I don't know, depending on the show I think something along the lines of self-spoofing can fit in with the humorous aspect. There are even shows that have an episode or two that are just musicals, so there's definitely a spectrum to these offbeat/humorous episodes with different styles and levels of that offbeat or humorous quality that can work for different shows.

It is what it is. Ratings will be the final arbitrator. :)

That's the way all Darin Morgan written episodes have been. They break away from the shows norm in very strange ways, usually tackling some pretty grim, existential subject matter in a comedic, lighthearted way.

His episodes, I believe there are 5 of them altogether, are usually numbered among the best the X-Files had to offer.

Funny that one of the best "lighter" episodes was Bad Blood (IMHO) which was not written be Morgan. As a long time fan, I liked his stuff but always felt there were better written episodes out there.

FWIW

Man, this six episode run is more of a disappointment to me then just about anything in films/tv ever. That FANTASTIC episode that everyone who got to review it before air was sooooo bad (lizard-werewolf-bear-man-pig-baby-monkey-puppy) and the last one was just a snooze fest. We get it, Scully regrets giving up her son. What a dick thing to say to Mulder at the end. Your mysteries will be solved but mine won't. Uh, it his kid too, dick.

So far this season has been hit and miss, I can't say it's great, mostly just watchable. The last one I've seen was about the "imagination" bad karma guy that the painter sculpted, who lived to rip bad people apart. Now were those bad people, bad because of the perspective of the painter, or was his creation an independent arbiter of justice? ;) I thought an opportunity was missed at terror. We see people trying to get away, but for the most part when they were caught, no screams of terror, just r..i..p, as in being ripped apart.

Of course all it took to resolve the issue was to sculpt a happy face on it. Right, so now before being ripped apart the bad people get to see this happy nighmare, lol. Did Mulder and Scully file a report or they just walked away to let the police try to figure out what happened? :p As you may be able to tell, I was not happy with that episode. I'm much happier when they actually make progress towards the alien dna story line. I guess with 6 episodes, it's not much of a commitment anyway. :)

And that's the problem with these episodes and the second movie, they didn't address the alien invasion at all. They kept building and building to it in the series and the second movie is about a serial killer and these episodes had a couple of stand alone stories.

From my point of view all the stories in this mini-series take jabs at the show itself.

Like the last episode. Mulder seemingly decided to say screw it. I'm not gonna dig any deeper.

There were multiple alien arcs, each with bits and pieces that didn't mesh. In the second movie, we saw a working alien ship in Antarctica and evidence that the ETs were here in pre-historic times. How does that fit with what we were shown in the first episode of the current run? So, I don't think that the alien arc was ever a well thought-out story with a beginning, middle, and end. It's as if Chris Carter et al made up the plot as they went along, not wanting to tie everything up neatly just in case they wanted to release another movie.

The MOTW episodes were often more satisfying because they were self-contained. But the one last week just didn't make much sense to me. I'll watch the last two shows, but mostly out of curiosity at this point.

Me thinks they don't want to make progress on the alien DNA story line, just string us along for more silliness. Ironically, at this point, Scully seems more genuinely interested in their cases and Mulder is no longer serious. He might be happier retiring. ;)

There were 2 movies? I only remember the first one, and although aliens were the focus, as I recall that movie left us hanging.

The first movie was kind of a filler between seasons 5 and 6. It is somewhat necessary to watch it before starting season 6 so that you get a lot of things answered and context better filled in.

The second movie, IMO was terrible and came in in 2008 or 2009. It didn't follow either the alien arc or MOTW. Instead it was mostly about finding a kidnapped FBI agent. The movie itself wouldn't have been so bad had they given it a name other than X-Files and used the characters/actors from the series. It wasn't in keeping with any of the X-Files traditions at all. I saw it once and never watched it again as it was probably the single most disappointing film I've ever seen.

I think some of the stories so far have been far-fetched, even for this show. The homeless people one was a good example, and last night was another one.
Mulder went off on this really wild trip from some 'shrooms...except that it turns out all he took was a placebo.
Really?

It was nice to see the Lone Gunmen again, though, if only for a few seconds. And Skinner actually had a funny line or two.

For those wanting to get more into the alien storyline, it looks like that's coming next week. Except the trajectory that arc has taken, don't expect it to be like alien stories from earlier seasons.

Oh...and it looks like they might be grooming Miller and Einstein to be the eventual replacements for Mulder and Scully, if the show should go on that long. Personally I could see that. The actors are agreeable enough.

Last night's episode had me yawning. And I'm a huge fan. The only part I really liked was the brief glimpse of the Lone Gunmen.

I try to skip previews, but did manage to catch a little of what's in store for next week, and it doesn't look they're planning on any kind of closure...just a rebirth of all old thoughts.

The ratings for the six-part series were not very good, so it's likely we won't get any closure on if...
Mulder lives or dies from the infection, if Scully gets sucked up into that spaceship, or if it simply shoots a beam down and blows up the whole darn bridge like it did the girl in the car.

I had high hopes for the show's return, but it kind of felt all over the place, sort of like a smaller of what it has been about in years prior--as an idea it might have sounded good to do something like that, but in execution it was fairly disjointed in places and even felt forced in some sense in various aspects. I'm fairly mixed when it comes to it--I want to like it, and did like various episodes or at least good parts of them, but not so much other parts and just didn't walk away with that much of a good feeling from it all.

So far I have only bought the first two episodes on iTunes. I kind of feel let down with those two and even more, I hate the fact that Scully and Mulder look older (obviously they would) after all this time.

They only had six episodes to work with and they said on one of the iTunes bonus clips that only two would tie in with previous story lines and the other four would be a mix of what the show mostly focused on. The whole Mulder's sister and Scully's baby story lines were never my favorites.

Just watched the last episode and loved it! It brought me back to all the alien arc episodes from the past and keeps the conspiracy alive. I sure hope they make more episodes or another movie to go along with it.

Even David Duchovny alludes to the possibility there could be more by saying on Twitter today that "The truth is on hiatus"

I was also happy to see a cameo by Annabeth Gish too, I really liked her character on the later seasons of the show.

If you're talking about viewership, the ratings been pretty good, above the metrics that would support an additional season - that bold section is a big marketing plus (some fully captured demos are more valuable than just total viewers):

Fox’s reboot of “The X-Files” had a nice bounce back from its low opposite the Grammys last week, growing 14% for its finale and tying with ABC’s similarly rising “The Bachelor” as Monday’s top program among young adults.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, the sixth and final episode of “The X-Files” averaged a 2.4 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall from 8 to 9 p.m., on par with “The Bachelor” for the hour and the night. “X-Files” was Monday’s top-rated program outright in adults 25-54 (3.0/8) and all key male demos.

More than 20 million viewers watched the premiere of “The X-Files” within the first three days of its premiere last month, and the show is tracking as broadcast television’s No. 2-rated drama of the season in adults 18-49, behind only Fox’s “Empire.” It’s unclear, though, if or when the show might return to the network.

That last line is just the general up-the-air-speak since we don't really know the logistics of actually shooting more - Duchovny has been pretty vocal about doing more EPs, but had a [surprising] renewal of Aquarius, and I have a sense of Anderson being sort of ambivalent, money talks, but of course, the balance of ratings vs. cost could either, 1) not be cost effective due to production/salaries, 2) not involve either/both of them, and that's a non-starter for most folks.
