You should see them...Up close. They are beautiful and super detailed.

They aren't bland at all..they look like...paper.

****. I shouldn't have said that :(

While they might be beautiful up close, the size I'm seeing them on the previews is already at a larger icon size than I would have them at. Even at the shown size, they all look the same if you are just glancing.

I could rearrange them, and you would most likely not be able to pick one out within a few milliseconds like you can now with the colored and unique looking icons [speaking about the Home, Music, etc folders]. For just a plain folder, I still think they're ugly and totally don't fit into the 3D look of the system. It's like putting a flat square in Quake 5 as your enemies icon, it wouldn't look right  ...bad example but you get my point.

I think we have too many nit-picking whiners here...

If you ask me, I'm loving how Leopard is turning out. BRING IT ON! ;)

So long, lickable UI...

. . . The folders look, quite simply, hideous. What were they thinking?

I couldn't agree more. Why didn't they get some third-party guys to design some new icons? Someone like the guys at InterfaceLIFT maybe? I don't know . . .theirs seems a WHOLE lot sexier and better designed to me . . .

If they can get Mike Matas from Delicious Monster to design interfaces, they sure as hell could of gotten someone ELSE to design these things!

Those seem cartoony. Toylike. They are pretty...but I wouldn't say they were classy ;)

Looks fine up close and that enormous. I don't intend to use Coverflow much in the Finder, maybe I'll change, but I doubt it. So with the folder icons hanging in around 64px, and that's even too big for me, they're not very discernible.

Like many things...its hard to imagine until you do it. I guess its a left brain/right brain thing. I remember what i "did" or what I "saw" moreso than "what i called it" and it seems besides the "Ooo-Ahh" effect, CFlow and QLook really target that part of the brain...at least for me.

When you have a folder with 100+ documents in it, seeing whats on the page is a different sort of thing.

Again, you'll see :)

Well my point is that they weren't the best or "CLASSY" (thick New Jersey accent here) but that there are a lot better looking 3rd-party icons out there right now than what Apple is giving us. Apple's look too much like discarded business graphics from a bad PowerPoint presentation. That's all.

The only way icons like that make some sense if if they look gorgeous when you colorize them, like 0S 9. I don't know anybody who uses icons big enough to even see that texture. Kind of loses the concept of what icons are all about.

You know, instantly recognizable at a glance, not squint at the subtle embossed icon-on-an-icon-in-monotone.

Add some pink tights and some leg warmers, and we've got the soundtrack to Top-Gun!!!

I guess they hired Twisted Sister to make icons.

I'm a 100% Mac guy, but I have to admit...

Vista is looking a whole lot sexier now than OS X.

It's the truth.

Alright that's it...

Note to Apple, Inc.

Take another six months with Leopard development and get it right. Release it first quarter, 08. You have my unqualified forgiveness for the delay, right now, in advance.

And please, just stop it with the iTunes-is-the-answer-to-all-software-improvements approach. iTunes is a great database manager for media...well, it was before you botched it up with iTunes 7. But there is no need to use it as a template for everything. Sure there are millions of iTunes downloads, but it also happens to be the only decent program of it's kind out there - and it's free. Under the circumstances, it's taking a huge leap to say it is perfect due to the huge number of downloads. There may be other circumstances compelling users to download iTunes.

It used to be that, pre-Leopard, OS X was fun to use, in no small part due to the "look and feel" of aqua and various animations in the OS. Now, that "look and feel" nature of aqua that made the OS X unique and fun to use seems to have been replaced by none other than "cover" and "flow". Not that cover flow is bad, but geez, don't pound us over the head with it. Enough is enough.

Nevertheless, you can bet your bottom dollar that cover flow is going to end up in the next version of iPhoto...and iMovie...and iWeb...and iDVD...and Garageband...and on and on and on.

How about a little more moderation and just a bit more innovation as an approach to UI? You did it with time machine, but unfortunately, we all hope that will be the least used application Apple has ever written. Now, if you just apply that same je ne se qua to the rest of Leopard - and let iTunes just be true to itself.

You do realize it is like 4 months out right? And this is a BETA copy?

Cover Flow, IMO, is a new approach to UI. You can quickly scroll through items to find what you want. And they added the viewing functionality as well. Which will let you quickly preview what you want.

I don't mean to sound like SJ here but really, Cover Flow is actually pretty darn cool. Just because it started with iTunes doesn't mean they don't innovate. To each their own really. I think I would enjoy using it. And guess what, no one is making you use it. Its not like everything is cover flow you know.

Whats more, who is to say this wasn't the idea for Leopard that they simply through into iTunes to give it a fresh look? You can't assume all this came from iTunes. When it could just be that iTunes took some cues from Leopard.

Oh yeah, you can stick with Tiger if you want. :D

You don't NEED to use coverflow. Its an extra option.

I feel sorry for ThinkSecret. I respect them for continually bringing Leopard goodness to the masses. I hope Apple's legal ninjas don't bust 'em. :(

Luckily I had already downloaded the pics from the gallery. *evil laugh* ;)

I am awaiting any tidbits on Leopard SERVER "benefits", since features and details are embargoed. I will not sign an NDA (which allows me to post scoops to Macrumors) but am really interested in Apple server features which rival enterprise systems and public license systems. After all, a "vision" and a "GUI" have added value.

Thank you! Finally someone who gets it. Just because Apple released a "feature complete" version to developers....doesn't mean it's done.

It's a BETA.

As for the new icons....How do we know that they aren't working on a whole new icon set to release with the final version?

Apple gets to sit back and let the comments/suggestions/bugs/etc pour in, and prioritize and address them as they see the need.

Let's cut Apple a little slack for now. If the final shipping version doesn't impress, then you can go crazy.....but until then, enjoy the new features.
