The chin is one thing. The colors though . . . And separate colors on the same front-facing side of the device. Yuck.

I was already planning on getting a new M1 Mini to pair with my iPad Pro...this cinches the deal.
I have a 2015 27 inch iMac. I was hoping today gave me a reason to consider a replacement with a newer iMac, but; the new iMac is an iPad Pro permanently mounted on a stand. This is not just a physical design choice: the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 on the new iPad Pro is the indication that the product lines will merge.

I am not even sure I want the Mini based on the clear direction things are going. I am seriously considering an Intel NUC with Linux.

Over 4K

It’s also the replacement for the 21.5”, not the 27”. Don’t jump the gun just yet Horatio.
I have used a Mac since the mid 90's with a Quadra 840 AV (bought used). My absolute favorite machine was a PowerMac 8600.

The 27 inches machine will almost certainly be a true, pro-level machine: not my need. I would also rather have 4k@120 vs 5 or 6k@60.

I have no doubt that the new iMac is going to be perfect for a certain group. I was once part of that group, but I am not sure that I am any more.

I guess I'll have to buy the old version. I can't believe I'm actually saying this.

Was also hoping new big iPad would be thinner/lighter. But I keep waiting for the Watch to get thinner too. It'll probably be 1/2" next time

Was the iMac ever for you? The original G3’s were nothing on the 8600, much like the comparison you are attempting to draw now. Apple are in a shift of product strats and it shows, but really as a veteran of Apple computers you will know by now that expectations have to change.

I am just going to stick with the M! Mac Mini with 16GB Ram. It is good enough for me, works great with my 34" monitor (in black). Happy to be happy with that as a setup. Will see what is available in another year.
I think youre right. Mac mini is the play. Same specs with more ports for almost half the price. Been dying to upgrae my 2009 imac

I have to say I was kinda dreading this announcement given that 6 months ago I bought the 2020 27" iMac. I knew the new M1's were coming and I was terrified I was going to regret getting the last intel model. Now I know they haven't announced the new m1 27"/32" iMac/iMac Pro but I'm not regretting my decision now... Feel relieved. The color scheme is Meh.... but the lack of ports, the weird power cord situation, the two-tone front all left me underwhelmed...

Now in the fall when the new 27/32" inch comes out... that could be a problem.

We should all have one minute silence. Today Apple told us it is departing the computer business and is, instead, leaving us with a family of iPad's. The new iMac's are too weak; RAM far too small (8GB), SSD far too small (512GB), number of cores too few. Where is the option for 64GB or 128GB RAM, for 2TB SSD, for 16+ cores? When the 27 inch Intel iMac is withdrawn, which no doubt it will be a couple of months, Apple will leave behind an even bigger iPad as a tombstone to their once impressive computer line. How much longer before even the Mac Pro is withdrawn as the transition to Apple silicon completes and in its place Apple will leave behind an iPad with a 72 inch screen and a kit of shiny wheels to help move it around.

Please tell me I am wrong. Please tell we will be super impressed by the specs of the new computers yet to be revealed.

Update. Since posting this comment it has been pointed out, correctly, that there is an option for a factory configurable 1TB or 2TB SSD option and RAM can be factory upgraded to a max of 16GB. A small glimmer of hope but despite its coat of many colours this latest iMac is not going to create product envy. It is not the machine for serious computational or creative work. Perhaps Apple has lost interest in that segment and instead seeks to provide gateway devices to its profitable ecosystem and for that these new iMac's are ideal. We are yet to hear anything about the bigger iMac (if there is one) or the Mac Pro but if the cost barrier to performance is too high even a new gorgeous colour isn't going to help.

These iMacs are geared for those who like and prefer flowers next to their computers instead of speakers, efficient port or hub or a headphone amp-port. there are designed for those who need a computer that matches their fancy iPad cover and iphone as their graphics depicts on the  website today. this is not a derogatory comment, just a observation on this particular computer many other PC manufactures are not designing, which s good original step for .

I was waiting for this iMac, hoping to make a decision between it and the Mac M1 Mini. After checking the specs of the 24 inc iMac, I am now waiting for the 32 inch iMac, hoping it will be better than the Mac mini. For now, waiting. Depending on the " other " yet to be released iMac, and the Mac M1 Mini, one of them will be my next desktop.

