Wait what’s apples role in Ai? Isn’t it just to provide an interface to OpenAI and Google? They want to charge for that??
I'm sure this would be instead of paying separately for OpenAI, or being subject to Google's Adware, even if Apple used them on the back-end. Ultimately I'd expect Apple would want to use their own AI for all of it, though.

I might pay another $10-20/month on my family Apple One subscription if it included a seriously good, search engine, or a suitable AI chat substitute that wasn't littered with junk.

incredible how readily certain customers are prepared to eat the cost of this wholesale

please, apple sir, raise my apple one by $20/month, thank you, thank you

As much as I HATE subscriptions, I would probably pay for this.

I've had one of ChatGPT, MS CoPilot and Anthropic Claude as a paid subscription at about $20/month for about a year now. I am more and more dependent on them to save time. It's like having an assistant that's not particularly skilled at a lot of things, but never tires reading drafts, re-writing things, and performing general research on a topic. Moreover, they are available 24/7. I don't rely on the outputs, but they do save me a LOT of time.

Why would you pay for something that Google and Samsung will offer for free? And Google's AI features are likely to perform better

Because it's from Apple, and our products are beautiful, elegant, powerful, gorgeous, amazing, and any other adjective our marketing team can get Tim Cook to say on-stage ... so it's clearly worth a premium price for all that!

No, I don't need AI and my wife and have been reducing our monthly subscriptions in general.

People without money or NOT accustomed to subscriptions won’t. People with money or accustomed to subscriptions, will. Apple doesn’t need to have everyone in the world paying for it to make it worth their time. Probably, only just a few hundred million.

That means BILLIONS of folks could not subscribe and Apple would still make a profit. There may be quite a few people here that are in those billions.

Apple reportedly plans to turn some Apple Intelligence features into paid subscription services, and some analysts believe the company could charge users up to $20 per month for the privilege.

Last month, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman said that while Apple Intelligence will be free to start, Apple's long-term plan is to launch something like "Apple Intelligence+," with extra features that users pay monthly fees to access, similar to iCloud+.

Speaking to CNBC, Counterpoint Research's Neil Shah said Apple could offer the features as part of a modified Apple One subscription, and he believes an additional figure of between $10 and $20 is a realistic possibility.

"Software and services makes it more lucrative for Apple to pass it on with the Apple One subscription model," Shah told CNBC in an interview last week.

Apple One costs $19.95 a month and gives users access to various Apple services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Fitness+, additional cloud storage, and more.

"Apple is one of the few connected devices companies that has successfully monetized the value-added services it offers," Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight, told CNBC.

"As a result, it has set a precedent with its users that they have to pay for more premium services. On this basis, it can't be ruled out that Apple may choose to charge for more advanced features within its Apple Intelligence offering."

Wood added that Apple Intelligence could give the company an option to launched a bundled subscription service with various services under a single price, akin to a new Apple One tier.

Apple in the June quarter saw a steep increase in services revenue at $24.2 billion, up from $21.2 billion a year ago and a new all-time revenue record. Analysts believe that making its own AI features another services revenue stream could allow Apple to compensate for the slower pace of hardware upgrades and also enable the company to pass the high cost of its investment in AI onto customers.

Apple has reportedly started building its own AI servers that use the M2 Ultra chip, and it is said to be developing its own AI server processor using TSMC's 3nm process for use as soon as 2025, which could enhance the performance of its data centers and future AI tools that rely on the cloud.

Apple is expected to spend several billion on hardware to support its artificial intelligence development in 2024, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo said he expects Apple to spend "at least" $620 million on servers in 2023 and $4.75 billion on servers in 2024.

Nop not even a bit

Wouldn't pay for it as a stand alone subscription, but I'd go for a higher apple one plan that'd introduce AI at a discount.

The point is: if you make the customer pay for AI while competitors offer it for free (and better), it’s a losing game from the start.
The sad part is some people are willing to pay for anything that keeps their body and mind from having to do any work. Did you ever see the movie Wall-E? That’s where humans are headed because of this AI craze; stupid, out of shape and unable to do anything for themselves.

Only if Apple Intelligence will sync iCloud Mail notification badges between iOS and macOS.

Seriously, they are asking for mockery with this name unless they finally also fix a lot of little dumb bugs that hang around.

A little more on topic, lots of people already pay $20 per month for ChatGPT. That’s probably why they’re targeting $20, seems to be the going rate.

As poor of a value as Apple One is for most people, I would hope they would at least roll it into that at no extra charge. But now I’m just talking crazy.

I don’t see any reason for AI in my life, but I’m sure tons of people will. Apple will charge for some higher end services for sure. There is huge growth potential in AI due to its interesting novelty and productive nature.

I would never pay for a service that's mostly relabeled ChatGPT, i.e. based on stolen content, delivering services I can use today with almost the same seamless integration by voice and linking an extended version of Federico Viticci's S-GPT Shortcut¹ to double tapping on my iPhone's back. With heavy use this solution generates costs between $0.9 to $1.5. If you take into account, that you need to buy a new device for no reasons but Apple claiming some hardware magic going on that ran in the cloud for decades, any price is pure rip off.

¹ If you're interested in my extensions, for now internationalization, feel free to contact me.

BIG NO. Already paying for Apple One. Not paying any more. At some point I might just move to a dumb phone and call it a day :). Subscription Overload.

It's going to take basically a miracle to make a headless phone useful. Until AI can perfectly transcribe human speech, it will never work. Right now, my iPhone gets dictation wrong about 50% of the time. If you make people pay for something that doesn't work 50% of the time, you're only going to piss people off. Just look at Humane AI. People are returning them faster than they are being sold.
