The chin without logo is just... it's not aesthetically balanced IMO. A lot of empty plain space. Even if they just engraved the Apple logo, it would look much better.

The white bezels probably look better in combination with the colors... I still prefer black bezels. Made two quick mockups.

Apple logo: I agree, but still everybody will know it's an iMac even without it. The chin-design is iconic enough already. That's how well known the Apple brand is by now, same with iPhone. My first reaction was "Post-it" notes → https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/wow-disappointing.2292333/post-29790299

White bezels: What's the wall color of the room you would put the iMac in? I guess it's white for more than 80% of the people and that way it blends in better withe the background when it's on. Your mockup shows it quite well! It also looks more friendly imo.
It does look strange when it's off though, but I guess everything has up- and downsides 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am getting one to replace my 2019 21.5" iMac.
Will be first in line to pre-order the 24" iMac.

Reason: M1

M1 runs circles around any Intel iMac plus I hate the spinning HDD in my iMac.
Beach balls all day...

The M1 and Unified RAM runs circles over the 16GB, 32GB Intel machines by a long shot!

And I sold all my Intel Mac Mini, Macbook Pro and Airs and got only M1.
Yes people forget that integrated graphics on Intel requires extra RAM to copy the data. There is a way around this on Intel, but its a programming change and not all programming has this. With M1, the GPU has access to any and all of the 16GB of RAM.

Gaming - Apple, you’re better off not mentioning gaming, ever. You’ll never gain clout with the pcmr crowd, console gamers are gonna buy a console, mobile gamers have the iPhone and iPad. You can’t win.
This kind of thing irritates me. There are more to games than the Cyberpunk 2077 or Crysis world. Some of my favorite games can be run on a potato. So yes, this can actually play games very well

This continues to plague Apple

They love to solve problems nobody has… And in the process create new ones
Actually my parents only have a little side area in the kitchen for their computer. Height and width wise, there is more space, but it doesn't have a lot of space depth wise. The current iMac they have now get a bit too far for them. So I am actually liking that they dropped the thickness so my parents have more room.

No, not really.

For those that have never seen the inside of an iMac or iPad Pro, look below. For the iMac, the motherboard, disk drive, power supply, fan, and speakers are all behind the display. All the chin does is provide alignment for the display glass. On the iPad, you have 4 speakers, one in each corner, two battery cells on either side, and the motherboard is the skinny piece in the middle. By the way, the iPad shown is the 11", which now has an M1 chip, and is 5.9 mm thick, compared to the M1 iMac at 11.5 mm. My 2020 MacBook Air is 16.1 mm at it's thickest, and that includes a keyboard between the mainboard, fan, and display.
As stated before, this compounds heat. The screen itself gives off its own heat, so putting stuff behind it adds to the heat on top of the heat those components themselves needs to output. Therefore, moving it further away from the screen will fix that issue.

I attached a picture of a 2017 iMac that shows what the inside looks like. All the main components are behind the LCD, just like they are in the iPad and most other AIO computers out there.
And the iMacs have a heating problem. My 2019 i9 iMac fans get SO LOUD even doing small tasks. The i9 is very hot, and it shows the cooling system on the iMac is not up to the task on these ultra high end processors. And part of that is the heat from the screen itself being RIGHT UP against the components.

I actually HATE my iMac JUST because of the fan noise.

I agree with this too, almost all of my favorite games on PC are old ones. I loathe most new games in fact and consider self-described “gamers” to be idiots that spend money on unfinished games riddled with microtansactions.

I’ve said it before in another thread, the most popular games on steam are more than 5 years old, some 10 and over. Jerking off over specs is stupid when the games you do play run on hardware nearly a decade old.

I am aghast at this design. Jonny Ive is puking in his mouth at the look of this pandering underpowered skittle. No wonder they don't prominently have the apple logo on it. Hoping they come up with something much better for a larger iMac and of course the pro. To me, they just turned off a LOT of loyal apple desktop users.

Yes the Touch ID keyboard is what I liked the most. Wished it came in Space Grey though like my current Magic Keyboard.
Can you imagine the BIG thing people are talking about is that a $1500 skittle that looks like a cardboard IKEA faux computer has touch ID in the keyboard? Steve Jobs would be taking a flamethrower to Tim Cook's office right about now.

I really like the new iMac. I am by no means a fanboy and have criticised many of Apple’s designs over the years. I couldn’t stand the black glass big border look. The 2008 MBP compared to its predecessor was an abomination to me until the retina came out and mitigated some of the nasty bits.

This reminds me of the G4 iMac (and obviously the G3). It’s fun! Just how an iMac should be.