You are wrong. We will be super impressed.

Hold your horses until they launch the big boy chip.

It was cool to include the colors but the fact they lightened each color with the front and keyboard + the white bezel just doesn't look right. I know it gives it a subtle version of the color to maybe not be distracting for work/play but I felt it would have been more vibrant and acceptable (maybe?). Seems like most people have their monitor set up against a wall where you wouldn't appreciate the color choice that much.

The chin doesn't bother me as much and again if the actual color carried over to the front to be more unified it would have looked better IMO. Also, a space gray option would have been welcomed (even black). I would have preferred a thicker iMac which may/may not have made the chin and bezels smaller.

Maybe a few generations down they'll provide those changes so they can sell you another computer, especially for those like me with OCD tendencies.

Since you asked, "you're wrong".

You can get 2TB in the new M1 iMac as well as the 13" M1 MacBook Pro and M1 Mac mini.

Memory on the M1 is on-package and that memory until very recently only existed in 4GB and 8GB capacities and with room on the package for only two modules, that is why the options have been 8GB (2x4GB modules) and 16GB (2x8GB modules). 16GB capacities are starting production so 32GB will be an option, but it will likely be expensive. I am not sure 32GB modules have started production yet, but it will be very expensive at first I imagine. And the more-powerful M SoC the iMac Pro and Mac Pro may support more than two modules so we will likely see much higher capacities either by 4 or more lower-capacity modules or 2 higher-capacity modules.

And we will see more powerful M-series SoCs with more CPU and more GPU cores. Apple is also developing their own GPU which will probably either be on-package (like the memory) or on the system board like the current AMD discrete GPUs.

No doubt heads will explode on this forum when Tim Cook announced Apple's 2022 financials and reports Mac revenue has more than doubled, driven by strong sales of these Pastel iMacs. :p

I can't wait till tech bloggers start calling the stand the "foot" and get you all freaking out because it's too big.

I have the iMac 5K and it's got chunky bezels on all sides and I LIKE IT because it provides a visual break from what's behind the computer. As for the "chin" I never notice it because I'm, you know, looking at what's on the screen instead of fixating on the frame.

I don't mind the colors or even the chin. what gets me is the white bezels, why couldn't they just color match them to the color of the Mac?
because that white boundary will never get dirty (nose grows)
the white will keep their brilliance for many years (nose grow past this 11" MacBook air)
that white stipe will never fade, peel off or fray (NOSE knocks off apple remote across room, enabling SIRI)
and the white stipe will deter dirty fingerprints,
bug smooshes and is protected against constant light (nose protrudes and turns off tv, my neighbor's TV)

There's nothing on the motherboard that requires much vertical space. All the components are "thin". So of course the new iMac is thin. It doesn't need the depth like the old model did (which required much larger fans).

Get over the thinness of it. It's not like it's a radical design idea. Nothing inside it requires much space

Those colors though... I knew that they were going to be colorful, but I was really hoping that there would be a black option. Or at least a silver without the white bezel...

Why is Apple thinking that everyone wants to have these crazy colors all over the place?
Same irritation here. Why no space grey? Why all of the white bezels? The chin is "meh" to me. I would rather it not be there but I understand why they did it. This design has a lot of potential failed also in a lot of ways. RE: the other colors. Now it is going to be more work for Apple and retailers to keep iMacs on hand with all of these colors. It cuts inventory depth down significantly.

I am also not a fan that they are staggering the release of the different sizes.
What happened to the 28" model that was due for release? So now I know a new M1 rig is out but I have to wait to replace my 2018 iMac another year until the larger one drops on this tired staggered release strategy? Oye. Give up this marketing strategy already. It is dead and gone.

We all wanted this. SIGH

Oh yeah! That is what I was really hoping for. Not only does this align with other products but it would make it more of a closer visual competitor to the Surface Studio. Even if it lacks touch screen and hinging, it would show Apple is making an eventual move in that direction possibly? Not sure I like where this new one is going.
It looks hideous and won't age well. But I get who the target market is. Nobody I know.
Yep. It is going to be that tacky generation that we say sputter into life and quickly out a couple of times in the past. An Apple cringe phase. But usually Apple came out strong when this happened so I am curious what lies in wait for them.
