Apple is so focused on making everything thinner and the iMac is a great example of something that doesn't need to be this thin. Lighter is great but comes naturally with removing old parts and cough cough, a power brick.Having worked in the Apple Stores as a Technician, this would not work right now.
#1: a screen that takes up the entire device, in this case, would lead to a much larger casing in back. This would defeat the purpose of what Apple has done with the iMac for some time now: having a thinner over all computer
#2: Without the "chin", you lose access to space for the system board, the larger speakers that are befitting the iMac, and the cooling fans. The fans are the most important part in this case due to heat dissipation for both the logic board and the display. A display this large would generate a pretty significant amount of heat within the casing. Especially when you consider that the logic board would also have a better integrated graphics chip than the MacBook Pros currently.
MacOS is still a much more powerful OS than iPadOS is. The inevitable direction would be to create an iPad that could run MacOS or a unified OS, but it does still require more power overall. With the requirements for, again, heat dissipation, higher graphics processing, etc., this design would not, currently, work as an iMac.
Now...as an external display to replace the old Thunderbolt displays... 🤔
Personally, I don’t mind the chin - I like the squared off edges that are being implemented across the product lineup.
Those colors though... I knew that they were going to be colorful, but I was really hoping that there would be a black option. Or at least a silver without the white bezel...
Performance, cameras, and sound seem like a solid upgrade though! Should be a great desktop...
Why is Apple thinking that everyone wants to have these crazy colors all over the place?
I don’t mind the colors actually. What I find horrible is the white bezels. Black bezels look super slick. White bezels look outdated af.Personally, I don’t mind the chin - I like the squared off edges that are being implemented across the product lineup.

I'm sure we'll see Space Grey in the 27" version.Yes the Touch ID keyboard is what I liked the most. Wished it came in Space Grey though like my current Magic Keyboard.
will the touch ID keyboard work with the M1 Mac Mini?Yes the Touch ID keyboard is what I liked the most. Wished it came in Space Grey though like my current Magic Keyboard.
Everybody said it would be a giant iPad with small bezels. Now it still has that nasty big chin sans the Apple logo. WTF
What a disappointment and lost opportunity to create a beautiful iMac.
This is so ugly.
Apple is missing Johnny IveI get the "fun-factor" of the colors, but it really looks like one of those IKEA "dummy-units" they put on every desk. Horrible design if you ask me.
WWDC is going to bring the non-entry level devices...This announcement confirmed I am not getting rid of my 2019 27" iMac anytime soon. Might also stick with Catalina for a few more months.
Apple will have to figure out a better way to delineate M1/SOC between all their product lines at some point if they're all going to be named exactly the same. At least Intel chips had an i3/i5/i7/i9 naming mechanism to somewhat navigate the entry/good/better/best path.
No, no no more fans behind the display...thank god the fans are now into the chinspeakers and fans behind the display would make a hellofua lot more sense for both design and practicality.
Why? Seems like design like the XDR means you can't hear the fan since its blocked by the hunk of glass facing you.No, no no more fans behind the display...thank god the fans are now into the chin
I work in an office with dozens of iMacs that face the wall and losing that front facing Apple logo will be a change like taking a painting off the wall and leaving the obvious space blank. What I think a lot of people aren’t recognising is that the chin on the iMac is actually part of it’s image. It’s a recognisable face, and has become an iconic part of its design and is no longer limited by technical limits. It makes the product recognisable from the front - even without the Apple branding.
That’s a strong product image.
Eh, USB-A sucks anyways.Seriously? No USB-A ports? And it's still priced at $1299? I was hoping for something cheaper. And now you can't even upgrade RAM.
Assuming port limitations are for the same reason as the iPhone, not enough space. So why slim it down? It's not a portable!Seriously? No USB-A ports? And it's still priced at $1299? I was hoping for something cheaper. And now you can't even upgrade RAM.
Actually I like it too. My only gripe is, why the removed the Apple logo?I think it looks amazing. To each his own.
But so incredibly common still. Apple has tried to force USB C but there's so many accessories that still, years later, are only available for USB A, meaning us, the user, has to decide to use a different device or have a freaking adapter.Eh, USB-A sucks anyways.
