im in highschool, everybody txts in class. hell, I text my mom in class all the time. sometimes there is important stuff that i have to talk about with people.

Yeah, because waiting 50 minutes is a life and death difference.

I know "everybody does it," but don't act like what you're texting is so important that it can't wait.

As to the OQ, I probably wouldn't, because I can type fast enough on the keyboard as is, and I like not carrying extra things. If I'm out somewhere working for more than an hour (actually working, not just doing a few short read-throughs/edits), then I'll bring my iBook.

I love the keyboard, too. It's very thumb friendly.... but I would never want it attached to my iPhone. It's not loud, but it's not silent.

The iPhone keyboard is silent.

ok but i dont mind a small amount of sound. i just want a real keyboard. why cant i have that...

it doesnt have to be attached all the time, it could be attachable and detachable... like the Lg Versa

but i dont have the option to bring my macbook pro most of the time. plus there is plenty of times when i have NEEDED to text in class. its not up to you to decide when i need to txt in class.

the point was not the reason i want the physical keyboard but more why cant i have the option to have one. it would open up the iphone to a lot of blackberry users that really just want a real keyboard. i know 10 people that use blackberrys and the only reason they dont have an iphone is because it doesnt have a physical keyboard.

Just buy a netbook you'll be happier.

do netbooks have OSX? hahaha

i hate Windows, i hate windows Mobile.

the only other operating system i like is blackberry.

I could see advatages of a add on for a physical keyboard. It would be nitch market but it would still be very useful.

If some one doing a lot of Texting/IM a physical keyboard would be faster and easier. One advantage to a physical keyboard over touch screen is it allows you to text with out looking at the phone.

But like others have said you should not be texting during class. It CAN WAIT. most school I know still have a policy if the phone comes out during class it is confiscated on the spot. There is no reason to have one out during class.

I made it threw college with out every needing to text while in class or make calls. Most I would use it would to send/replay to a quick message right before class started/

I don't know how high school changed since I was there, but I think my teachers would have noticed clicking from phones... ;)

I know a lot of (business) people that have BB's, too, and they don't have iPhone's because of two main reasons: 1) they got hooked on BB's before iPhone debuted and don't want to use anything else because it's different and 2) the iPhone won't work with BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) (i.e. if you can't work on the same server, forget it).

one time my mother was locked out of the house and it was raining extremely hard! and she had forgotten the garage code, we change it monthly and i had just changed it and had not had the chance to let her know what it is, and i had to txt her during class. thats just one example, a very bad one but it gets my point across. i sometimes need to txt in class and there is other times i would like to be able to txt without looking down.

the clicking isnt that loud, they notice the vibrate :p hahaha.

most buisnesses are now supporting iphones. i know intel and nike have changed over most of there executives from blackberries to iphone, except for a few. they are holding out for a physical keyboard.

There are at least several types of keyboards that might be useful. Bluetooth or not, as possible. In order of size, from large to small:

1) A full-sized docking station keyboard. Something stationary at home, on which you could type long letters or whatever. Integrated with speakers, etc.

2) A carry-along folding keyboard like this one.. These fold into pocket or purse size. Useful in school or during travel.

3) A small keyboard on the flap of a carrying case. Similar to what the Versa has. The Versa has an optional gamepad as well.

i would love that!!!

that is a little bit big for school... at least for txting... it would work for note taking during class though!

if LG can do it, why cant the iphone! hahaha

I type better with the onscreen keyboard than any other slideout/mobile tiny crappy chiclet keyboard I've ever used. I'd guess the main reason is that those keyboards are not designed with any sense of ergonomics involved, the pressure required to trigger a keypress is often variable and definitely not consistent with a good ergonomics design.

The onscreen keyboard lets me lightly touch each "key" and I still get to do touch typing because at the end of the day, correct touch typing is a huge misnomer as you type by memorizing where your fingers ought to be not feeling your way to find them, so the idea that lacking a physical key to feel as a problem is kind of unfounded. The clicking noise provides the feedback of a key being pressed.

Of course if I was an irresponsible idiot that typed while driving I might have different opinions.

When I was using the Palm Pilot, I found a nice clamshell keyboard that was very useful.

This is the one that I had:

I much preferred this type over the folding type since it was more sturdy and I could not only type faster but could use it on uneven surfaces such as while lying on a bed or using it on my lap.

I would like something like this for the iPhone. It would come in handy when traveling to the point that I could probably not carry my laptop which would be nice.

Large corporations can afford switching. Let's talk about smaller businesses and federal and state agencies that have BB users and have to watch every cent they spend. Changing servers and buying new phones isn't exactly a cost-effective measure to take just to switch people to iPhones.

At my gov't agency, everyone in my division has a BB. To switch servers and buy new iPhones for everyone would be a little out of the question. Money can (and should be) spent doing something better, such as funding research and field studies. I think taxpayers would be very mad if they found out that >$10,000 of their money was spent on iPhones.

Plus, my boss hates iPhones.:mad:

onscreen keyboard works fine. If I had problems using the onscreen keyboard I'd likely get a different phone. Too much bulk

Kind of seems like some people are knee jerking the iPhone/keyboard issue. I'd love to connect Apple's compact Bluetooth keyboard. Pack that for a meeting or roadtrip and I can hammer out a lot of work without bringing a laptop.

I would get it only if it were a case that included a slide out keyboard. While I like the virtual keyboard, I miss having a physical keyboard. I used to be able to type so fast on my old phone that it couldn't keep up. Physical keyboards are more accurate too.

it would be nice to have. have you ever tried texting on the iphone in a class? its hard if you cant look at the screen cuz the teacher might catch you.

Who texts in class anymore? I surf the web, watch youtube, and play Pocket God in class! If my teachers ask, I quickly go into the calculator app and say "I was doing my math homework."

for all of the people talking about "to much bulk" it wouldnt have to be that thick!

and have you seen the battery cases for the iphone? they double the thickness! and a keyboard would be much smaller and could protect the screen.

hahaha... so true... but what if your english teacher was giving a lecture and your txting your girlfriend and then your teacher catches you, then you say " i was doing math homework" even though she was giving a lecture on english? hahaha

I text faster on the iPhone than any other phone, the keys really slow me down. Therefore, I selected no.

have you ever used a blackberry bold? i year guarantee that nobody with an iphone can type faster than me on a blackberry bold. i have an iphone and thats the only thing i miss.

If you like the Bold's keyboard so much why did you get an iPhone? You knew the iPhone's limitations when you got it...

And yes, I used a Bold and I type a lot faster on the iPhone then on the Bold.

Agree 100%.

I use a Bold for work use and an iPhone for personal use. I type much faster on the iPhone. I feel more restricted when using a physical keyboard, because my fingers have to be "right there", whereas on the iPhone, I don't have to have my thumbs hovering over it waiting to type. Maybe that's just my crazy self, though. ;)
