Everyone just remember, ethernet and TouchID are not included in the base model (and it's pricing)

Sure hope the speakers are good - sure as heck won't want to plug in externals with the headphone jack on the side
Time to get a Bluetooth enabled DAC with your posh new computer - go figure.

I am very disappointed with the lack of 27" or suitable replacement. I suppose it will come but I am impatient!

The 'normal' iMac looks good, I think. The pastel for the front to me feels a little odd, why not go full saturation?
The other choices, power dongle, side headphone jack, featureless chin, don't bother me too much but the silver bezel feels very weird and I can't imagine the 'bigger' and—dare-i-say—"pro" 27/32" iMac would not have a black bezel?
I hope?

If it has silver, I'll live.
Now, to wait for 4-6 months for the big iMac. Wither WWDC?

I have used a iMac for many years, untill I sold it for a MacBook Pro because I needed the space.

What can I say firstly this iMac has lost its appeal, the chin at the bottom has lost its Apple moniker, making it appear generic.

The colours seem dull, and in Apples typically fashion it’s all about the depth, rather than the viewing experience.

I agree with many others it should had been all screen with little to no Bazel. I hope that they do not tarnish the MacBooks pro re -design.

To introduce an iMac in 2021 with almost half of the amount of storage of an entry level iMac TWELVE years older is scandalous. I'd wager a 500GB SSD costs no more now than a 500GB spindle hard drive did in 2009.

I'm all for Apple making money on upgrades btw, but their products shouldn't offer less than they did over a decade ago, purely to encourage upgrading - especially when there's no way for the user to address this in future, which only shortens the lifespan of the product considerably.

Apple should be taken to task for this unnecessary practice which is unethical and contributes to the disposable culture that is a currently causing such a problem.

They've been perniciously slimming down storage on Macs for last 5 or 6 years - particularly on laptops, but there's no excuse for doing that on a desktop.

The Mac OS itself takes about 35GB and you'll lose 10GB or so just for formatting the SSD, so basically from starting you'll have just 200GB of storage on the baseline iMac for additional apps and files.

Apple should be absolutely shamed for this - 8GB RAM and 256GB storage...on a desktop computer in 2021.

The media's silence on this is deafening.

For the M1 Mac Mini, Apple charge £200 to upgrade the storage from 256Gb to 500GB or £400 to upgrade to 1TB.
Likewise upgrading RAM to 16GB is another £200.

Assuming it's the same for the iMac, that'd make an 'entry level' iMac with a modest 16GB RAM and 1TB storage £1849.00. Let's not forget no SD slot, no ethernet and just 2 USB ports too, so it actually has less ports than a 2009 iMac too - they are taking the piss.

Apple are always going on about how their headquarters are carbon neutral and uses 100% green energy, yet simultaneously make their products almost unrepairable and effectively build in obsolescence by shipping them with these pitiful amounts of (unexpandable) RAM and thread bare storage space.

So much for their 'green' credentials then!

It's poor practice at best, completely unethical at worst IMO.

Deserves to fail and should be derided and avoided, but will probably be a huge success.

For all the Apple media outlets not chastising Apple for their pitiful storage and obscene upgrade costs, hang your heads in shame - you are culpable by your silence.

Spot.
On.

Well said and great post.

Apple just green washes all over this while nickel and diming everyone to death.

Personally.. I feel gutted with the design.

I expected more than what we got, and I’m not a big fan of the design at all, the chin still existing - and the fact they’ve removed the Apple logo from the chin too. It kind of just reminds me of all those adverts which use an iMac but edit out the Apple logo (for obvious reasons), which always made it look off.

The colour choices are nice, I’m glad they are a thing, but the light grey (white) borders just clash with some of the colours.

I’m surprised how small the internals are. It is expected, with the M1. But it just feels like there is potential which hasn’t been taken advantage of with all the extra space. Especially when thermals do not seem to be an issue with the M1 chip.

