charges to polarize tiny capsules containing different coloured particles. Depending on the polarity of the charge, different particles will be drawn to the top of the capsule and become visible.

Once charged, the capsules have excellent dielectric characteristics and can hold their state for hours, days, or even weeks, without any further attention by the electronic controller.

Another promising feature of E-Ink is an extremely wide viewing angle and high contrast - under most angles of attack and lighting conditions, it compares favourably with conventional ink-on-paper.

ePaper in its most general form uses magnets to to change minature balls that are 2 colors on one size which is charged negivly it will be one color, or the other size that is charged positivly it is an other color. So some power is used to change the direction of these balls once the power is off the balls stay in the same location thus keeping the image.

The process is kinda like the old core memory some old computers had. With Core Memory you could power off the computer and power it back on and continue from where you left off.

I'm a girl and I think those straps/colors are hideous. An aluminum version would be nice, though.

It's not all that much thinner than the MBP now, though.. unless in person .3 inches is more than it looks on paper. A TON lighter, though.

*shrug* I know I'm on the losing side, but although portability and battery life is important to me, I'm not really interested in giving up too much power in exchange.
The colors ar just covers......and being a woman and a techi....I want one

Ok please do not take this wrong, but I first though when i read this, ok MacBook Pro rip off, and then I looked at the pic with the straps and different colors and I'm sorry but I don't think many men would buy one of these lol. I'm not being descriminative but it's just like cars... in general how many straight guys own a Mazda Miada??? Really? Just my prediction... Time will tell!

Who would buy an ipod mini? I like these :)

magnesium... let's hope the battery stays cool or that baby will burn very bright. :D

:p

Ummm..the burning point of Mg is like 3000 degrees.

Edit: However, the original next cube was made of Mg ... so is it possible that Apple is the secret manufacturer behind this? It wouldn't take much styling to make this feel like Apple. It's already thin and sleek, they just need to put some lines on it and change the trim color.

As for the wireless charging, looks like Apple already covered it in one of their patents.

Excerpt of Apple patent:
"In one particular embodiment, both power and data are transferred with non contact based platforms, and more particularly non contact based platforms that are enclosed such as inductive based systems and wireless systems. In inductive based systems, the docking station includes the primary coil and the portable electronic device includes the secondary coil. In wireless systems, both the docking station and the portable electronic device include their own transceiver that both transmits and receives data. In one implementation, both data and power are transferred via the inductance-based system. For example, low frequency electrical current may be passed from the primary coil to the secondary coil in order to power or charge the portable electronic device and high frequency current may be passed from one coil to the other in order to send/receive data. The data and power inductors may be separate, integral or they may be superimposed on one another. In another implementation, power is transferred via an inductance-based system and data is transferred via a wireless system. The combination of inductance and wireless provides an efficient way to transfer both power and data while keeping both the docking station and portable electronic device fully enclosed."

As for the gold color, don't forget this is a proto-type that goes in production. Color can be applied later. As for the 'cost was not an issue', they are talking cost for the prototype development, not your cost in the store.

I'm sorry but I don't think many men would buy one of these lol.

MAN-PURSE!

The Miata is a great sports car, they are autocross and track day favorites. But yes the styling is girly.

Doesn't having an external screen obviate the main benefit of having a case - protection against bumps and scratches?

I'm not sure I (as a touch typist) would like the keyboard too much either.

But the screen (minus gloss), weight, durability and battery life? Yes please!

I used to think that way; lugging my 10 pound 17" HP laptop around Tokyo cured me of that fast. Thinkpad X60 now, under 3 lbs. That's what Apple should be aiming for.

That is fine for a second system, where mainly you want to browse the net, send emails, keep iCal up to date and do some video, voice or text chatting.

If you want one system to use with Photoshop, FC and others like that and you want it portable (relatively speaking), then you need horse power. Today that means weight, tomorrow that may change.

This thing looks totally sleek. 14 hour battery life? Super light weight? That's totally sweet! It might even make me "switch" back to windows if these things really are produced ;)

flash memory?

Does someone think Apple will be putting flash disks into the Macbook pro's by WWDC ? I hope so! 14 hours of battery life !!!!!!!!
