Apple (Steve Jobs) blew it...

I had $10,000 ready to put down on a new power mac, and fluff around it. But, after that speech and the lack of new stuff I think I'll wait for another 6 months. Leopard is like some jazzed up kiddie toy; might be useful to lots of people but it does nothing substantial to help me. Is there anything noted today that will actually help productivity of a Mac user on a Mac?

Not sure you'll get a new Power Mac. That said, this works in your favour: Power Macs are kind of cheap at the moment, I would get one now if you're planning to get one as the older they get, the less life you'll get out of them.

If you buy them from eBay, you should find they come with plenty of fluff, mostly on the motherboard and in the fan grille. Reconditioned units will generally be a lot cleaner.

Expect to pay around $500-1,500 for a PowerMac with lots of fluff.

Good job with the coverage Macrumors. Best I've seen any website do.

I would just make one small comment: you need to be faster to get the live site down at the end, people are eager to start discussion.
Thank you for the kind words we've gotten from you and ohers.

I understand that you'd be glad to see the main news page return as quickly as possible, but our forums remain open during live events, and people have been discussing this event all day. There was no need to wait until after the keynote.

If you're doing heavy lifting, 64 bit can make a huge difference (for me it's worth upgrading for that alone).

I have no doubt of that. But I don't want to buy one now and by 10.5's release they have a new one on the market... and the 10.5 benefits really are cheese unless you get mesmerized by trinkets.

If some amazing Mac comes out in the fall maybe I'll purchase, but I decided to stay since upgrades coming could be more beneficial.

I felt as though I was watching last year's keynote. What a friggin joke of a keynote.

Other than a new desktop, finder, and quick look there was nothing "top secret" that was announced.

Jobs and company are either getting very arrogant or they are simply becoming hype executives. Let's not forget that at Macworld 2007 they were calling Leopard Vista 2.0 Today, there was nothing new to back up that claim.

So Leopard has been touted to have "Top Secret" features, it's been called "Vista 2.0". Today I call it the much too hyped Mac OS X.

Overall, I was VERY disappointed.

I think there is some cool stuff that was talked about for Leopard (like Piles/Stacks) but the other stuff has been available online at the website for quite awhile. I'm not saying I won't eagerly be awaiting Leopard, but I'm SORELY disappointed. I pretty much have the go-ahead to spec out and order a new iMac, but I'd rather get a new form-factor rather than the existing 24".

<p> oh well ... :(

they showed the mini in the first shot of all the intel machines. Mini is not 64 bit, but Steve said that Leopard is both 64bit and 32bit so you can still install it on the mini.

Unfortunately, the MBs and iMacs are not 64 bit either. Now I am really glad I am waiting for SR on the MB before buying. However, I am wondering about 32-bit apps on the 64-bit only OS. According to MacWorld, "One version of Leopard runs 32-bit and 64-bit apps side by side,” explained Jobs. “If you write a 64-bit app, you can guarantee that it will run on every copy of Leopard out there.” Does this mean that the 64-bit only version of Leopard will not run 32-bit apps?

(Edit: All Napa chipsets are 32-bit even though the Core 2 Duos are 64-bit. This is why none of the macs except the SR MBPs and the MPs are truly 64-bit.)

is it just me, or is the new spotlight purple? yuck, not that i ever use it.

If you do not use spotlight why bother using a Macintosh to start with?

I still think there's more news coming but Steve isn't saying jack... Acutally when I read that the keynote was over I thought it was joke or something. The keynote sounded incomplete or there was just to much to talk about to fit it all in 1:30. I'm hoping i don't have my hopes up to high, but I'm expecting some news in the coming weeks... hope i'm right!:(

No more Aqua tabs on Apple.com.

Also-looks like Apple must have done a port of WebKit in order for Safari to run on Windows. Though-surely Apple could have made a webclip feature work with Yahoo! widget engine .

We're pushing WAAAY too far past traditional cycles to not have something coming. Maybe they just decided that since it was WWDC, they'd leave it focused solely on developer issues, and thus software, not hardware (ie new form iMacs)

We can see now that Apple was serious when they removed "computers" from their company name. Apparently they don't make computers anymore. Or at least not new computers. In 18 months all they've done is added some cosmetic "fluff" for the OS and made a phone. No new computers....

They have been offering new computers, a LOT of new computers. The thing is, they're incremental upgrades. To be honest, that's hardly a surprise. Ever since the switch to Intel it was always likely Apple were going to get locked into a cycle of minor upgrades as new Intel chips come online. With direct comparisons with PCs now possible, they can't afford to be seen as falling behind.

It does mean we're less likely to see gee-whiz, brand new "one more thing" introductions; no Intel Cube or Mini-Pro.

It sounded incomplete? Considering the stuff they choose to put in, I would say they have too little to put in to even fill that 1:30.

If you do not use spotlight why bother using a Macintosh to start with?

quicksilver? stability? virus-free? productivity? ilife? it-just-works? pro-apps? support?

and it might surprise you that there is an app called spotless that completely disables spotlight feature in mac ... and it sells for $12.95 ... and I use it!
