If the in-Store pickup stock is out online for my local stores, can I walk into the local Apple store first thing this morning and expect to find one without a reservation if I get there early enough?

If the stock is unavailable online, probably not.

Checked the stock at my local Apple Store, and it's very limited right now. most are unavailable. Good news for scalpers

Here in northern Louisiana, every Apple store in a 250 mile radius has the iPhone X in stock today. Although, I don't want an X due to the narrow screen.

Narrow screen? It’s almost the width of the Plus. The difference isn’t even noticeable. What’s noticeable is how much easier it is to hold.

Wait what? Where have you been, under a rock? Maybe you didn't hear the news that Apple sold out of the phone in like minutes, about there being limited supplies, about people being pushed back weeks, about stores having very limited quantities to sell on launch day? Something about if you did not pre order there might not be a phone in your future until 2018!

I own a business, I understand the hype trade, i get it, and I'm ok with yes people wanting something new. However that launch was a friggin de-boggle to real deal people trying to actually buy the phone to use it for themselves, and stories of people waiting weeks if not months was wide spread. Only to see it release and ME MYSELF being able to get one on launch day with a heck of alot of people and hearing the same thing all over and now today seeing that so many stores had stock all over NY is sounding alot different than what was being said a few days ago.

When you have scores of people waltzing into Apple today and just buying one and canceling an order that has been stuck on a Nov 17th-24th delivery date well that seems to me that the shortage stories seem to be a little bit far fetched. Whatever, got my phone, and I'm seeing others getting theirs as well. Moving forward unless Apple fixes their so called early pre order upgrade process, I'll be one of those that just does not stress and goes nice and easy and gets my phone the day it gets released.

Ah, no. Apple never said there was going to be a shortage, independent analysts did. They say that with every launch and I never believe them. I got burned with the initial launch of the first iPad and it took a couple weeks to track one down. I also got burned with the 6 Plus by staying up so late to pre-order. That’s the first time I ever pre-ordered and the last time I’ll pre-order. My mentality is I’ll get one when I get one. I’ve gotten every single iPhone since the 2nd generation, in store, a day or two after launch. I didn’t even decide I wanted the X until yesterday morning when I saw they were available. Apple is a business. Apple has stores. Apple needs to have products in stores. Since the 2nd generation iPhone the only launch that hasn’t gone exactly the same is the first iPad. Nothing new with the launch of the X.

Are the updates on Monday morning for stock that's expected to arrive later that day (Tuesday pickup)?

Supposedly they keep some stock from a shipment for the next day, might keep all the X units till the next day and sell only what they got the day before. Not sure if I believe them. I would say best bet is to check early Tuesday am and see if they have stock from Monday’s delivery.

I’ve been through this since the first iPhone, I’ve still to this day never missed a launch phone.

I disagree though, Tim Cook was actually the one quoted as saying finding one may be scarce in the beginning, and the analysts jumped on it and ran. First it was screens, and than the camera module for Face ID, seriously this is very close to 2018 and buying a phone shouldn’t be this hard, no matter who makes it. And to be honest this was the biggest deboggle of a pre order, the last 2 years were extremely easy IMO. Apple needed the hype this quarter since the 8 and 8plus demand was almost non existent.

getting one moving into Tuesday should not be as hard as it was at launch. They are usually stocked heading into Monday and than have a Delivery leading into Tuesday morning. However this is contingent on them having units ready to go and that whole shortage thing was BS. I remember after the 5 launch you couldn’t really find units for a few weeks.

I had a delayed pre-order and cancelled for in store pickup yesterday.

One thing I noticed was no less than half a dozen people buying/setting up iPhone 7’s.

I think those in the media will call out the so called lack of demand for the iPhone X but let’s recognize how smart Apple’s strategy is right now..

iPhone 7 and 7+
iPhone SE
iPhone 8 and 8+
iPhone X

Let’s not forget in the end the mainstream consumer just wants an iPhone. Now, depending on what’s most important to them, they have more options than ever. One could argue this is apples best lineup ever and there truly is an iPhone for everyone, you just need to decided what’s important to you.

