I was on F1 visa until recently. As far as I know, F1 students can only get part time jobs employed by his/her campus. I worked as teaching assistant and campus dining hall myself but those are definitely not enough to pay for iPhone+AT&T services heh... I had to do several other things and manage my money properly. I think I posted my initial response back on page 2.
I know, and I'm very familiar with your [former] situation. I had friends in school who were approved to work 20 hours per week; usually with jobs that allowed them to study while working. Yes, $7.00/h sucks and I was in the same boat with my on-campus job. However, he has a lot of options available to honestly obtain an iPhone (if he's responsible for the service plan, maybe he should've made a better choice). He doesn't need to steal, especially from the people who are probably footing part of the bill for his overseas education.

I love how so many people act like it's so easy to maintain a job in college.

If you're working enough in college to afford an iPhone 4 and iPad you're probably not getting the most out of your education. I couldn't even afford my textbooks or rent with an on-campus job.

No, it isn't 'easy,' but it's easily doable. I work a full-time job, take a full-time graduate courseload and have a family/mortgage/etc to boot. You do what needs to be done. It comes down to dedication and time management. The average person doesn't realize how much time they waste on a daily basis doing unimportant things.

Santa Claus didn't bring me the stuff in my sig, I paid for it. By working. While in college.

Yeah, definitely. Lying is not a good idea in this case. Lie begets more lies ;)

As I mentioned before, I got a lump sum of 6 months allowance + rent that I can use for whatever I want. If I am stupid enough to spend them all in 1 month then I am SoL heh ;)

I am not sure how the OP manages his money but I was fine back then. Granted I did stock trading and "selling" Wii on eBay  Those helps a lot

If you really want the iPhone 4 see if your parents would allow you to pay them back by doing chores/work for them for a certain amount of time.

This thread has become more about people comparing their own life situation to the opp which is pointless. Everyone's financial situation is different and so is everyone's parents, let parents decide what they want to do with their money. My parents pay for my schooling and gadgets and I respect them for it. I would never lie to my parents, they trust me. If they say no then I don't bother because they most likely have a good reason

end rant/

The truth is always the best policy. I got my iPhone 4 because I got results that my parents wanted. I basically paid for it through my hard work and effort. It's basically similar to working a job. If you work, you get paid. Once you get paid, you can spend the money you earned. If you work hard enough and get exceptional results, you might be promoted to a higher position and maybe get a pay raise. Lying is bad, why? Because when people lie, they can't stop. They have to lie again to cover up the first lie. Eventually, you spin a web of lies that you are stuck. Like Madoff and his lies.

To OP: My friends who will be entering college this fall would never do what you are considering. Heck, they'd be happy to get either. Work for what you want. Don't go via dishonest ways.

I'm a film major and business minor at USC. I'm in class 8 AM to 6 PM or even 10 PM every day, sometimes shooting or writing projects at nights and on weekends. I'm on academic scholarship and my parents support me financially, so if anyone knows how I can get a job working the maybe one or two hours I'm free each day (in which I eat, go to the gym, or study) with an hourly wage that is of any use to me (i.e. not minimum) then please let me know but I sincerely doubt it's possible for me to work and study at the same time and maintain the grades that I do.

Oh and in the summers I intern full time for production companies with no pay (usually working 8 to 8 every day). I'm paying my dues now to have the career I want later. I don't think anyone has the right to tell a student to get a job if they don't know their own personal situation.

If u cant work legally u should really consider selling drugs or your body. Benefits may not be premium but u may love your job. Best wishes in your endeavors.

Don't make the assumption that your situation is common to all college students. Yeah, in your case it seems like it would be difficult to get a job. But that is your particular situation not every college student's.

I'm not assuming anything. I was asked my school and major after I said that no one should immediately say it's feasible for every college student to work. Personally, I just don't see how it's so atrocious that some college students like myself require help from mommy and daddy. I think most do. The few friends I know that work during the semester are struggling to keep up with coursework and aren't making enough money worth sacrificing the grades.

