perhaps part of the "speed" of the new system is that your iPhone 8 will *always* or often be scanning for your face so by the time you go to even put it up against a pay terminal it is already well aware who is holding it and can just approve the transaction.

all the naysayers here... i get it, to me it seems counterintuitive that it could be more secure and faster but lets see what Apple has to show. i can't imagine they would introduce something slower, more inconvenient, and less secure than TouchID so lets at first hear them out, perhaps we all will end up amazed.

Do you find yourself in many situations where law enforcement is asking to access your phone?
Nope. Just don't care for the possibility, no matter how remote.

• I live in Arizona, Phoenix to be exact. Not exactly San Francisco or Seattle.
• My career has involved working for newspapers who have regular, routine contact with legislators or city staff.
• I deal weekly with copysetting legal documents for our newspapers.

The average citizen would be surprised to discover how their civic representatives act in person or what they try to bury in city ordinances or how reporters get treated when filing FOIA requests and so on. The natural inclination of government is to hide the aspects they don't want the public to see while making it easier for government to expose the privacy of the public - while zealously protecting it's own privacy.

Local government and it's agencies can be some of the worst.

Am I the only one who thinks dropping Touch-ID would be a ridiculously bad move?
For starters they just brought it to MacBooks so leaving it out of other products would simply be an inconvenience to everyone.

As many habe already mentioned, facial recognition even combined with an iris scanner (and I wouldn’t trust a laser produced by the cheapest manufacturer to scan my eyes one bit) isn’t even half as secure as a finger print.
Plus what about:
- if you change your hairstyle,
- if you’re wearing sunglasses or a hat (or in winter something to keep your ears warm),
- if you shave your beard (or grow one),
- if (with the iris scanner) you’re wearing contact lenses?

Anything that is neither as fast or as secure or as convenient as a finger print scanner isn’t an improvement and shouldn’t be incorporated into the flagship of the company.

So, yeah, if the rest was good enough to persuade me of getting an 8 instead of a 7s, I’d probably go without Touch-ID. But there would have to be a hell of a lot of greatness to make me do so.

I still use passcodes.

Currently, US case law says law enforcement can legally demand a fingerprint to unlock your device. But they cannot demand a passcode.

Don't think it's a stretch for the courts to see your face the same way as your fingerprint.

I could easily do too many "attempts" at unlocking with my fingerprint so that it would revert to requiring a passcode.

It would work for most people as they would just rationalize that Touch ID was not needed. It happens each time when Apple makes a big change. When MagSafe was out, people would always comment on why this is a big reason to get a Mac over a Windows. Now that it is gone, it is not longer the reason and MagSafe is suddenly not useful for many people.

When OLED was not rumored and not on the iPhone, the comments would mostly be about how OLED is just not realistic and burn in is too big of a problem. Now that it will be on the next iPhone, it is suddenly a great screen. Same for Touch ID. Many comment on how great of a feature it is for the iPhone and how it has changed security and how it being in the front is a big deal. When it is gone, people will say it wasn't that great and a facial scanner is amazing. People will rationalize their purchases in due time. It always happens and it always will, especially with Apple products.

I will believe Apple drops Touch ID on the new iPhone when they announce it. Until then a rumor is still a rumor.
I don't think I've tuned into more rumour spreaders on YT than during the iPhone 8 lead-up.

Even the most reputable uploaders flip-flop on a weekly basis (talking Everythingapplepro here).

I appreciate their efforts in helping hype up the gadgets I love & their informative research, but they're too convinced on features sometimes.

Probably my own fault for giving them too much credit...

Good theory but the battery drain would be incredible, I believe.

As long as it works why would I care how it works??

Even if it has to turn on the screen flash to see your face in the dark? My wife wouldn't be happy with that. And neither would I as my eyes wouldn't be prepared for extra light in many dark situations.

And if it doesn't work when dark then I'm left having to enter a passcode which I find to be an annoyance.

Now, if Apple wants to add it to supplement Touch ID I'm all for it.

I would prefer TouchID over facial recognition.

In the spirit of conjuring up hypothetical situtations ... imagine someone grabs your locked iphone. Then they stick it in front of your face to unlock it. Now they have your phone entirely unlocked and they can now see your inappropriate Safari history.

At least with TouchID, they'd have to grab your finger and put it on the sensor.

And it'll be easier for clever toddlers to unlock your phone when you take a nap (provided FaceID can unlock with closed eyes). Time to buy stock in that Smurfberry company.

Unless of course with facial recognition you are required to blink three times. That would cut down on toddlers stealing your phone, but not a thief.

I'd prefer to hold out and see how a potential facial recognition would work before I decided on if I'm going to get the new iPhone or not. Obviously my preference is Touch ID, but I definitely would not rule out the iPhone if it did away with Touch ID in favor of facial recognition.

I keep my phone in my pocket while driving, and use Siri to read and reply to messages and make phone calls over the Bluetooth stereo. About 50% of the time, Siri tells me I have to unlock my phone before she will read. There is no rhyme or reason when this happens. But, it's easy to reach into my pocket and touch the home button for touchID. A facial requirement would not be possible. Whatever they have planned, I hope it still works without having to pull out my phone while driving.

You do not need to worry as if the banks do not approve that would be the end of Apple Pay and Apple will not let that happen. If it works well, I have no problem with it.

Yes but it's not just Apple Pay I'd be concerned about, it's all the other personal things I do on my phone as well such as banking etc.

If you do not trust it I am sure they will still offer the 6 digit code to open your phone.

None of us have any choice except to wait and no only see which direction Apple goes but also how it is implemented. 3d facial recognition sounds good to me, time will tell.

These days they would chop off your finger and take it with them. Does not matter what anyone prefers, Apple will make the choice for us. Only choice you will have is to buy or not.

Wait and see it is, don't fancy going back to a pin code after the getting used to the convenience of TouchID.

Assuming it happens - I'm going to wait for people's experience before I get an 8. Normally, I'm a first day person but that significant change (and maybe others) I will wait to see what people think and how it really works. Depending what happens - I may actually wait for an update from Apple which will probably come soon after anyway.
Wait will be better than pain.

Interestingly enough, depending on when you pre-order. it's usually others that will have the iPhone 8 before I will. Given that time, that's typically when user reviews start surfacing and what the initial thoughts are with the latest security features. I'm not one that needs to have the iPhone in my hands on day one.