I wrote this on another thread. but just to share..

I think a colored tempered glass with BLACK color bezel with silver apple logo on the bottom center. there should also be a separator between the chin and the bottom bezel and just like previous iMac, make it of different color so that it doesn't look like one huge dangling chin. we can just hope tempered glass manufacturers make it.

this one is for the iphone, but you get the idea.

well at least people who are actually considering to buy this don't have to wait for the larger pro iMac with black bezel cause for most non power hungry users the new iMac is good enough.

Here it is. Black Bezel TEMPERED GLASS FOR NEW iMac 2021.

Agree - the Intel iMacs have been the slowest, hottest, fan spinning, beach ball bouncing Mac with the terrible spinning hard drives since my 2012 and currently my 2019 which still has the spinning HDD....

Can wait - 7 days to pre-order a blue M1 iMac !

I agree. I am getting into a brand new series so I am playing Trails in the Sky. I am an RPG fan, I love stories. Some of my favorite games are also Satisfactory, Factorio, Terraria and Stardew Valley. Three of those can be played on the Macbook Air M1. Satisfactory is only on Windows.

You're complaining about a product that you aren't even the target market for. The average consumer will do just fine with 8GB of RAM. Crazy, right? You clearly aren't a home user...

No wonder. Wait for the bigger iMac that'll actually be targeted at you.

The average person does not need an AMD Threadripper 3980X... 😂

You guys crack me up.

Quite confident you are...
Oh yes, I'm quite confident. I buy computers on a 5 year cycle(or more). 8Gb RAM isn't enough for 2021. Period. 16Gb RAM will be questionable 5 years from now. It's how things work. People don't replace their computers like they do with iPhones. I know I don't..

Okay I think I’ve collected some thoughts on this:

1. Design
Gets a thumbs up from me overall, but imo, it’s not perfect.
Thinness - I think we’re at the point where we’re getting diminishing returns from making devices thinner. Just adding a little thickness to it to keep the rj45 and headphone jacks mounted on the back would have (maybe?) been preferable. Likewise not needing an external power brick.

White bezels - doesn’t bother me at all on the color variants, since the white meshes better with the pastel colors. On the silver one I think a black bezel would’ve been better though.

Having bezels - for petes sake just shut up people.

Chin - I like the iMac chin in general, although I think an Apple Logo matched to the back color would be nicer looking.

Magnetic cable and power brick - did anyone really have trouble plugging in the old cables? I think they changed it to keep the Mac thin. And for ethernet, depending on how it works if there’s potential for a dock-style brick that’d actually be pretty cool.

Headphone jack location - I think if they had to keep it edgewise, then it should have been on the bottom on the right side. Better aesthetics that way and the majority of people are right handed.

Ports - doesn’t bother me in the least that it’s usb-c only. An SD card reader would be nice though, c’mon Apple throw us a bone here. And Hdmi too, most monitors have it still and it’s not going away. As much as you thumped media consumption the least you could do is let us connect it to a nice television.

Cpu - although I expected an m1x or more powerful variant to be introduced, the PC parts situation is so ****ed up the iMac makes a compelling case by virtue of having the best integrated graphics. For a clearly entry level machine, it’s good.

Gaming - Apple, you’re better off not mentioning gaming, ever. You’ll never gain clout with the pcmr crowd, console gamers are gonna buy a console, mobile gamers have the iPhone and iPad. You can’t win.

RAM situation - lower your prices already. Though the complaining is overblown due to how quick the machines are even with less memory than their x86 counterparts.

My favorite thing about these new iMacs is the return to “fun” design. Yeah they don’t look as stodgy and uptight as before, but that’s a good thing. The iMac originally had a sense of whimsy and fun, it was supposed to be a friendly, approachable computer for people otherwise averse to computers. Hell since the original Mac the logo has been a friggin smiley face.

Seriously? This is 2021 not 1995. If that is what Apple wants to do then their markietng dept. needs to get a grip. GenX, Millenials, Gen Z are their target market. And that group grew up using a computer. Not to mention internet use(Millenials; GenZ).

Am I completely, 100% in love with this new iMac design? No.

Still, I’m glad all of the amateur industrial designers and engineers on this forum don’t work for Apple. Zero imagination.

I’d rather there’s a company out here offering alternatives/pushing the design envelope one way or another instead of just going straight ahead with a “let’s just make another space grey chinless rectangle.”
Because folks are looking at their screen rather than looking at the external components. Which is why black bezels are so nice. Hello?

You're clearly not an "average consumer" by any means, so you obviously need 16GB of RAM for your very important pro applications. ;)
