Sorry, don't agree. Firefox has adblock and adblock is the only way to read the web without all those annoying crapverts. Plus the million other addins that make browsing on Firefox so pleasant (e.g. mouse gestures).

Glad to see Safari on Windows. At last we can see an end to the incessant chant from the Windows web development Muppets of "I can't test it on Safari as I don't have a Mac". Not that those ********s would even test it on Firefox.

Still, it's nice to see another competitor for IE.

I hear you, adblock and double click on tab bar to open new tabs are the only two things that are keeping me using firefox over safari at the moment.

this sucks

i lost 100 dollars in apple stocks

they didnt announce anything that would make them money

hopefully later this month it will kick back up

I got all excited about the "unified" iTunes 7-esque look for Safari, except it's still brushed metal on my iMac. Is the new look only for the Windows version?

Good job with the coverage Macrumors. Best I've seen any website do.

I would just make one small comment: you need to be faster to get the live site down at the end, people are eager to start discussion.

installed safari beta, hoped it wouldn't replace original safari and be a seperate app but it hasn't. now safari doesn't load at all. just keeps crashing. I'd rather have the can't install error some people are having instead of mine!

glad I had firefox installed (even though I'm not a fan...). I deleted the download so the uninstaller is missing and for some reason I can't download safari off the apple site with firefox. any tips?

They're not taking anything away from Microsoft with that. 99.9% of Windows users have never heard of Safari. 99.9% of businesses are not going to replace IE with Safari.

Yeah, I guess what I'm meaning to say is that Apple doesn't want to compete with Microsoft on many fronts, so releasing iTunes was a little kick in the shorts, but not a Pele kick since WMP wasn't a do-or-die, "billions of people use it" competition shot.

Now, Safari vs. IE on the Windows platform...well most Windows users use IE, some use Firefox. If Safari can steal some IE supporters...Microsoft may be a little more pissed about that one than they were with iTunes. ;)

That's what I mean.
It's almost like Apple has said "no OS X for x86 because we don't want to compete with Microsoft in the OS department". My thought is - if you're going to compete with them on most of the other levels of included software in the OS - then why not just get it over with and do it anyway?

What's next? iPhoto for Windows? iMovie? Mail? Font Book?
[again] eliminate the middle man..."x86 OS X Leopard. $129. Live virus and spyware free...on your Dell." (I can see it now on Apple's home page) :D

Try turning off Shape Shifter (if it's on) I was having some issues with it too, but that solved it.

is it just me, or is the new spotlight purple? yuck, not that i ever use it.

So Very Very Livid

I'm so gutted there were now new hardware announcements at today's keynote... I had my hopes built up.
Great news about the new finder though but most of the other Leopard features was stuff we've seen before.

I have money that is burning a hole in my pocket - I'm desperate to get my hands on a new desktop after being confined to a laptop for the past year. I was hoping for a new iMac but alas it looks like it ain't gonna be any time soon. I didn't want another DELL but I desperately need a new desktop... Oh what to do...

Is there any chance a new desktop (even an updated desktop) is gonna surface within the next week or so???

Apple (Steve Jobs) blew it...

I had $10,000 ready to put down on a new power mac, and fluff around it. But, after that speech and the lack of new stuff I think I'll wait for another 6 months. Leopard is like some jazzed up kiddie toy; might be useful to lots of people but it does nothing substantial to help me. Is there anything noted today that will actually help productivity of a Mac user on a Mac?

You guys need to relax

1. You guys need to relax. This is mainly a developer event.
2. You got a new Finder and a new desktop - that is pretty huge in my book
3. Safari 3 is for BOTH Windows and OS X 10.4.9.
4. Yes Safari 3 Beta is brushed metal on 10.4.9 - what did you expect? It uses the default rendering. The unified look will be in 10.5. (although on Windows it's the new look - but that's an entirely different beast).
5. I tried Safari on Windows. I think it looks great, but it needs a lot of work. It crashes constantly etc.
6. It makes to sense to release Safari for Windows. It's yet another way to spread the Apple brand. Further if iPone ends up being a succes of the iPod caliber developers need to test their apps on Safari, and since many of those developers will be Windows users Apple just made their job a lot easier.
7. Relax. It's just a computer. Seriously relax.

Great job on the live coverage MR guys.

