OK. So obviously no one is doubting the fact that MacWorld actually interviewed this high-level Apple employee, right? And that Apple employee is probably somewhat aware of what "people" are "expecting", right? That in itself is enough to convince me that they are at least demoing 970s and announcing availability in a reasonably short time.

Hype created by the rumor community is one thing (remember the G5?), but THIS is mega hype created by our favourite computer and software company, so they had better put performance where their mouth is.

-snip- Will you really be let down if all Apple does is an in-depth presentation of Panther??? C'mon! That will be amazing all on its own.

Apple talks about Panther and a few software apps = People will be pissed that they never talked about 970s.
Apple talks about 970s running Panther, but don't show them or go into detail = People will be pissed that they never showed the 970 or didn't go into enough detail.
Apple shows the 970 and it has the same case as the current tower = People will be pissed that they didn't have a new case for a new processor machine.
Apple shows the 970, running Panther, with a new case, but it's (the 970)not shipping until Panther ships in September = People will be pissed that they have to wait a while to buy a new machine (as if there is anything wrong with the current ones).
Apple shows the 970 running Panther in a new case design, and announces that they are shipping immediately = People will be pissed because they get a whole lot more machine, but Apple didn't reduce the price!
Apple shows the 970 running Panther with a new case design, they are available for purchase RIGHT NOW for $200 less than current machines = People are pissed at Apple cause they STILL aren't as fast as the fastest PC!
Will it ever end???? 🙄

anyone know if any of the Texas Apple Stores will be showing the keynote? maybe the St. Louis store? reason I ask is because I'm in Oklahoma and kinda in the middle of there, but really want to go see the keynote if it's not broadcasted on the web.
so, anyone know?
I still say new Apple Pro Keyboard and Apple Pro Mouse.

article clarified. These weren't meant to be considered complete store redesigns... simply product-display changes.

I'm also one of those who have no money for new hardware (I just put some money on a 15gb ipod though). I'm also still very happy with my g4/733 and it'll still be fine for a couple of years from now (I still use my old performa 6400/180!).
What I'm waiting from OSX (probably not from Panther though) is that the interface would be a bit snappier.. I had to boot to MacOS9 today, and opening windows etc felt so fast! I want some of that included in X.. Otherwise I'm already very happy with Jaguar.
What comes to hardware releases, I'm waiting for them pretty much only because I get that "oh but macs are so slooow" talk all the time. and people thinking that way will definitely not be switching.. and because they're not switching, I'll still be having only one (yes, only one) friend with a Mac and who lives in the same country 😉

As a recent (about a week =P) switcher (the iBook listed below is my first mac), I'm a bit curious about how much RAM you have in your g4/733, and what GFX card you are using. I'm saying this because I expected some clunkiness coming from XP after all the complaints I had heard in that regard about OS X. However, after getting my 'book, I can just say that I find OS X to be very snappy and overall responsive - this coming from a longtime XP user on a relatively fast PC. Sure, XP is very snappy (and pretty stable - good os overall), but I really don't find the difference between XP and OS X to be very substantial.
