I think the 3D view depending on how they are doing it may very well be a decent replacement for street view (depending on if they just model the buildings or actually get photo realistic skins for the buildings).

3D view only works in large metropolitan cities. And street-view is almost a requirement for me as it is the only way you can verify addresses at a street level. No way 3D view is a replacement for street view. In fact, the whole "3D" in Google Maps and Apple Maps is a big waste of time. It gets lots of headlines but will not be useful for 99% of people.

A half inch icon is a half inch icon, no matter if it's 64x64 or 128x128. Even though the screen is crisper and clearer, you've still got the same interface space as a regular oldschool 15" Macbook Pro.

So if someone found Photoshop to be too cramped at 1440x900, they'll still find it cramped at 2880x1800. It'll just look prettier.

That's exactly what I meant. There are very very few options across platforms at the moment that address that. Apple had two with the hi res 15 adn 17. That just went away. And that is very disappointing.

I was ready go out and make a complete switch over the next few months with two desktops and two laptops. I have a complete list of parts and options in a spreadsheet to replace one PC with a dual-screen tricked-out Mac Mini and then take it from there. Given that with Adobe you have to decide on a platform and given the fact that Apple may not have a laptop for my needs any time soon this is not an option.

And worse yet: still no word on the Mac Pro which for recording would be ultimately what I wanted to go with if I'd been happy otherwise.

Now I don't know what to do and I'm back to square one. Windows is getting silly with its Win8 proposal. Linux even after much trying doesn't work for my needs. Apple looks worse now also. Good times for "app" happy consumers. Difficult times for people with more demanding requirements.

Ok, in areas it exists, I don't see how it wouln't replace that functionality since you would be able to see what it looks like around the street area long as they are using real photo skins so that you can see what hte signs look like, what other buildings around look like.

So, while you do have a point with the fact it is only in large areas, you don't have a point that where it exists it could not be a replacement.

desktop community is not too happy right now. I know I for one was interested in seeing what Apple would whip up with the iMac. I'm imagining a retina touch screen iMac with oleophobic coating and maybe a 24" and 30" versions. Not to mention how amazing a new Mac Pro might be.

Still though, solid conference, great updates all around.

True, but it's a helluva lot closer than what it has been. And it's lightyears beyond what we've currently got on iOS.

Yes, I think it is basically a stripped down version of Google Maps for Android which is fine. After the current Apple Maps app, it is a huge jump. Apple needed driving directions a long time ago so it is certainly welcome.

100% agreed, I don't need to fly over San Francisco to know how to get to the local 7-11.

But, lets be brutally honest, a great deal of what makes Apple successful is "fluff". Functionality is far less a concern when form is involved.

Excellent coverage by MacRumors! Great commenting on the Keynote. Very professionally done and so responsive. Great work guys.

I don't see how that is possible. Does 3D view let you see store fronts in a downtown in a big city? I didn't see that in the demo today.

I don't understand, when I upgraded my desktop monitor to 2560 1440 I had a lot more screen real estate, icons were smaller etc, is this different?

It's the same mac pros on the new product page with just the 2.4 gone. Same old crap again. They must think we are idiots.

Windows 8 might look goofy at first glance, but it's actually pretty decent once you get the feel of it. Right now, if you want a good desktop, it looks like it might be the only choice you've got.

I think Apple is starting to play to their strengths and ignoring their weaknesses completely. The high end desktop scene isn't a space they can't really compete in anymore. Windows is rock solid these days, and HP, Dell, and whole slews of boutique PC shops can offer up a machine as powerful and well built as a Mac Pro at 2/3rds the price. What Apple excels at is offering some of the best portable PC solutions, and that's what they'll be focusing on the most from here on out. We might see an iMac and Mac Pro update here in the near future, but afterwards? I'm thinking we'll begin seeing the updates spaced farther and farther apart til it eventually comes to the point that Apple no longer offers a true dedicated desktop machine at all.

Like it or not, times are a changing.

It is because Apple has updated their UI elements to take advantage of the increase in resolution. In other words, they increased the resolution of the icons, made the text bigger, ect, ect so the bump up wouldn't result in a smaller UI. The icons on OSX as it currently is, displayed on a 15" 2880x1800 screen, would be so tiny you'd practically have to hover your face half an inch away from the screen just to see some of the smaller icons and whoozits.

Airport Express looks different on the US store. Like a mini Airport Extreme. Why is there a 'new' tag over the Mac Pros?

Honestly, I don't know... I saw one photo that looked photorealistic but to be fair I didn't analyze it very closely (was paying attention to text going by).

Anyways, I think Google has said they are dedicated to putting their maps on every platform so sounds like you'll still be able to get google maps :).

Bingo! How did you suss me out? :p

You ordering the retina Pro?

Well, I mean who else could it be :D

My friend is getting a Mac notebook (not sure which one, though I'll convince him to get the retina one :p) before going to HK to get the travellers tax refund. He's coming over to my place before hand so I'll get to play with his before I go get mine :D

Unfortunately, yes. It's different. It took me while to figure this out as well. I first was excited about this whole "retina" business. Until one of the very knowledgeably folks here explained how it really works.

What I would like to see is a 15" display in the 1900x1200 range that actually shows everything with that pixel density and makes things smaller accordingly - or rather offers that kind of real estate. Yes, I know that some people will then complain that things are too small, especially fonts. That's why we would need settings to adjust that. And Apple, to the best of my knowledge, doesn't support this yet. If ever. That's what I mean with my complaint if you will. They don't seem to care about the pro level stuff anymore as long as enough people get excited about the latest Siri crap (I'm still happily on a T-mobile BlackBerry and have yet to find a reason to buy an iPhone or switch providers). Can't blame them from a business model perspective. But the pro grade stuff seems to have gone from being an afterthought to not there at all. How well will that work once the iPhone and iPad stuff has turned into the latest and greatest ghetto phone carried around by everybody and their brother? Without pro grade users where will the drivers in technology be? I mean, really, how many map and navigation "apps" can we need? I already have three on my Blackberry. Google still works best. So they have that covered and it already is a commodity (not even).

Now I'm sitting here, willing to plunk down two and a half grand on a state of the art laptop - with pretty much nowhere to go. Same with my desktop that is in dire need of a replacement. Unless I'm willing to spend 3K on a very old Mac Pro I have to piece together another PC and then hope for the best.

It's very frustrating.

What is the native resolution of the Retina MBPs? It seems as if 1440x900 is not supported, even scaled.
