I wonder what their strategy is. Surely it did not escape them that launching a new series thats only 5-10% better than
its predecessor…for a premium price….while saying "hey, we have something even better for a humongous amount of money"
is a risky tactic.

I wouldn’t say worst but I’m disappointed in the lack of pictures of people camping out and queuing for the phone on release!

Was at the Valley Fair store this evening around 8pm. Lots of people inside the store and saw some people buy it. It wasn't as sad as other pics I've seen.. The gf and I played around with it and wasn't too impressed. Thank god she didn't want to upgrade cuz it's throwing money down the drain for buying the same phone. Whew, my wallet thanked me.

It won't thank you at all when she wants the X

Walked past the Apple Store today and there was a line outside with 15-20 people. I’m sure it’s a major success, and I’m sure the X will be a major success as well.

About 30 people in front of my local Apple Store waiting for the next Apple rep to be available. This was pretty late in the evening too.

Haha... Yes it won't, but at least it's a different phone w/ a new experience. If you're on 7, you'd be insane to get an 8

Totally agree. If I have not already owned the iPhone 7 Plus, and I had an older iPhone model like the iPhone 6, I would easily upgrade to the iPhone 8. But owning the iPhone 7, it practically gives me everything I need and want from the latest iPhone, just with a few exceptions from the iPhone 8. But ultimately, the trade off for me is worth the wait with the iPhone X.

Obviously best is yet to come, but today just hasn’t felt like a new iPhone release day.

Yea the AT&T store and Verizon store were empty and not a lot of people waiting before they opened like years past.

For me the 8 is blah and not excited. I always upgrade to the latest and greatest but this time I’m getting an Apple Watch 3 w/cellular.

Depends what the end goal is.

Fast forward to the middle of next year when the hype over the X has subsided and availability is normal (OK, if availability is normal), the bog average iPhone user wanders into a store for their bi-annual upgrade. The average iPhone user currently rocking a 6s will be paying somewhere around £45 per month. For an X, their monthly bill is going to be at least £60 and that’s with a considerable upfront payment (which most UK consumers will shy away from) and the most basic priceplan with an inadequate date allowance. If they say no, but they want an iPhone, their next port of call is the 8. By then, it’ll have settled to the £45-50 per month region. That’s where the sales of the 8 will ultimately come from. It’ll be a slower burn, but there’s no doubt the 8 will sell in huge numbers in the long term.

So many opinions on this forum seem to forget that the X will barely have registered on the radar of the average user. They’ll have seen it on their news feeds, given it a brief look and forget about it because they’re not due an upgrade for a while. And it’ll be a good while before they start seeing the X design in big numbers out in the wild. The majority of iPhone users will still be using the existing models as far ahead as 2019. By then, I would imagine Apple will have a new iPhone in the design of the X but missing some bells and whistles and selling at a palatable price for the mass market.
