No. It says As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and waive the $18 upgrade fee

huh. someone will inevitably call AT&T.

i wonder why they bother with the $699 pricing when users with the iPhone 3G (for a year) will pay around a $115 early termination fee + a new $299.

This is what I get on Apple's page:

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 05/06/2010.

* $299.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
* $399.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
* $499.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

because they exaggerate. Oh this is the worst keynote since i was born etc...thing is these people say that for every keynote...it gets old after the 3rd apple event

People also say this was the best keynote in the history of keynotes, which is probably hyperbole, too. I think there's some unevenness around here regarding who gets jumped on for exaggerating.

Anyway, that aside... I'm not really in the market for a new Macbook, but the Pro sure is looking attractive, especially at that price point!

is the new phone going to cause alot of current 3G users to upgrade now...(as in break contract, or extend contract...whatever the right process is with ATT)...probably not. Will it keep original 2G iphone users whose contracts are up in a few weeks....probably...

so mission accomplished? for now?

So I'm still on Tiger and have been waiting for SL. Will I need to buy Leopard and upgrade to SL? That would cost what... $129+$29=$158 plus tax? Why on earth did Apple not mention the stand alone price; if any...:confused:

Edit: taking a second look at the added up price. Wasn't Leopard released at the $160 point, thus making this basically the equivalent price of a new OS? Hmm

And then consumers will look at netbooks (with Windows) and go :D while Apple looks at netbooks and goes :confused:

netbooks are going to be so 2008 and 2009 in a few years... why would i go out and get a watered down laptop? when i have the iphone which i consider a watered down laptop?

As they stand now, Netbooks are ghetto.

Apple's target market isn't interested in thr kind of netbook trash that's out there now.

This was really funny to read after the fact :)

ATT usually allows you to upgrade your phone a few months before your contract is up. So 3G owners will probably be eligible around this time next year, if not a month or so sooner, but by then there will be rumours of the iPhone 3GUltra or something like that. I know quite a few people who never upgraded their original iPhones will will probably get the 3GS, as well as people who were stuck in some other contract last year or just decided they wanted/cound afford an iPhone later in the game. Or people who bought other smartphones and are now disappointed with them. I still know plenty of people who say they want an iPhone or want to upgrade their original iPhones, so I doubt Apple and ATT will be hurting from not subsidising users who are currently under contract. Sure, there are a few features in the 3GS that I would like, but it was my choice, and the choice of millions of others, to get an iPhone when we did. Granted, my old phone was practically dead when I got it last summer, but if the iPhone didn't have what I wanted I would have bought a cheap phone that didn't require me to renew my contract and waited for this year.

The same is true for the new MBPs. Don't spend $1000 on something that doesn't do what you want it to. Especially from Apple, who is well known for constantly upgrading their products. I was really excited when the original MBPs were announced, but waited nearly a year before getting one, when it had the features I wanted/needed. A couple months later they came out with another update, but I was fine with what I had because it fit my purpose.

And read the fine print:

For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

A nice deal since you qualify for the discount. We're getting $100 off again it seems.

Yeah, $100 off the base MBP was unexpected. That paired with the free ipod and $100 rebate for a printer is a pretty sweet deal for students.

Leopard launched at $129. I'm guessing for Tiger users, this'll just replace Leopard at $129.

is a standard iPhone upgrade the 199/299?

Call AT&T. I know in the past they've made exceptions depending on your account. A friend upgraded a few months ago after only having his phone for a little under a year for the promo price because he had paid his bill on time every month and had an account over $100.

That's not the pricing the OP quoted, it was cheaper:

Netbooks have changed a lot in the last year and a half. If your only experience is with ones that came out around the time of the Eee 701, you need to take another look. My Eee 1000HE is solidly built, and while I'm not about to render full length movies on it, it does everything I could want from a portable. It's way more capable than an iPhone and is by no means "ghetto". It only needs OS X, iLife, and iWork to be perfect.

Still no flash and no front camera. Seems like I won't have to upgrade after all, which is too bad for Apple because if I think like this... more people will.

And for the rest of the hardware, still too expensive, compared with other non-Apple branded hardware. I do however like the 7 hour battery life. That's for sure.