I asked this in another thread but no one really had a good answer. If I buy an iPhone for my specific carrier at an Apple retail store do they make you activate it on the spot? Or can I activate it myself later on?

Sunday is a bad day hunting for the X likely until Monday when the next shipment arrives.

I had to go to 5th Avenue nyc store to get one. That store is open 24 hrs so I do not know with all the people there looking for one how I was able to reserve it 7am this morning and pick it up at 10am.

I just searched for a T-Mobile phone and found one that is 64gb in Canoga Park, CA. I got it, but I want 256gb. Don't know if I should exchange it for 256 later. :/

they don't open the box.

Confirmed. They do not open the box.

Thanks! So you just pay for it and walk out with it? I’ve never bought an iPhone from an Apple Store so I have no idea.

It depends on how you pay for it.

If you pay in cash, they can just sell the unit as is, and will not plug in a phone number (unless you want them to port the line in).

If you pay with Tmoblie jump, att next, etc (basically some sort of fianancing with the carrier); then they’d need to port the line in. Most would encourage you to open it and make sure it works there and then but you don’t need to if you don’t want to.

I chose 64gb because I'd rather put the money toward Apple Care than have extra storage on the device. I had to act quickly yesterday morning, thanks to finding this thread by "dumb luck" as someone else here said, and all options were available to me at 7am. Color was easy: match my stainless Apple Watch.

Yup straight out the door and open it up in your car giggling like a little kid

Lovely. That answers my question completely. Thanks for that! Now to check the Apple Store app obsessively until one shows up nearby!

They let you choose. They ask if you want to activate with them on the spot (you still get to unbox it yourself) or later.

Assuming you got it at the Apple Topanga Store, keep in mind that the Apple return period is 14 calendar days from day of purchase, not 30 days. If you decide to exchange it for the 256gb version, you'll have to find one at an Apple Store within the next two weeks. Shouldn't be too hard but don't let that two week period slip by.

Went to one in the mall here in Chicago ( well orland park) short line I was 10th, I arrived like 10 min before they opened. Surprising most people there were making appt for genius bar or to have something fixed. could have got one but it wasn't the one I wanted couple spots again got the last verzion phone ( it's not even what he wanted by eye way smh) I could have gotten the tmobile one but it was space Grey I want the silver and Verizon model. I'm paying in full so I can't do the pick up instore option and I have tmobile this time I'll wait mid week and try again I'm in no rush I usually wait for the sim free anyways

you can do it later. I just came home with mine and did not activate it. They gave the option

Yes. That is exactly correct. If you are paying full price, they ask you what model, you tell them, you pay, you walk out with a sealed box. They do not activate in store (unless you ask them to). So there's no account created.

The SIM that comes in the phone is whatever carrier you said, but just pop in the SIM from wherever else you want, and you're good to go.

I just did it - walked in yesterday, bought Sprint model (A1865, which is the same as the Verizon model), came home and even before powering up the first time, I popped in my AT&T SIM. Powered up it up and was good to go.

ALL apple-sold iPhones are unlocked. Specifying the carrier only means it comes with one of those sims installed. If you try to order online, however, they will verify you are customer of that carrier (with the exception of T-Mobile - you can order that one online without carrier check, if paying in full). Even if you did buy a phone *from Apple* for Verizon and activated in-store or online, you could cancel at any time since from Verizon's perspective, you are bringing your own device. I've been told, if you never power the phone on with the Verizon sim in it, you won't even be charged the activation fee, but I don't have first-hand experience with that.

It's only if you buy through a carrier are they locked to that carrier. Presumably because you are likely financing through them as well. If you buy outright from the carrier, they will unlock it for you have some period (It's like 30-60 days). Verizon, by FCC rule, has to sell their LTE phones unlocked because it was part of some spectrum deal they made.

Oh, so I knew about verizon models, you can buy a sprint full price iphone X and it's also unlocked as well for all carriers?

Also to answer on why they still have stock. I was told if people do not pick up their reservations in whatever time frame. . . 24hrs maybe, they make them avail for purchase. That is how I was able to snag mine today which apparently was the only one
