Even if it has to turn on the screen flash to see your face in the dark? My wife wouldn't be happy with that. And neither would I as my eyes wouldn't be prepared for extra light in many dark situations.

And if it doesn't work when dark then I'm left having to enter a passcode which I find to be an annoyance.

Now, if Apple wants to add it to supplement Touch ID I'm all for it.

They could use IR like Kinect. Check out the video below. Of course the camera on iPhone 8 would need more compact dots to see more details.

That kind of Technology is already available in the compact phone, it my experience it has worked flawlessly in a Surface Pro 4, and can detect me even in complete darkness.

Of course the Surface sensor might still be a bit too big for the iPhone, but we will see.

if iPhone 8 has no Touch ID or face recognition why would you buy it?
I wouldn't. Not going to take two steps backwards

Ah, if only Touch ID got this kind of love back when it was just a rumor!

Trust is earned (and obviously, Touch ID has earned it), so I wouldn't expect a rumor about facial recognition to be widely embraced. It's more interesting to see that so many of the comments are of the passionate, "You'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands" variety. Lighten up, and see what happens.

Rumors are that the 8 will not have Apple Pay. Maybe it would be added later.

all just rumors but it sounds like Apple has to make some choices pretty soon.

Imo the rumors are getting a bit silly now. Apple would never release the iPhone 8 without Apple Pay. It's going to be really interesting when they finally show the phone. But it seems like tech site can say anything now and get easy clicks.

I am betting in a few more months, when Apple has made up their mind, we will get less rumor and more fact. If Apple does not make it's phone secure, the banks would pull out of Apple Pay anyway.

Surely that can't be true.

Launching without TouchID is one thing as perhaps Apple can convince us that 3D Facial Recognition is nearly as secure for everyday use, but to launch without Apple Pay would be ridiculous.

It would be a straight up confirmation by Apple that security was a problem.

I find all this stuff interesting - other than "experts" no one at Apple has said there even be an 8.
As Newtons Apple stated the banks have to all approve face recognition - I can't see all them, particularly the small banks agreeing to that right away. They have to be convinced it is as secure - can't see Apple going backwards but who ever knows with Apple.

You're correct about the banks, of course, although the time consuming part with things like this is normally the legal aspect.

So much will depend on how clever Apple were when they drew up the contracts.

Hopefully they weren't specific on naming the acceptable authentication method as TouchID.

This may allow them to avoid contract rewrites at least and instead just focus on tech demos to persuade the various bank's management teams that the new technology is secure enough for them to approve.

I agree. Can not believe they are down to this.

I feel this could be easily beat with a picture, like Samsung's was. Hopefully it's better. Also worried about how to unlock the phone in the dark.

For one, I wouldn't compare Samsungs technology to Apple. Also, you're not considering how crucial Apple takes security to another level with consumer protection. They likely have been working with facial recognition for years and testing it to make sure it won't be "Defeated by a picture."

Furthermore, Iris scanning uses a different kind of light, which Infrared sensors to detect the Iris in low light.

That s8 "Defeated by a picture" is a scam made by some apple fanboy to discredit Samsung and to gain clicks. :p

I have not actually tested it. But I did hear about that when it launched.

Ya know how many times there's been a rumor apple was doing something and the reaction "oh god I hate that! Ew" as people turn into their own worst version of valley girls. And then the product comes, they warm up to it and it's not even a big deal anymore.

I love Touch ID on my phone, but i trust apples decision making here. One of the things I've always loved most about them was that they have such great taste it literally changes the entire industry. So if they found another way to do some kind of Touch ID that's not quite the same, I trust it'll be effective and secure.

Forgive me for hoping that Apple's rollout of facial recognition is successful

This! I have faith in Apple's decision. As Steve jobs mentioned in one of the interviews - people don't know what they want until you show them.

facial recognition is too much of an immature technology at this stage. i heard of a case where they unlocked a phone with a users face-photo. and besides it would probably be another lame excuse for apple to increase the price by yet another 200 on every market currency.

Apple's pricing has been consistent actually. Not much of a difference year on year. Plus facial recognition technology is actually not as immature as you would like to think. Although implementing it properly with such inferior optics is a different challenge altogether.

As long as it's reliable and secure like TouchID, I don't have any problem.

I have one concern: anyone can snatch the phone out of my hands, point it to my face and the phone would unlock. I am looking forward to how Apple is going to tackle this.

I'm sure that would never happen. They first have to make you have a phone with facial recognition and then take the risk in trying to scan your face in the middle of stealing your phone. Someone could of course do it in your sleep, but then it's just as secure as Touch ID. And even if all that happened. I think apple would be smart in adding some kind of lock if it hasn't seen your face for a while.

I think it would definitely make me delay a purchase until we get real user experience on it. Also, as has been mentioned Banks would have to approve going from Touch ID to facial recognition and I suspect we'd hear rumors about that already if banks were being asked.
Thank kind of change would dely my purchase of new phone
