I’m glad they kept it. Bezel-free displays are distracting for people who actually work and not dream of “what could be.”

While I do think the color choices for the new iMac are embarrassing I will agree that bezel-free displays are not all that they are cracked up to be. If you look at pro grade monitors they tend to have thick bezels and I recently picked up a HP Dream Color monitor and its all black with really thick bezels and I have to say I love it. It actually sucks you more into the display and this is coming from someone a 5k iMac.

I still don’t see how this couldn’t satisfy professional offices? Computer works just fine for zoom, excel, and maybe running Citrix. I’m a software dev and this would be perfect for me with my meetings and Citrix.
It probably could. But a lot of people were moaning that the colours are kiddish. But I always thought that the function is better than aesthetics. Like all those server towered look ugly and way uglier. And next, I thought all this modern stuff is what makes offices look like for the 21sts century rather than ancient times.

Personally, I don’t mind the chin - I like the squared off edges that are being implemented across the product lineup.

Those colors though... I knew that they were going to be colorful, but I was really hoping that there would be a black option. Or at least a silver without the white bezel...

Performance, cameras, and sound seem like a solid upgrade though! Should be a great desktop...

Why is Apple thinking that everyone wants to have these crazy colors all over the place?
OMG....those colors are just hideous! A chimp with random picks on a color palette could have done better. He would have too...he couldn’t do worse:)

Generally I think this forum is too negative, but that bezel is undeniably atrocious... Cannot believe they did it that way instead of just making the computer a tiny bit thicker. The iPad Pro-style renders look amazing, and that was completely achievable. Really hoping that the 32 inch model doesn't suffer the same fate.

On a positive note, I still think people are going to really enjoy the computer. It's very nice aside from the chin.

Not a ton of taste when it comes to colors on these forums. These will fly off the shelves. It’s been a long wait to get some colorful iMacs again, but I’m glad they decided to take the plunge. If Apple took the advice of the negative posters on this forum, they wouldn’t be a 2 trillion dollar company today.

Minimum requirement for Big Sur is 4GB RAM - that's just for the OS.

That leaves 4GB RAM free for running Apps.

It doesn't matter whether you're just a consumer or not, it's not enough.

I'm sitting here typing this response with nothing but Safari, iTunes and Activity Monitor open and am using 11GB of RAM (see attached). So all that will happen is the new iMacs will use the SSD as a swap file much more often, which will reduce the life of the SSD too. Not great in a machine where the SSD isn't replaceable.

And that's just as it is now. In the future it’s likely Mac OS will require more RAM too.

Try and spin it anyway you want, it's a cynical decision by Apple to ship an entry level iMac with half the storage of an iMac from 12 years ago and with only 4GB more RAM. 8GB RAM has been default of the entry level iMac since 2012 - that's 9 years without an increase to RAM.

Consumer or not, it's pitiful. If 500GB was needed in 2009 - it should be double that as standard by now.

As for a $1trillion company not getting it wrong...Cube, Trashcan Mac Pro, Ping, antenna on iPhone 4, HomePod, butterfly keyboards, graphics cards in 2011 MacBook Pros and many more - they've been wrong plenty of times.

The amount of storage that comes as default with this iMac is less than I have on my phone for heavens sake - and my phone is 3 years old. 256GB storage on a £1250 desktop computer in 2021 is shameful.

No, they'd probably be a 3 or 4 trillion dollar company! :)

So it's basically a Mac Mini with a built in 4.5k display, camera, mics & audio. The fact that it comes in colors seems like a clear indicator that it's entry-level iMac. Perhaps this fall we'll see the 32" pro version come with the M1X or M2 chip instead. Hopefully that chip will support more RAM, GPUs, and ports. And probably only come in black and silver. By then maybe Adobe will have their entire suite optimized for Apple silicon too.

white border:

shocking, but is it so horrendous?

white border + chin:

shocking, and now horrendous.

side headset jack: very good, why cant we just put all the ports on the side?
colors: whatever, I dont really care
10lbs: ok, ppl realize this is a meme and apple will save a TON of money shipping it to you, but of course, there's no chance you'll see the complementary cost reduction.
display: IMO this is where I was most disappointed. Sure mini-LED was a long shot, but I did expect some kind of upgrade. I dont think we really got one here but for 99.95% of people they shouldn't really care.