Ok. But if you didn't have an iPhone and wanted one you would either go without or find time and a job to make it happen, no? I think that's the difference...

As a parent, I will tell you that if my son did this to me; that iPad would be the last thing I ever bought him. Appreicate what you already have!

My son wants an iPhone. And I will get him one........right after he brings me a 3.5 gpa on his first quarter report card. Doesn't get a 3.5 gpa, doesn't get an iPhone. Even tells a small lie to me about this topic.....doesn't get an iPhone.

Truthfully, I could care less if my son doesn't have a 3.5 gpa on his report card. All I care about is that he is HONEST, and works HARD. I know my son well enough to know that he'll get that 3.5.

I think you need to reevaluate what your parents have done for you in your life.......

Want an iPhone 4, sell your 3gs. Take that $, and buy an iPhone 4. Selling the 3gs doesn't cover the amount you'll need..........simple, sell more of your belongings (which your parents paid for anyway).

I got a 4.0 last quarter... and have a 3.95 average. Can you buy me something? :p

But seriously. Just sell your iPad and get an iPhone. iPads are junk anyway *puts on flame suit*

I don't think getting a job to purchase a phone is a good idea. My parents bought my iPhone for me, but I also know my academic performance determines my scholarship which alleviates their financial burden. As I continue to study hard, sure I get nice things from mommy and daddy, but I don't feel inadequate and they certainly don't think I'm abusing them. The OP's family could afford an iPad, so I'm sure eventually they'd be willing to buy an iPhone for him. He could also sell his iPad. But if his parents are so generous like mine he should not take advantage of their financial support.

School too tough to get a frickin' job? I worked from the day I was able to get a work permit. I worked 40 hours a week while going to college and I had to pay my own way. Man, the entitlement nowadays is goddamn disgusting.

You sir are what is wrong with kids today. Your parents never should have gave you everything you wanted because now you have no respect for money and obviously no respect for the people who raised you the last 18 years.

And PS... You're going to school in another goddamn country... don't you think your parents are shelling out enough money for you?

Absolutely agree with the above.

Wow I edited the last part of my story and there were already 6 posts!
Thank you for your insights! I appreciate them all. I will reconsider about my plan :)
I would totally work and get the iPhone by myself if I could, but as I mentioned, I can't because I'm not eligible to work :(

You're going to be in college. You can work. I'm a sophomore in one of the most work-intensive majors at my university and I'm not stressed at all about putting down 20 hours a week. If you want to play the game and have all the toys, you gotta make money.

Or sell your iPad.

and lying gets you absolutely nowhere.

Buying **** for yourself > wasting your parents money on pointless ****

I don't think that it is a bad thing for parents to help out their children in college. However, that doesn't mean that parents should give their kids everything they want either.

Trust me, as a parent of sophomore in college I'm well aware of the demands on a student's time. We are paying for my daughter's college as well as giving her a small allowance each month. She works on campus about 10-12 hours a week for extra spending money.

Buying **** for yourself > wasting your parents money on pointless ****

Getting a proper education > getting a job to buy pointless ****.

I don't think my iPhone is pointless, and neither do my parents otherwise they wouldn't buy it for me.

To each his own though as no one can fully predict another's financial position. I do know that I'll probably get out of college with a better job than most of the ***holes who complain about college kids wasting their parents money and I certainly won't mind helping my children through college without them needing to stress about paying for things. I'd raise them to strive in school and get high enough grades to get academic scholarships, something that is quite difficult to do when slaving at McDonalds to pay for an iPhone, don't you think?

Just because you work at school doesn't mean you have to give up studying... it's called time management, and working for what you want. But like I said, you sound like the typical stuck-up USC kid.

Yea, but I don't have the physical hours in the day to work if you tool the time to read my previous posts.

Sure you could time manage, but if you have the means why not wait until graduation and get a great job then struggle to juggle school and work just to get an iPhone. Seems pointless to me.