From what I've read so far in this thread am I one of only a handful of people who actually thought this was a good keynote?? We all knew this keynote was about leopard and thats exactly what we got. Everything else was assumptions based on rumors "it" would be released/announced at this event.

The source of disappointment is more with the lack of anything NEW. Lots of people note that quite a bit of this keynote was stuff we already saw... last year. We were told we'd see some of the "secret" features Steve alluded to last year, and we didn't get much. In light of the fact Leopard is being delayed, people are asking "for what?". Places and Stacks are hardly features that need to be kept supa-double-secret from Microsoft and their "copiers".

Am I the only one who hates the gel buttons and bars? Ugly, old and tired and in drastic need of a replacement. When are they gonna switch to the new look of say the sliders in iTunes?!? Guess they still have 4 months to implement that piece when the iPhone developers get back.

This has been happening after every Apple event for years. Just go back and look at the forum posts following the original iPod announcement. You'll see lots of stuff like: "iPod? WTF? Nobody will every buy it. It's too expensive. It doesn't have enough storage. Blah, blah, blah! Where's the new/updated [fill-in rumored product here]? Apple sux0rs!!!"

This year is no different. Witness...

MacWorld 2007: "iPhone? WTF? No third-party apps? What a joke! Apple is no longer a computer company! Where's Leopard? Where's the redesigned MBP? Where's the eight-core Mac Pro? Where's the mini-tower? Where's the widescreen iPod? Where's the new Finder? Apple sux0rs!!!"

WWDC 2007: "Leopard? WTF? Where's the new iMac? Safari on Windows? Apple no longer cares about the Mac! The new Finder looks like iTunes! Yawn! Web apps on the iPhone? Meh! Where's the multi-touch ultraportable? Apple sux0rs!!!"

Personally, I think Leopard is gonna kick ass! Good job, Apple!!!

so, what did developers get from this keynote, MacRohde?
Aside from some iPhone development updates...

Relax, you'll live longer...

7. Relax. It's just a computer. Seriously relax.

Actually that is well said... I could go out tomorrow and get my hands on a brand new 20 inch core 2 duo iMac... only knowing my luck, a new one will be released at the end of the month and I'll have spent my entire wad on an outdated system...!

Sorry, relax. Yes that's it, chill out, wax your board and relax. I'm trying... really trying. I suppose it won't hurt me that much to plod on with this DELL laptop for now... I JUST WANT SOMETHING NEW!!!!!

Oh dear...

Exactly! For those of us who use a computer for email, internet, word processing and games (apparently about 5% of MacRumors visitors, but about 90% of the PC market), all this Tiger vs. Leopard vs. XP vs. Vista malarkey is just a bunch of useless nonsense that we don't care about.

The only reason I'd purchase a Mac right now is if I could use it for gaming, and since I'm not going to buy a MacPro, and the iMac doesn't cut it as a gaming machine, all of Apple's obsessing about their OS is just hot air to me.

Unless there's a legitimate gaming Mac on the market, all the fancy features of Leopard are meaningless to me and to most PC users.

Things You'll Learn From Reading This Thread...

1) Yes Virginia, there really are idiots out there.
OMG Will it even run on my C2D MB,MBP,MP, WTF-ever I just bought! This sucks!

2) Whine, whine, whine. No matter what Apple does, someone is going to throw a fit.

3) WWDC ( The "D" stands for Developers)
Means -> Topics relevant to developers, not necessarily end users. (See #1)

4) MacRumorsLive kicked pretty good this go around.

/me-> speculation

I still can't see that they would give "everything" away some 4 months prior to actual release. I don't (personally) think that we've heard that last of what Leopard has in store come October.

This was a developers conference not a conference for those who use a computer for email, internet, word processing, and games.

Covered Banners - What were they all about?

We saw the photos of the hanging banners draped in black to hide their content. Anyone know what they were hiding?

BTW: Speed Download, Safari Extender, and SAFT were guilty parties that prevented me from running Safari 3.0 BETA. No problem with running Inquisitor.

it's coming, it's just not ready yet.
it's in a previous developer preview.

So what? Is it in the "feature complete" Preview being handed out right now? Steve gets final say over everything OSX I hear. He can snap his fingers and make Spotlight disappear.

"Home on the iPod" was in an early developer's preview of Tiger. It's not in the final product.

ZFS isn't really "there" in my book unless I can boot from it.

If you're doing heavy lifting, 64 bit can make a huge difference (for me it's worth upgrading for that alone).
