Some of these comments make me think that I must be looking at a different version of iOS6 maps.

At first glance it's gorgeous and makes Google Maps look old school. It presents no problems doing the things I used to use Google Maps for 99% of the time. It's becoming more information rich almost daily. Streetview is something I use, yes, but sometimes only once in a few months. I think the satellite imagery looks significantly better than Google's.

I assume that all those acquisitions Apple made in cutting-edge mapping companies will feed through into something designed to kick Google's ass, not merely be a 'just about passable' facsimile.

Here's the kicker:

Most people won't care. The only features most people care about are new, useful ones. I've seen people here rant about how iOS5 had over 200 new features, but if they're catching-up to features on competing handsets, or logical features that maybe should have already existed (Here's to you copy and paste), then people won't notice it.

Google Maps was perfectly functional. I fully understand why Apple are going down the route of making their own solution, but for the average consumer, only new, useful, incremental features count.

as you all continue to rant n rave..

does no one see how backward google map on iOS is? than on Android? And why?

Instead of saying it is a disaster, why not be a bit smart and use a bit of brain cells and figure what would happen if Apple didn't venture this on its own.

Finally, someone with logic.

People who are whining needs to realize that google will almost certainly release a google maps app on the app store.

BTW, calling apple maps a disaster is an exaggeration; most of my friends on iOS 6 said they prefer apple maps over google's.

They'd buy out the developers of a good GPS app, rebrand it and call it innovation?

Biggest problem I've found with the new maps is it's ability to search misspelled locations where google maps would give a suggestion and find it. Or at least throw a bunch of possibilities and kinda get what your asking. Apple's maps seems like you need the EXACT name and location or it's "not found." I hope they add some search algorithms which can be very complicated im sure.

Who had a good GPS app Apple bought?

They've been developing this 3D mapping app with technologies from poly9 and (can't remember the name) for over two years now. They didn't just buy, slap on the apple logo and call it a day.

LOL Apple developed Maps on iOS, NOT Google. Google Maps on iOS just uses Google's map data - the app was written and is maintained by Apple. Google Maps is better on Android because Google has better engineers. There's a reason Chrome for iOS is better than Safari for iOS too. ;)

The reason Apple Maps sucks compared to Google Maps on iOS is because Google's backend is simply better than Apple's. ;)

Apple isn't just shooting itself in the foot with iOS 6, it's shooting itself in the head. ;)

Yes, they did. But there's only so much that can improved if Google controls it, be it - providing the necessary API, etc.

To each their own, there can be endless debate which internet navigation tool is better. What makes one think it is better? Usually the one that can attract the highest number of users - wins.
The last time I read, Safari on iOS still commands the highest internet viewership on mobile. And by the way, if I remember correctly, (microsoft) internet explorer still commands the highest percentage in the states.

I don't see why the big debate about the native maps. The average person won't know or care as long as they find where they are going. Last time I looked Google great map didn't have text to speech turn by turn which made it necessary fo me to purchase Navigon. I live in a province whereby it is illegal to be handling my phone while driving. I think most of the people complaining on here are the idiots who are not developers but paid money for a beta software which will be free when it is ready. REMEMBER PEOPLE BETA OS IS FOR TESTING YOUR APPS.

What sort of text to speech are you talking about? Obviously Google Navigation provides speech turn by turn. In fact it has a great one (at least when comparing to the likes of Garmin).

In this case they didn't buy out anyone to puchase a finished solution a la Siri (Although as you've stated, they have bought multiple firms with finished products or solutions to create the app, such as Placebase, Poly9 and C3), however have partnered with and will heavily rely upon some pretty big names (TomTom, Waze) in order to put out an Apple branded app.

But I digress. My real point was meant to be that innovation is only good if it benefits an end user in a tangible way. Moving from a Google branded app to an Apple branded one marginally improves the user experience for iPhone users, but if they cared much about a map app, they'd know that Android has had the key features for yonks

Since what version of IO/S ? I have had every iphone and have not seen speech turn by turn on the native Google map.

At the end of the day doesn't really matter what we moan or compare apples with bananas, the next iOS and next iPhone will have the new maps, apple is cutting google out of their iOS slowly but surely that just leaves search. So it's going to be either love it or hate it, or go apple or bananas. Since google privacy issues and users privacy control I delete chrome browser off all my devices and don't use google as my default home page/ search anymore. So it's just user preference at the end of the day. Safari doesn't runs well on windows so I guess it's the same principle there, use another browser or get myself a mac pc.

Ps. The apple maps for just betas work it's really solid so I guess it will be matured and much better in more months to come. The 3D textures and details beat google own already.

Um, no

Also, it took google long enough to get their android maps app anywhere near Apple's iOS version.

I'd agree to this but it's only applying to the people who are posting on this forum and browse this site. That demographic is such a small %. I'd never base the average iPhone user among the users on this site.

Apple just added my city onto satalite imagery. I'm happy now. Then again, I already know the bus schedule well enough.

Um, yes. The only thing holding it back is Javascript execution due to Apple's retardedly backwards policies. ;) Chrome on Android is certainly much better than Safari on iOS. Google Now is also smarter than Siri. Etc.

Android got free turn-by-turn with the release of the Motorola Droid… in 2009. Almost three years ago. iOS still doesn't have it. iOS came into the market over a year ahead of Android and it took just a year for Google Maps on Android to get major features that iOS Google Maps lacked.

Well, you're just wrong. IE only dominated in the desktop space because of Microsoft's bundling practices. The Android browser is dominating now. ;)

Google's directions API is more than enough to build a turn-by-turn app when combined with GPS, yet Apple has failed to put two and two together and combine GPS with the Maps API and couldn't be arsed to create one until now. It won't even work on older iOS devices, which forces people to upgrade to Apple's new iDevices - I think a lot of people just won't bother and will just buy an Android phone instead ;)

haha, that's funny.
The reason apple maps sucked was because google refused to provide more map data unless apple allows them to obtain more private information from iOS users.
If google's engineers are so amazing, please tell me why it took them 5 iterations of android to workaround the lag.

You are a classic example of a google wh0re.

In the north of England it plain doesn't work correctly. Black a white ariel photos everywhere and the search feature is no where near as useful as google search.
For example, I type in cark airfield and get something 5 miles away from it. York, North Yorkshire is in black and white. And my hometown of morecambe is just one big pixel.

And there's also a word known as 'beta'
