Having worked in the Apple Stores as a Technician, this would not work right now.

#1: a screen that takes up the entire device, in this case, would lead to a much larger casing in back. This would defeat the purpose of what Apple has done with the iMac for some time now: having a thinner over all computer

#2: Without the "chin", you lose access to space for the system board, the larger speakers that are befitting the iMac, and the cooling fans. The fans are the most important part in this case due to heat dissipation for both the logic board and the display. A display this large would generate a pretty significant amount of heat within the casing. Especially when you consider that the logic board would also have a better integrated graphics chip than the MacBook Pros currently.

MacOS is still a much more powerful OS than iPadOS is. The inevitable direction would be to create an iPad that could run MacOS or a unified OS, but it does still require more power overall. With the requirements for, again, heat dissipation, higher graphics processing, etc., this design would not, currently, work as an iMac.

Now...as an external display to replace the old Thunderbolt displays... 🤔
Would love that look for an external display. I’m still using my old Cinema display and it’s still gorgeous.

Do you think we would be able to connect a Macbook Pro to it and uses it as an external display as well?

I work in an office with dozens of iMacs that face the wall and losing that front facing Apple logo will be a change like taking a painting off the wall and leaving the obvious space blank.
Yet, everyone will know it’s an iMac. Even without a visible iconic macOS dock on screen, it’s an instantly recognisable design. How many other computers or monitors hold such a claim?

iPhones and iPads have never featured forward facing branding.

Why the two tone colour options , the rear looks nice but the frontal colours are not doing it for me . I would have loved the navy blue on the chin & thin bezel.

Clearly they ‘ve copied their AirPod Max colour combo! I need to see this first hand

i think underwhelming is a better word.
no 120hz display. maybe saved for m1x and 30" bigger model?

clearly a good display for cloud based gaming, like geforce now or xcloud, esp. with gamepad support.
now waiting for windows on arm.

this model won't make me ditch my gaming PC, still have to live with hackintosh DYI crap.
when is Apple going to finally get it that in order to eat away PC market share, they need to address gaming?

Don't really mind the white bezels, will get used to it. What bothers me is Apple's obsession with thin products resulting in that stupid chin and an external power supply and ethernet through the external power supply?

This is supposed to be a desktop, not a laptop, the power supply and all ports should be integrated. I don't care if it's 11mm or 15mm in thickness, I'm not going to carry it around.

The front-facing camera is a distraction due to the white bezels.

Welcome to the world of Apple! Buy a PC if you don't want to deal with all of those things. ;)

Disappointing indeed. No color options that appeal to me, removal of legacy ports, and the same ol’ 256 GB SSD / 8 GB RAM for $1300. I’ve long wanted a new iMac but will pass on these.

edit: looks like you can get USB3 ports for $200. Smdh.
Let USB-A die already. It’s an inferior and outdated port type.

I wish they kept the Apple logo on the chin, this looks like the fake computers they use in stores like IKEA or a TV show set where they have to block out any logo.
That’s funny. It absolutely does look like an IKEA catalogue computer.

I’m still really happy with it though.

Need a Mac for Xcode, was not going to purchase this one anyway (need higher-tier model and don't immediately need a replacement for any of my current Macs). Just hoping this bad design choice won't make it's way into the 27" high-end replacement.

Meanwhile... Mouse charging in 2021+ according to Apple has not changed

This is why I’m still using the original with 2 AA batteries.

I was wondering how long it would take for the first person to start complaining about it. If I'm not mistaken it didn't even take five minutes from the unveiling to the first complainypants thread about how the completely made-up imaginary renders created by people with what can only be described as too much free time and the imaginative powers of a 2-year old are so much better and how what Apple has created is utter garbage.

Nice!

AA batteries are cheap and you don't have to wait for them to charge. Just plop them in and done. Order straight from Amazon!
The electricity from my mains is cheaper, while also avoiding the need for external storage of batteries. Yes, a small problem. But people make a mountain out of a molehill with the second generation models. The reality is, it’s charging design will impact you in virtually the least possible way.

Way better than the constant waste of churning batteries. Anyway, back to people mumping that the iMac doesn’t just look like a low-cost generic monitor... 🤣

Why didn't  use the stand to store the logic board?
since they are thin and compact
the display port and speakers could latch into the monitor mount with a pin connector something.
this way when the iMac needs repairs or replacement,
the stand can be easily removed and even bicycled to the near by  store.

Still no wi-fi 6e / 6ghz in the new iMacs. Old wi-fi 6 only.

Pretty boring iMac release. No new cpu yet, no wi-fi 6, pretty bad baseline specs (8gb/256gb).
 design computers for mainly those who have no idea what what you are typing about.
just look at those pretty iMac colours!
