True. I guess when we see a prediction by a "newbie" we should take it with a mine of salt. So, when's the next big event? Paris? We'll see them back talking about what's definitely going to be released.

I'm still waiting for a follow-up post form NeatGekko - that was just surreal
when I saw that he posted again - and with that crazy iPod statement...

How about those displays, though? I wish I (a) had money, and (b) needed one. They look pretty slick.

Yah, I'm in the same boat. Apple has an unacanny ability to make me want to spend a lot of money on cool products that I don't really need...

Hey now.

Don't forget that some of us "newbies" have been using Macs since before we could read. Just because someone is new to a forum does not necessarily mean he or she is not capable of making a reasonable and informed prediction. I don't blame you for thinking otherwise though...it just takes a few hand eating gekkos to ruin it for everyone else. :)

Yes, and I'm relatively new to the platform. It's just that before one of the big events, there's always a barrage of rumors - most coming from newbies - that never end up being true. And then those people making those claims disappear until the next event. It's sort of a recurring cycle. That's what I was referring to. (I didn't mean any offense.)

You know its not really fair to say that Gekko only appears around big events with his insider information. Its just that since MacWorld he's only had his nose to type with and it takes him a really, really long time to post his absolutely concrete insider information.

Where did all the doubters go?

You know what I find most interesting about those who criticize others? When they're wrong they disappear like nothing ever happened.

A good example of that is the report (and it wasn't a prediction) from Think Secret at the end of last week detailing what would and would not be introduced at WWDC.

As soon as it was posted, the skeptics and rumor bashers were out like vultures. They attacked, criticized, said what they reported had no factual evidence, and many other shots across the bow.

But as soon as the WWDC keynote was over and it was obvious TS was right in its report, you couldn't find nary a one of those people who publicly doubted and blasted the original report. Like roaches who crawl away before the sun rises, I see no posts on these forums praising or admitting they had made their own mistake by criticizing someone else who had sources and made the correct call.

Next time you cock roaches want to blast others when you have no evidence to back up your claims and you know not a damn thing about news reporting, remember what happened on Monday, June 28.

That 30inch monitor is way cool, but unfortunatley they're 6 grand here in Oz. Even though they don't look anywhere near as good, i need my kidneys for important bodily system maintenance.

I was hoping for a sniff of the next gen iPod. Oh well, christmas time maybe.

speculation

Not all those who speculated got it wrong. Thediesel got it right. Down to the cheaper Airport.

He cheated though by telling us where he got it from. That made him seem less Godlike.

True. He also said "...just some display related things. Well airport is going to be cheaper."

There are definitely a few "display related things," but is Airport cheaper now? I can't remember what the price was set at before.

Anyway, good job, thediesel.

Airport Extreme cards were $99 originally, and the base stations were $199 for the ones without the extra ports. These have now been dropped and all base stations are the formerly more expensive part at the previously lower price point.

All in all, it's about $70-90 off a full system for a first-time buyer.

A question of when

No offense taken :)
Here's a thought. Paris is only two months away, so it does make sense to introduce new G5 iMacs there. However, the iMac needed to be updated at least two months ago. How likely would it be for Apple to hold a special press event in July specifically for the new iMacs (and now shipping Airport Express, all displays, and 2.5 GHz Powermacs). They've done it for the music events and for the introduction of the original iPod. Has it been done before for a new computer?

iMac - Paris - Birthday, those were the three words Steve Jobs used at the WWDC in SF to highlight Spotlight's search technology.

An article on MacBidouille (http://www.macbidouille.com/niouzcontenu.php?date=2004-06-30#8925) calls attention to this (maybe) remarkable fact.
Does that mean we're gonna see new iMacs at Paris, or even an anniversary iMac ?

