I don't think you'll see aqua replaced until OS 11.

Like I've discussed before here, it's really not easy to replace aqua given the massive amount of custom aqua widgets in EVERY application.

Apple could easily replace the core aqua widgets but the problem is apps will still have those custom aqua widgets inside.

I was hoping they would do Spaces for Widgets - I have my MBP with an external screen at home but on the road the two screens of widgets overlay each other. Spaces for widgets would solve that.

i personally find the iTunes 7 UI even worse than xp/vista/linux..
:(

bring back aqua!!
bring back the 2d dock!!
bring back the old menu bar!!

We still have aqua! You'll easily be able to change the icons back if you don't like the new ones.

The dock is probably changeable with ClearDock, or there will be a haxie within two days to change it to 2D

THE MENUBAR IS AN OPTION!

Yeah, but some apps still look great with widgets different to the normal ones, and could easily be changed (see the latest NetNewsWire)...

Getting rid of brushed metal and pinstripes seemed easy enough aswell...

Am I the only one who's not really blown away by anything in Leopard? Sure there's some cool things, but they mosly just seem random and more decorative than useful...like they exist because Jobs said "Hey guys, we need new stuff to show" more than for a reason of true need.

Time Machine probably seems like the most useful thing to me, but I use a laptop 75% of the time, and in multiple locations. How useful is that going to be since it requires an external drive to work? Kind of kills the whole portable advantage.

It's strange, six months ago I was knocking on the iPhone as all flash and no substance and looking forward to Leopard. Now, I'm barely interested in Leopard and the more I see of the iPhone, the more useful it looks.

That's because those are core UI elements share among all apps. Just like it would be easy to replace scrollbars......

the problem is, for example. Look in the resource folder of Mail.app and every graphic you see that has aqua in it is custom and not being provided by the OS.

I love it. It has advantages for me (screen sharing being a major one, and I love the look).

It has advantages for my grandad (resolution independence and heavier shadows being the major ones)

It has advantages for my sister (webclip, she's a dashboard addict)

It has advantages for my dad (Finder coverflow, he has a huge amount of badly named documents)

I can't stand the wait...

.
Lately Apple seems to have been making changes just for the sake of making changes.
Agreed

.
Somethings I don't like about:
*The rounded corners seem to be disappearing. The menu bar now has square corners, and windows have so little rounding at the top they almost look sharp.
Same here. Too sharp=too harsh

.
*If you are going to unify the interface, why not use something a little lighter. Maybe it's just me, but the dark grey seems to look out of place on the vast majority of windows.
First thing I noticed too in those new movies. Way too contrasting er something. something isn't right, lighter would probably be much better.

Other things i hope for
* That the Quick Look window can be closed with command-w. in some apps, apple or otherwise cmd-w doesn't always close a palette window like that --- it instead closes the main document window behind it. that would really suck and make it Not So Quick Look.

This is a nonsense argument.

Anyone who develops an app will have far harder and more challenging tasks than swapping over a few custom widgets to fit in with a new look.

It could easily be done in a few weeks.

You answered your own question. Most of Apple's resources lately have been devoted to the iPhone (and it shows).

I think strategically that is a great decision. iPhone may be Steve's 2nd baby, but everything he does (not always apparent) is for his first born--the Mac!

Just think without the iPod--without the iPhone, Apple wouldn't be receiving any attention and who knows what would have become of the Mac by now. Apple has once again become a major player and without things like iPod and iPhone that would have only hurt the Mac.

Steve receives lots of praise and lots of criticism. From a business perspective Apple has done a complete 360 since his return. Have we always agreed with his decisions? No. But he is a great CEO and this is the real world. His number #1 priority is to Apple's shareholders. This is the grown up world--get used to it. I often hear people whining about Apple's decisions, but they have no sense of the business "real" world. If a company doesn't grow, the stock sinks and shareholders sell. And it doesn't matter how rich a company is. Even Microsoft must grow into new markets or their stocks won't grow.

Sorry. Can't wait for the iPhone :)

Anyone noticed there's no transition between the desktop and FrontRow? That's jarring. I hope the final version will include a transition. Even a simple cross-fade would be better.

It's because the frame rate at which the desktop was captured is lower than that of the animation of front row.

What I did notice however is that when he was trying to browse images with front row, he got a message saying "There are no photos on your AppleTV" when that computer is clearly not an AppleTV but some macbook or macbook pro. I can tell this from the sound of the keyboard when he was typing on the "Speech" video.

Videos - Poor Quality :-(

I wished the videos had better resolution to just see what is going on the desktop. It is very difficult to see how Leopard works. Seeing the text on the screen is very difficult.

Oh Well, Maybe the person that did these videos might enhance the quality to see them better.

:-(

I was hoping to see a vid of Time Machine. I keep hearing you need an external drive for TM...this surely isn't the case for those of us with a Mac Pro. I've been reserving a drive bay specifically for Time Machine.

It will work with a second HD.

i dont know if i like the front row switch, its cool. but i enjoy the current one. also whats up with the weird antique sepia tone screen saver that bounces? i dont get it. other than that everything is sweet

Since that screensaver is called "Retro" I suspect that the point of it is to mimic old-timey film (the sepia look, of course, but also the sort of "jerky" nature of film run through an old projector). I would assume it looks more effective in real life (someone mentioned that this wasn't capturing some core animation stuff, etc.).

I'm pretty impressed with the speech capability in Leopard demonstrated in the video. Maybe it is just me but it seems like they improved it a lot.

Stacks, on the other hand, is killing me. I don't mind the grid that pops up, but the bit tall leaning stack looks just awful IMHO. The stack curves for no apparent reason, and it looks aesthetically horrible. I'm pretty sure any good graphic layout professional would have to agree.

If Apple didn't do such a normally solid job designing things, it wouldn't be any big deal. But stacks really stands out as a open sore on the desktop, IMHO. Maybe if they just made the stack perfectly vertical or something....

I think the idea behind the "curve" of the stacks is to sort of mimic what happens when you spread a bunch of photos or documents out....... that is, they sort of "arc" in the direction your spread them out, rather than spreading them out in a completely straight vertical line.

That's at least what I assumed they were going for as a metaphor, and it does tie into the rest of the "stacks" concept.

If it didn't jerk, it wouldn't be a screensaver, although we don't really need them nowadays...

In a WWDC '06 presentation, it was shown that you could search in the 'Help' thing for an action (the example was 'center' and if possible, the app would do it, or guide you through the menu bar)
