I just got done talking to my mom, who was talking to an Apple rep at a CompUSA store. I told her to ask him if anything new was coming at the end of the month. The rep laughed and said something to the effect that the rumor sites are pretty accurate at whats coming out. I think he gave a reference to macosrumors.com, but I'm not too sure.
Not to kill your hope about the 970s, but...
I can guarantee you that the Apple Reps at CompUSA do not have any pre-knowledge about what's going to be announced. They'll learn if/when they have a conference call before the announcement.
Of the CompUSA reps I know, none of them even read rumor sites. I worked at CompUSA and the Apple Rep there and I will occassionally have discussions about what's coming up, but I have to clue him in on what rumors are floating around.
I would assume the same thing about Apple Store sales associates as well. They'll learn when the products arrive, unless they're wrapped and covered.
Realize that Apple works very hard to prevent new product information from leaking out, so informing a CompUSA sales rep is a bad idea. Not that any of them would intentionally leak anything (Apple would hope), but why entrust someone with key information if they can't do anything about it. Their job is to sell you what product they have on the shelf, not defer your purchase until the next generation PowerMac comes out.
I'm still amazed when I see stories of sales reps who tell customers to "wait until Tuesday..." before buying anything. I guess those folks aren't making any sales bonuses.
And to think, the keynote is on Monday, so in theory, there'll be now PowerMac introduction, only an xServe since Apple only announces xServe and Software products on Mondays. J/K
