Nope. Microsoft continues to want Windows 7's release date to be a surprise, but by all accounts it's expected to RTM by August so that it can be pre-installed on OEM machines for this holiday season.

How will I, as an ordinary user, benefit is my question?

We don't know yet. Everything that's been reported is speculation or leaks from the closed developer beta. Apple has not announced any specifics on Snow Leopard other than what's on this page: http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/.

I'm sure they'll be glad to wow us at WWDC with everything we'll be missing if we don't upgrade.

Personally, I think Apple's marketing department has its job cut out for them if they want the Mac user base to upgrade in masses to Snow Leopard. It's hard to sell "No New Features" especially considering the enormous feature checklists Apple has put out in the past regarding 10.x updates.

Traditionally, Mac users have adopted the latest operating system release rather quickly compared to other install bases. Snow Leopard may be the first Mac OS X release to buck that trend. If it truly drops PowerPC support (and it should, IMO) and possibly Core Duo support (rumored, but unfounded), the upgrade base will be limited to late 2006 and up model Macs.

Not to mention, if Snow Leopard does turn out to be more of a service pack release than a major release — its successfulness in terms of install base may be hampered even more. We'll just have to wait and see.

We could see: New Cinema Displays
I hope we don't have to wait that long. The MR Buyer's Guide already says "Don't Buy - Updates soon" based on the schedule of previous releases. I wonder what would prevent Apple from having new displays ready well before June.

He is not coming back.

Hey everyone- great to be back on MR! :)

My birthday is in two weeks and I gave a strong sales pitch to my mom to switch from Verizon to AT&Pee (Her one-line contract is 40 bucks, plus the 30 for the data plan on an Blackberry, which she wants, is equivalent to the base contract price of an iPhone. *Hint: this is great for other highschoolers, like me, wanting iPhones*).

Now, I've been reading about the possible Verizon iPhone at WWDC and was wondering-
1. Should I not bother waiting and get an iPhone (If possible) or iPod touch (more likely)
2. Should I wait until the conference and go from there

If I get an iPod Touch now, I will have a second when I buy my new MacBook this summer, with my student discount. I have an iPod now if I have to wait I will, it's just awesome to watch everyone on the bus playing with theirs- I wasn't even considering an iPhone until playing with one just last week, lol

Help muchly appreciated! :)

Surely they have to announce a new iphone.

I (and I suspect most people) just can't get excited about a new big cat named OS release.

you mean bug fixes and performance improvements should be called SP1? and not new OS X and charge $129 that?

It remains to be seen. I aplaud Apple's stability, speed and refinement focus in SL. I felt the same way about Vista SP1 and XP SP2. :apple:

Only that it's Adobe's job to optimize Flash Player...

I doubt that Snow Leopard will be shown on WWDC, I think it will be released earlier than that.

And who knows, maybe that March 24 even will be the launch event and MAYBE Apple will also release the Desktop Set for regular PCs.

Oh, and personally, I also do not believe that Steve Jobs will return to Apple.

I expect them to use the show to announce 10.6 will ship in January 2010.

first realistic post in this thread

The guy stepped down because he's sick. That's not something you typically do as a CEO with plans to come back. Children might buy into the line, "leave of absence", but that's who its for. It comforts those who buy it. Then when June comes and Apple is moving steadily forward with Cook at the helm, the children will then say, "He'll be back its just a matter of time."

There is actually no reason to think that he will return, unless its just wishful thinking.

If there is any truth to the March 24th event, then with the latest seed of Snow Leopard I'd almost be inclined to agree with you on this ^.

Snow Leopard is either almost ready, or no where near ready.

If they could release it this Month, that would be very exciting for us Devs as we'd have 2 months to play with it until WWDC. Then at WWDC hopefully they introduce a new iPhone situation, with very new hardware elements that enabled a host of new options within the SDK.