The base of the stand is an ugly design choice too, the extra bit behind the stand - I understand its functionality to make it harder/impossible for the iMac to tilt and fall backwards, but damn it just doesn’t look good.

I also had expectations for more ports too, but oh well.

look forward to opening one up in several years when it comes in the workshop

Can't remember the last Mac I've disliked more.

1. White bezels are trash. Especially on a desktop.

2. Chin looks especially big with no logo.

3. A power brick!?!?

4. Power brick has no ethernet port on the base model nor on the machine.

5. 8 GB is standard and not future-proof.

6. Headphone jack on the side of the machine. Will look terrible with speakers plug into it.

7. No USB-A ports on the base model.
let me remind you this is still on sale

it was a bad deal when released in 2017 and they still haven't killed it, at least its harder to find on the page now.

sidenote: , (I ended up with one but dear god I paid 600$ for it from someone I think it was early 2018 because a guy in town learned he made a bad choice but also needed quick cash)

Wow. I had to buy a new imac 2020 last fall for work. Well, I am SO GLAD I didin't wait for the new apple silicon imacs. These specs are a joke. Its just a giant ipad with a keyboard.

I work in design and animation and mostly use Adobe Photoshop and After Effects plus some C4D. 8gb-16gb of RAM max isn't going to cut it. I need at least 64gb for ram previews and at least 2tb of ssd for storage.

The intel imacs still have that nice little ram door in the back, which means I can add another 64gb in the future at normal market price. The new imacs have memory soldered in so you are stuck with 8gb-16gb forever until you throw away your computer in a couple of years because its not upgradeable. This is the company that stopped giving us chargers with their iphones because they pretend to give a **** about the environment!

I really hope Apple is working on some "pro" imacs that don't suck this bad. A lot of studios I work for have moved everyone to PC's for this reason. Apple doesn't seem interested in creatives anymore.

then you'll have to wait for the real iMacs to be fair, remember this in the lineup to replace the 21.5 abomination I posted a few posts above.

I wholeheartedly agree. An ugly chin with thick, white bezels surrounding a hand me down screen. Plus it’s powered by the same M1 that powers the MacBook Air - an ULTRABOOK.

Underpowered and ugly. I’m going to temporarily (I hope) switch to a higher end OEM PC.
Yet you people constantly fail to realize that you aren't the target market. This is for homes and students, not professionals or tech enthusiasts, or businesses for that matter.

The average person doesn't need an M1X chip. M1 is overpowered for what it is. Better than anything Intel has to offer. You people need to open your eyes and genuinely take a look at the M1 chip performance...
Seriously, who is buying these yellow and orange computers??
Maybe people other than you? Tech enthusiasts act like they're the only people on Earth. It's a computer for the average person. Average people like colors, not tech enthusiasts who simply want boring sterile colors...

Looks like the chin is required for the system board cooling and likely helps makes the speakers sound better.
It lets them build a next generation with edge to edge display... Also perhaps they didn't want it resembling the iPad too closely because now the iPad and the iMac use the same tech... with only minor hardware differences. The bottle neck for touching through all your apps is the lack of Mac OS on iPad.... otherwise... why get an iMac?

Average people buy boring sterile colors and pimp it out with colorful non permanent cases. I promise they're not dropping $1500 on an orange computer or anything too out there. Silver, green, and blue are probably gonna be the best sellers from this lineup as they're the safest.

You people only seem to care about the environment when you get what you want. It doesn't work that way. Modern priorities...

Heck, just use one of the dozens of chargers you probably already have. Start hearing what you don't want to hear. Frankly, I don't think all this whining and venting is going to help either. Go touch some grass and enjoy your life. Apple doesn't look at this forum. Upgradability is a very minor thing when it comes to improving the environment, especially when these computers are recyclable already...
Children?
Children, students, the average everyday individual? Exactly...

Why do I care about that? Doesn’t make the bad new iMac any better.
