I agree.
This repeat same thing with slightly better chip and we keep raising the price thing is not working out too well.
Then they come out very late to the game with an OLED screen that they wont have in stock for another 3-4 months and jack up the price to a $1000.
Hell no.

eventually they are going to have to lower prices to make sales or come up with some breakthrough technology that people "must" have

remember when desktops cost thousands, HDTV's were many thousands, etc

I don’t think it’s the worst release but there is only so much tech and design you can do in each interation.

...on this basis then cars would look the same, iteration after iteration...and bikes...and motorbikes...and clothes...and so on.

The only gadgets that do not follow this cycle, or in a lesser manner, are jewellery and niche luxury or classic gadgets like Rolexes, etc where innovation is of secondary importance, and prestige/appearance is first.

I think they have been lazy/greedy, just my 2 cents.

Like many I have no idea what to buy. Probably nothing! And sit this one out.

I think this has actually been the best iPhone release in awhile.

Queues were well managed. Staff in stores didn’t look like they were running on redbull and wanted to blow their brains out.

Was very busy in stores but patrons weren’t ignorant as all hell and people shared demo models and had casual conversation.

The Apple Watch table was very crowded but everyone was chill.

All around positive experience. Even my 8+ was delivered before noon.

So all around I give Apple high marks.

And the 8+ has been awesome so far.

If people think this is bad, wait for 2018, 2019 and 2020. Apple have laid out their stall now - the X is the next design, so all iPhone releases for the next 3 years at least will be minor upgrades.

I figure what will happen is that the Plus will stay the size it is with smaller bezels and will be the same design with less bezel and Touch ID in the display and face Id.

While the X will remain face id only with no Touch ID built into the display so they can have different price points.

So Porsche doesn’t do a radical shift every model year. It’s more of a subtle evolution.

You mention clothing. If you look at Levi’s who I am using as an example due to its longevity sure they have different washes and designs but they are not different every year.

I don’t think they are lazy or greedy there just is not a whole lot you can do at this point with phone design.

Even the X inspite of not having a home button and the camera lens in a different place still is pretty identifiable as iPhone.

I’m curious about the Galaxy S9 because unless that’s going to be a foldable device it will still look just like its predecessors.

Everyone keeps saying the iPhone X will have an absolutely huge demand. That may be true, but it could go the other way. This is the first time no carrier subsidies were available during an iPhone release.

I dropped over $17 thousand on a new sound system and I still have a problem with an $1150 smartphone. It does not always mean a person can't afford it if they don't like the price like some keep claiming.

It is about priorities for each of us. My boss would not spend what I did on a sound system, but he bought a $77 thousand Chevy Tahoe. I would never spend that much on a vehicle, just like I would not spend that much on a phone.

Exactly. It’s basically 14 year olds with no concept of the value of money who go around the forum trying to rebut any criticism of the X with “just because you can’t afford it”. Neither can you sunshine, and it’d be hilarious if your parents couldn’t either.

Regarding the launch, the X will undoubtedly sell out and remain in short supply for months. But whether it meets Apple’s sales expectations in the longer term is something we’ll only ever be able to guess at. Once the diehard fanatic annual upgraders (and the ones who’ve skipped previous releases in anticipation of the X) have theirs, I’m honestly not convinced the wider phone buying public, in the UK at least, are ready for monthly bills of £70+ for one phone. Particularly when, in the main, they don’t care about OLED screens and there are alternatives that come in much closer to what they’re used to paying.

Visited Apple Store today. No real energy for new phones. Apple rep seemed HIGHLY motivated to sell new phones. Pushed hard to ‘hold’ one and setup appointment even if I changed mind. These are all great reps and have helped me many times.. just seemed like there was definitely incentives to have a big weekend.

Obviously best is yet to come, but today just hasn’t felt like a new iPhone release day.

That's because a new iPhone wasn't released today...

I went to Apple Store and was underwhelmed. Granted I own a 7+ so the phone doesn't offer much of an upgrade. Even the rep I talked to wasn't trying to BS me upsell me like they do when they unveil them.

I think the X will sell out on release but not necessarily mean it's a success. The limited quantity will be a factor. Apple really needed to skip the 8 and made the X and Xplus.

I walked by my local AT&T store about 5 pm tonight and there were literally 2 customers in the whole store. Pretty much a non-event product launch. No real reason to upgrade if you have a 7 or 7+ and some are itching for the X.

You guys obviously didnt get the 8. It is a marvelous phone. We'll see how the 10 does with the limited supply. I see people canceling their orders and buckling down on the 8.

Happy pre-ordering!

Well put.

So a company who’s iPhone 6s beats out brand new flagship Samesung S8’s in benchmarks is behind on innovation huh?

This year has been the most underwhelming year since, well, since 2016, when it was supposed to have been the most spectacular. Whether we are fans of the 8/8 Plus or the X, it is in all of our interests for iPhone sales to take a dive this year, even X sales. And I mean a significant and sustained drop in sales, lasting into 2018 and 2019. Stock prices are down since the keynote and if iPhone sales stay down these next 2years, because let's face it, the 2018 iPhone will be just as underwhelming, it will force Apple to rethink what it serves up in future iterations, rather than treating us all like the suckers that they think we are. Apple will be forced to become an innovative company once again. Here's hoping, for all of our iPhone-interests' sakes, for you, for me, for every iPhone user out there, that Apple takes a massive hit this year. That is the only message Tim Cook will hear loud and clear.

The preorder process this year is more organized. At my Apple store, walk-ins are not allowed for iPhone 8 purchases. If you want to purchase from the store, you have to order online for store pickup and select the pick up time that is available and work for you. This way people are spread out throughout the day when picking up their orders instead of swarming all at once, definitely less stressful for the employees and it made for a more pleasant experience when interacting with them.

They even continue to sell a new "special edition" 6 in Europe and Asia.
In Romania carriers still sell the iPhone 5 (refurbished) along side the 8.
It’s 2017, the iPhone 5 came out in 2012.

For a phone that is supposedly a flop, it’s still sold out everywhere. I think Apple purposely kept it around because they knew the X would be out of reach for many people, especially since it’s new tech that has yet to prove itself. Next year year is going to be all about the X and X Plus, once the X has established itself as a reliable platform.

That likely means there is panic from upper management because they are not seeing the sale volume

I just got back from the Apple Store because I wanted to check out the 8 and 8 Plus. It's not the most exciting design, but it's definitely a nice phone. It's certainly an upgrade from my 6s Plus, especially with $300 credit for trade in. I'm much more ready to consider it now.

Thats not very accurate. Of course it'll be sold out when stores get low supply. My local best buy got 8 phones and AT&T store had 2. Lol. Just go on Apple and you can get many of the phones in a week or less. That has never been normal with Apple for such a long time.

I am sure it is a marvelous phone. I'm tempted to get one but my 6S is still marvelous to me. iOS11 seems really good on it so far

I don’t get the hyperbole. It’s just a phone. Traded in my 6 for an 8. It’s a nice upgrade for me and the gold colour although markedly different from the ‘old’ gold is rather nice.

Arrived at the store 20 minutes early and was led to the front of the prepaid line. Hardly anyone else there, maybe 15 people across both lines. Had to return the phone today due to a problem with the screen but just walked in, no queues at all, and swapped out for a brand new replacement within minutes.

Clearly not so much interest in the 8/plus but I like it although the haptic home button takes some getting use to.
