One things for sure, Steve is going to demo Tiger AGAIN for the next 30 minutes. Argh!! Anyway, here's to hoping for PowerMac Quad 3.0Ghz G5s with CELL and 16GB RAM upgradability.

Power Macs can use 16GB Ram right now....
All you have to do is use 2GB sticks.... Its not listed as supported but it works

You know, just because something new is released doesn't make your current computer "obsolete." There's always something new coming out "soon." And the great thing about Apple is that they last a lot longer than the average PC before truly becoming obsolete.

Amen to That !!!

i hope...

Along with all the new top end stuff, I would love to see a mini tower. It doesn't have to be a g5. Really. I don't mind.

While product announcements are inevitable, most of us who haven't been to WWDC forget its primary purpose: to instruct developers. This isn't MacWorld, it's not a giant press extravaganza, and it's not a trade show.

I think modest announcements wil happen, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see the PM's top out UNDER 3 GHz. No PB G5, either.

As this is a developer's conference, it would be a disaster for Apple to not have Tiger out at least a month beforehand, so the developers have time to get familiar with it (at least those who weren't in on alpha and beta testing).

Read statements from Apple execs -- they all focus on the point of the conference: connecting with and instructing developers, not generating product hype.

"disaster" - I disagree

I wouldn't see much downside to having 10.4 released at WWDC, or even shortly *after* WWDC.

It would seem to be important for WWDC to focus on what's in the final 10.4, to show people what they're getting.

I don't see the "disaster" scenario, especially since anyone who ponies up the small fee for ADC *already* has the chance to work on becoming familiar with 10.4. It doesn't make much difference to the real developers whether the final release is before, during, or shortly after WWDC.

IMO, it also wouldn't matter if Apple announced that 10.4 would slip a month or two past the artificial "1st half 2005" deadline. Better to make it solid the first time, especially since (AFAAK) there's no new hardware depending on 10.4....

As I recall, last year they made several product announcements in the 1-3 weeks before WWDC started. Steve always likes to do the 'and one more thing...' at everything he keynotes, so I expect something. As far as getting developers up to speed for 10.4 at month before WWDC that's silly. All select and premier members have had 10.4 seeds since last year's conference. 10.4 (build 8A369) is shipping out to ADC members as we speak. At best, 10.4 will be released as GM or near GM at the conference. I think Apple is pushing as hard as they can to have it GM'd in time for WWDC.

As far is random guesses on new product releases, I'd say sometime mid-May for speed bumps, most likely on Tuesday. ;)

Tiger and a Powerbook with some sort of processor other than a the current G4. Dual Core? G5? Cell? who knows? I just want something other than this 4-5 year old chip.

What does the chip you have not do for you, that some other chip would?

A chip is only outdated, when it can no longer handle the things you need it to do.

Mini-tower... Riiiiiight.

Hmm, a non-G5 pb rumor?

However, a HD version would actually be something new and interesting.

"Powerbook HD" is just an interesting label in my mind.

By removing the G4 moniker, we now have an entirely new way of identifying the Powerbook. This could be beneficial to Apple if they are still far off from a Powerbook G5, because everyone knows the G4 is getting old. They could update the rest of the product lines without the glaring absence of a G5 Powerbook. Marketing, gentlemen.

This would be ideal for a setup like the dual-core G4. You can't really call it a Powerbook G4 anymore... what would it be, Powerbook Dual-core G4? DG4? G4 Extreme? Wow, endlessly lame. Places Apple does not want to go.

A modest screen upgrade, new processor, graphics upgrade... who knows, maybe Freescale has something up their sleeve to give the current architecture new life.

Good point, and a nice way to transition to a dual core processor.

My bets

Announcements will be:

1) The 3Ghz PowerBook.
2) The dual-core PowerBook.
3) The ship date for Tiger.
4) The last major seed is given to attendees.
5) Hints about OSX on the Cell processor.

Tiger will ship August 16th.

Hey now! You can't have a 3GHz powerbook before my dual 3GHz G5 comes out!
And why are you getting two powerbook releases and no powermac releases? Hmm? Yes?

:D

I'm not alone in hoping for a beefier small package.
Faster/bigger drive
more ports
I'm assuming developers like desk-space too.

No less a dream than the re-branding of a newly updated Powerbook line.

Look at moii... look at moiiii... look at moiiiiiiiiiiiiiii...

I've got one thing to say to you...

Powerbook G5 yay!
Tiger yay!
(etc)

Well it is rather early for the WWDC right?, as compared with previous conferences.

The sooner the better!

Maybe they don't do a G5 in a powerbook but a Cell processor? haha

The timing of WWDC makes perfect sense. Tiger will be announced, it will be available on Friday, June 24 at 8 PM. As for hardware updates, it's a bit to early to speculate. If PMs only get a speed-bump, it will happen sometime in spring. If IBM can deliver enough 2.5+ GHz chips by April/May, Apple for sure doesn't want to wait until WWDC to announce a minor update. It's also way too early for PB G5s. PB G5s at Paris Expo at the earliest. Generally speaking, it's interesting that WWDC takes place three weeks earlier this year, while Paris Expo is two weeks later than last year. This might be a hint that something important may be announced in Paris.

It's gonna be real hard for apple to release a dual-core G4 powerbook when the dual-core chips won't even be sampling until November/December this year. Or do we maybe think apple has managed to engineer a motherboard for a non-existant chip?

My guess is Tiger in May, new Powermacs in June.

WWDC 06 will talk about OSX 10.5 and a year later we'll have it. So 1st half of 2007. Only a couple of months after Longhorn... the funny thing is that Tiger already looks better than Longhorn... :D

horses for courses.
fcp's showplace is NAB.
fcp5 will need QT 7.
fcp5 and QT 7 will both need minimum spec of tiger.
and a new box will be good to run fcp5's new 'all' realtime features.
all other pro video and audio apps will get an upgrade at NAB plus release of asteroid.
wwdc will not see the g5 powerbook. maybe some add on's to the mac mini to turn it something else (while still being a computer) (something to do with movies? sony's movies?). mini's speed bumped and shipping with 512 ram.
steve does not want to stand before a crowd to announce a 3ghz g5.
he is still pissed over 'that' announcement.
steve demo's all the real time stuff now in fcp5.
mwsf.....g5 powerbook appears at 2ghz.

april 16th......tiger and QT 7 released
april 19th......fcp5 announced at apple media event NAB. also all video/ audio apps get updates....asteroid shipping.
...................apple website shows dual 3ghz/2.8ghz,sp2.5ghz now shipping.
june wwdc....mac mini upgrades and add-ons
mwsf...........g5 powerbook appears at 2ghz.....minimum spec...10.4.5

iMac and PowerMac G5 Updates!

I SERIOUSLY think they will be updating the iMac and PowerMac G5 (either heaps soon or by WWDC) because if you look at the AppleStore Online they're the only products that don't have iLife '05 pre-installed on them. Hmm, ok so that doesn't prove anything but you never know... The next shipment of iMacs and PowerMacs could have Tiger and iLife on them already but arn't available yet until the current stock gets sold. I went into my AppleStore (NextByte for u Aussies) and not one in Sydney (and there's like 4ish?) have iMacs with iLife '05 installed.

NextByte want me to pay Apple and extra $35 for something I really should have on the dam computer! (Meanwhile, what the hell happened to drop-in kits those bloody tight-arses) I just want an iMac... NOW! LOL, hmm, it would be good to have Tiger and iLife '05 on it so I don't need to install it cause I'm just plain lazy... And what's up with 256MB of ram on the 20-inch iMac? BLA! Bump it up to 512... I am paying nearly AU$3k for the thing!