specs:
shockingly disappointing.

no m1x means the GPU side is horrific and there is no chance that once games catch up and start deploying on arm (I mean desktop games) in 2-3 years that this iMac will be able to do anything with them. It's a hard pass for me and probably even the m1x. You'll have to pay through the nose on apple tax to get a 32core GPU that is in "rough" terms on the same level of performance to a midrange desktop gpu that can power games. If you have any thoughts of gaming u can hard pass this iMac and quite frankly any other iMac for the next 2 years minimum. BC the way apple is structuring the product stack, a 32core m1 GPU will probably cost 4k MINIMUM. at which point u can buy what's effectively a top-line gaming desktop twice over or, a 4x ps5s and a 65" oled

The display on the Mac this replaces was 21", so this is an upgrade. That said, I would not buy this iMac, I would rather have an M1 mini with a LG 24" Ultrafine monitor attached.

I’m sorry, why are people whining about a white border? Short memories? I think this iMac sold pretty darn well with a much larger white border:

This display (on paper) looks to be way better than the LG. I obviously haven’t seen one in person, but on the specs alone, you’re picking an inferior display.

I too hate the chin. I have no idea why Apple decided to keep it. I guess if they did get rid of the chin that would make it look too much like the oversized iPad it really is.

I do like the colors.

Too bad the iMac is not for me. I had one and is now sitting in the closet. The computer is outdated now, but the screen is still beautiful which is a waste.

Haha! Brilliant, got to love the immediate criticism. “Apple are announcing something...pass my keyboard, I need to complain...”

What I liked the most is TouchID on the keyboard (lol), I wonder if those you can purchase those separate and have them work with other Macs with the T chip
While I like that there is finally touch ID, I would prefer it to be integrated somewhere in the iMac itself. That way, I can use a 3rd party keyboard like a mechanical one without a sacrifice of missing a touch ID. It would have been nice to integrate it with the power button at least.

I can see how the pricing was arrived at - the Mac Mini is £699 so with the iMac at £1,249, that's £550 to add the iMac's monitor, speakers, webcam and keyboard (but also minus the Mac Mini's USB-A ports, Ethernet and HDMI video-out). That seems... ok?

But then you step back and it's still £1,249 for a very basic spec - 16/512 seems like it should be the baseline at this price.

That design... not my cup of tea at all and I hope it's better in the metal than on the screen. I flicked through the colour options and none of the fronts were to my taste. Kind of weird not to go a bit thicker to tidy up the design. And no height adjustment - is that basic feature really going to be reserved for a ridiculously expensive monitor stand?

I feel M1 is OK but it's a bit disappointing we still haven't seen what Apple has planned for the next generation and desktop focused CPUs.

Perhaps not truly disappointing, but it felt like the bare minimum.

Where is the card slot for media, where is the port for a set of headphones, where's the port for a external mic, where's a lot of things that this iMac should have. I get that they have the four USB ports but why leave these other ways to connect useful devices to this new iMac? Also, what the hell were they thinking when they say you max out at 564 Gigs of storage and 8 Gigs of RAM. You can get an iPad Pro with 2TBs of storage. This makes no sense. My 2011 27 inch iMac just died and it had a 2TB SSD and a 3 TB SATA drive soI was so hoping they would come out with the larger display M1 iMac with 8 TBs and who knows how much RAM because it's been 10 years since I purchased my iMac. So even if I didn't get the big one today I was at least hoping for a 24 inch that still had the ability to hold a bigger than 4TB SSD and possibly a second SSD and at least 16 gigs of RAM but no. This was very underwhelming if you ask me.

What Mac in the last decade has had a port for an external mic…?

As for the headphone Jack, it’s on the side.

You can get up to 2TB of storage on the iMac.

This is the consumer model iMac. You’re going to have to wait a bit for the higher-end models.

I think the card reader omission is due to the thin screen. If they did have one, it would have to be on the side probably.