Wow

I knew Steve used those in the Demo but I never thought that those could be a kind of message

I think the iMacs need something this year at least, sure it may not be a G5 but if something could be done then the iMac may become popular again

In principle, that isn't totally out of the ballpark, but given the fact that, as you say yourself, Paris is only 2 months away + the allusions + they have to show something at Paris makes it, IMHO, very likely that Paris is the place and time for new iMacs (that will eventually ship God knows when ;-)

Probably new iMacs then. Actually, when Steve did the search for "iMac" on Spotlight, I was straining to see if I could catch a glimpse of "G5" anywhere on the screen. Pathetic, eh?

Hahahaha :D . Well, I think when it comes to the innards of a new iMac, 'G5' is what we're all looking for. Frankly, a G4 would be pathetic... But it should be a G5.

Fair enough, but for crying out loud: why the heck didn't they bump up the iMac to 1.5 or 1.6 months ago?????????

I am cautiously optimistic that the next iMac will indeed sport a G5 under the hood. If Apple were to simply speed bump it to a 1.5 GHz G4, I don't see why they wouldn't have done this months ago. Perhaps if they were performing minor updates to some of the other hardware (i.e. an 8x SuperDrive) then maybe it would take a little longer, but I can't see almost a year going by since updates, and Apple only releases a 250 MHz update!

Sure, this is what Apple did in a sense with the PowerBooks, going from 1.33 GHz to 1.5 GHz on the high end, however there were a lot more factors at play I would venture to guess on why this was necessary and why the G5s weren't ready for a portable machine yet (as this topic has been discussed to death). With the iMacs, although there are no doubt challenges to fit a G5 inside, I would guess they wouldn't be quite as severe as is the situation with the PowerBooks...

Anyway, all this said, I do think the next update to the iMacs will be a G5 iMac with a new form factor and other updated hardware as well. I can't wait to see it!

The next imac, which will come out within 3 weeks, will sport a 1.5 GHZ cpu and a stronger graphics card with faster hard drives all along with a modified pricing structure. There will be no G5 imacs until next year.

... ...Are you NeatGekko in disgiuse?? ;) Nah, just kidding, although you do sound fairly sure of yourself. Is this just your prediction or do you somehow know this as fact? Please share!

I'd be OK with that, as long as what I emphasized in that quote also is true.

I see this going one of three ways, and I lean most heavily to the first:
  1. Apple kills the iMac AIO and introducers a consumer tower based off a single G5 processor, with consumer-grade options in the accessories. The expandability is limited but better than the current iMac and allows for some cheaper options that the current pro machines ignore. They can rebadge it or keep it under the same name, but it might not be a bad idea to just call it the Macintosh and trade off the simple, for-the-rest-of-us marketing.

I would be surprised to see it as more than the following:
    Apple Macintosh
    Single 970 1.6/1.8/2.0ghz (130nm part)
    PC3200 256MB/512MB/512MB
    GeForce 5200/GeForce 5200/Radeon 9600XT
SATA 80GB/80GB/120GB (room for 1 more drive)
    8x SuperDrive
    Gigabit Ethernet
6.1 Audio with SPDIF out (no optical input)
    FireWire 400 and 800
    USB 2.0
    2 PCI-X slots
    AGP 8x
    Cost: $1,199/$1,399/$1,599
  2. The iMac does surface as an AIO model, but require liquid cooling to reach anything even close to a remotely usable temperature. This ups the price rather than drops it and people complain vehemently about how Apple "doesn't get it," when they're the ones who want Apple to defy the laws of physics. The results are an underclocked G5 and less performance, which make people scream all the more loudly.
  3. Apple amazes me and pulls the proverbial rabbit out of their hat. The iMac is something unexpected, like a dual e600, a full-scale G5 processor, or something equally unlikely at this point. The Apple X-Factor always has to be taken into account, but that makes it hard to really guess what might be going on.

I wouldn't be so sure of that, really. The current iMacs aren't a whole lot bigger on the inside than some laptops out there, and they've only got one serious advantage - a constant power supply. It suffers extreme constraints on space, convection, noise and other considerations that make it very much like designing a laptop, but with that one factor thrown out. I really think that the comment from Apple about the similarity of issues is more than people are taking it as.

Oh well.
