would you buy a Physical Keyboard as an Add on?

I'm happy with the virtual keyboard, and wouldn't use a physical one.

Why? Because the only physical keyboard that I'd use is a full-size or near-full-size keyboard (numeric keypad optional). I like the iPhone because it's small/compact, and easy to carry. Having an extra keyboard would defeat that purpose, and an integrated keyboard would make the iPhone bulkier, would not rotate with the orientation, and would not be configurable (think ".com" key, etc., etc.).

With autocorrect, the virtual keyboard is pretty easy to use.

I text faster on the iPhone than any other phone, the keys really slow me down. Therefore, I selected no.

I completely agree with this and have gotten up to about 60 words per minute in portrait mode and LOVE the iPhone on screen keyboard, especially after years of it learning how I type I don't even have to look at it that much to make sure I'm hitting the correct keys because it know what general patterns I'm getting at and what words I want.

However, there's no way you can say that you type faster on the iPhone than a physical computer keyboard (obviously you can than any other phone) and there are certain advantages to having a fold out one like I had for my TX Palm Pilot that is very easy to carry around - you don't have to look at the keys at all (if you know how to type) and this is very useful for lectures or meetings in which you have to get as much information down as possible as fast as possible without wasting time looking at the keypad on the iPhone or worrying about your clicking noise (if you want any type of feedback) distracting others around you, as well as classmates/coworkers clearly assuming that you're texting and NOT paying attention to the important information being presented. It would be awesome to be able to just sit the iPhone on a FULL SIZED keyboard, or just open up a bluetooth one, and type at full speed with tactile response but without having to open up your MBP or get distracted by the other apps on your iPhone and appear to be ignoring everything going on around you. I strongly say I would buy one, especially for typing ideas I have when very tired or listening to music when my eyes are closed completely but my fingers still know how to type and get my thoughts/information down.

I would never try to edit a word document on the iPhone with the onscreen keyboard, but give me a full sized keyboard accessory and I might just leave my laptop at home.

QFT. I sometimes take notes on my laptop in class to save time, and if there was some kind of fold out full keyboard, I would buy that and documents to go or something similar in a heartbeat. Then I could leave the laptop behind more often, which would really be nice.

Nope. I might be in the minority, but I actually like the iPhones "virtual" keyboard. I'm very quick and accurate due to the predictive text. I've used my sisters phone that has a slide out keyboard for texting, and I hate it! I'm much quicker on the iPhone.

I used to have a full width docking keyboard and a pocket size folding keyboard, both with full sized keys, for various palm pilot handhelds. Very useful when I took one someplace where I wanted to type fast and had to enter much more than a few lines of text (long memos on a flight, lecture notes, etc.)

A folding keyboard and an iPhone or iPod Touch would take much less space and weight far less than even a netbook. I would buy a full size or folding keyboard again if it could connect (bluetooth profile or dock) to my iPhone.

Small keyboards, not interested. it'd waste a lot of pocket space without allowing that much more or faster text input.

one time my mother was locked out of the house and it was raining extremely hard! and she had forgotten the garage code, we change it monthly and i had just changed it and had not had the chance to let her know what it is, and i had to txt her during class. thats just one example, a very bad one but it gets my point across. i sometimes need to txt in class and there is other times i would like to be able to txt without looking down.

still to me it does not hold up. There still is not a good reason for Texting in class. You mom could of waited the entire 50 min in her car for you to get out of class. It is her fault for not having a key to the house.

As for people claiming to type 60 words a min on the iPhone I call complete BS on that. It is BS for multiple reasons. First very few people can type 60 words a min on a full side keyboard (most people around 30 wpm on a full side keyboard)

Now if you had a phone with a physical keyboard I see people type faster on that than any touch screen. feeling the keys makes typing just a lot easier to do by feel.

no.

if i wanted a physical keyboard i would have bought a phone that has one.

it would be nice to have. have you ever tried texting on the iphone in a class? its hard if you cant look at the screen cuz the teacher might catch you.

haha teachers my school might ban the iphone and ipod touch next yeah right i dont care ill still use it down with rules well atleast bans on apple products

texting isnt bad at school just put it under the table or put a book next to it and success

maybe you should stop texting in class and listen, especially when they're teaching you about punctuation. there isn't a single comma or full stop in your post.

No way! I would never buy a physical keyboard for the iPhone. After having it for three days I can honestly say I am typing really fast on it now with few mistakes. You just have to get used to it and it really is quite nice to use.

Being a teacher myself, I just love students like you with your attitude. hahaha Trust me... I know all the little tricks that students use to try and hide cell phones away from me. hahaha

There is a time and a place for using a cell phone - the classroom is not one of those places. You should be concentrating on learning in class not texting someone. There is a reason why they are banned in most classrooms - very disruptive to the learning process.

You must have a retarded English teacher then because your grammar and punctuation are atrocious.

using punctuation on a forum like this is just common sense so that people know what the hell you're talking about. it's also polite, having to read a post over and over again wondering where one sentence ends and another begins is a waste of my time.

oh and if you need to concentrate and work hard to use proper punctuation and grammar as you claimed, then you're not as good as you say you are, for most of us it's second nature.

you're the perfect "poster boy" for why you should listen in school and not use your phone in class.

it is common sense i agree with you. i just dont care to waste my time and common sense. If you read all the posts, you would understand that i only played with my iphone a lot in one class. I did this because i already learned what they were teaching. You need to pay attention in most classes and work hard. There are a select few though in which you do not have to. This is not a forum for arguing about grammar if you want to argue about grammar make your own site and forum"grammar rumors"

Back to the thread i think the keyboard would be to chunky apple is all about functionality why make an add-on although it would be a smart way for apple to generate revenue

Nope, the on screen keyboard suits me fine, can type fast anough on it. The keyboard would maybe be handy for long extensive Emails etc but i'd just do that on my Laptop....
