How so? If anything they made it harder for people who want to buy it and use it for them selves?

I was up and pre ordered and went through that nightmare, all while so many got pushed back weeks, meanwhile yesterday and today many many people are able to just go into the store and buy up to two phones and than re sell them. If anything this been a much easier time to buy vs many times in the past.

where are people buying phones without the preactivation requirement?

I keep reading in multiple threads about AT&T customers who need to cancel the phone they pre-ordered in order to be able to reserve one at an Apple store.

Perhaps they are in some program that gives them a new phone every year or something? I have a three-year-old iPhone 6, it’s well out of contract. Any thoughts here?

I was paying upfront and had to cancel both preorders I had. I initially tried just to cancel the Apple one, but it still wouldn't go through the carrier verification until I also canceled my ATT preorder. I dunno if it makes a difference, but I had two preorders because we (well, my wife) were in the carrier verification snafu that resulted in the reservation e-mail. So we got the "reserved" Apple phone and also placed an ATT preorder that was supposed to ship 11/2-11/10. I canceled both and then the same-day pickup order went through.

Guys you won’t find any stock today at any NYC stores most likely. We have the NYC marathon going on and most deliveries will happen tonight into tomorrow.

So if I check the stock for pick up is that all the inventory they have? Meaning then they have no inventory for walk ins ? I want to buy a Verizon model pay in full but have tmobile so I can’t buy online to pick up so I need to go to the store . Rather not waste my time ya know if they don’t have any or by the time the actually open they are all reserved

Apple store in Colorado still have the gray available today for pickup. Looks like all the silver are gone until Monday.

Overall, I'm surprised at the stock levels. I was able to order one online with local pickup at my local Verizon store - that was at 8:30am Friday morning.

I had to cancel my Nov 17-24 pre-order, wait 5m for my phone to be eligible again, then re-order for in-store pickup.
So stupid... If I didn't just happen to check the store today, I'd be waiting 3 more weeks. Plus I got up at 3am for the pre-order....

Seems like pre-ordering is just stupid and Apple apparently doesn't know too much about their stock.

How many preorders have you done?

I have never not gotten my order placed in time to get an iPhone on launch day in any year that has had preordering as an option. And I have upgraded every year since the first iPhone.

Trust me. Preordering is not stupid. The most phones I’ve preordered in a single year was three (we are a family of 5). This year, we got 2, and nearly got a third, but the date slipped from 11/3 to 11/17-11/24 on the last stage of checkout. I found a phone last night using iStockNow, so really, how terrible is it?

Yeah, you sit up late if you’re in the US, but it’s ONE night. And, it’s kinda fun. You can do it from the comfort of your own house, even.

This year was the most challenging preorder because the Apple Store wouldn’t even let me or my son in until about 3:09. The app wouldn’t work properly for us, either. The only time I can recall that much problem getting into the store was the 4s launch. That one was a hot mess.

The worst thing that can happen at preorder is missing the launch day window. At least this year’s iPhone stock at the Apple store is not like last year’s. I’d still be waiting for my husband’s phone.

TL;DR

Don’t give up on preorder. Just up your game. :)

I suspect the high price is stopping / putting many people off. It's availablity is surprising

The stores don’t make you do anything if you just walk in. You cannot RESERVE without a phone account to tie to it. You can walk in, though. Limit 2 per customer.

They could be Christmas gifts. Who knows?

Our local carrier stores (AT&T) have none.

I have to say I've been very disappointed with pre-ordering from apple in recent years, I've gotten the product quicker from apple retail or 3rd party for the last 4-5 products . Last one was Apple TV 4K , in stock 3rd party , one month from Apple online :(

I think the 8/8 plus took some sales.

Right now, there seems to be precious little stock outside of Apple. They’re holding stock to sell in stores. They got hammered last year for having none. The Ahrendts method of “just order it and don’t bother visiting a store” is bad for add-on sales.

Awww. That is a run of bad luck with preorders. I’d be frustrated, too. Only advice I can share is to have Apple Store app open on phone and iPad, website up on Mac, all items favorited, all credit cards in Apple Pay with proper expiry dates, and make sure your cell phone bill is current. Last year, mine was due the day before preorder. I totally forgot to pay it. At 3:01 am, AT&T called it “late.”

And, we were buying 2 units FULL PRICE. I had to quickly pay my bill before I could complete preorder. Got one phone from Apple and had to hop to AT&T to make the other purchase and get both by launch day. That was harrowing. :D

Just out of curiosity I checked the local Apple Store and they have the 256 space grey X in stock for pickup.

Will not hurt to try it out!

If I can type on the keyboard, it might be a keeper.
Glad you decided to try it after all. How are you liking the phone? Space gray or silver this time?

I cancelled my Nov 17 preorder only to have stock go out the door before it refreshed and could nab one in store. Oh well there are 5 stores in my area and I will likely snag one this week.

Keyboard was my biggest worry and I have found it is just fine. Face ID works so well you forget about it and the phone just opens.
So far liking very much!

Let me get this straight. I’m on T-Mobile and want a Verizon phone so I can jump to Verizon at a later date. I cannot order the phone online but I can just walk in and buy a Verizon model without any issues at full price?

If yes, at full price,is Apple charging a Verizon activation fee?

Yes. That is exactly correct. If you are paying full price, they ask you what model, you tell them, you pay, you walk out with a sealed box. They do not activate in store (unless you ask them to). So there's no account created.

The SIM that comes in the phone is whatever carrier you said, but just pop in the SIM from wherever else you want, and you're good to go.

I just did it - walked in yesterday, bought Sprint model (A1865, which is the same as the Verizon model), came home and even before powering up the first time, I popped in my AT&T SIM. Powered up it up and was good to go.

ALL apple-sold iPhones are unlocked. Specifying the carrier only means it comes with one of those sims installed. If you try to order online, however, they will verify you are customer of that carrier (with the exception of T-Mobile - you can order that one online without carrier check, if paying in full). Even if you did buy a phone *from Apple* for Verizon and activated in-store or online, you could cancel at any time since from Verizon's perspective, you are bringing your own device. I've been told, if you never power the phone on with the Verizon sim in it, you won't even be charged the activation fee, but I don't have first-hand experience with that.

It's only if you buy through a carrier are they locked to that carrier. Presumably because you are likely financing through them as well. If you buy outright from the carrier, they will unlock it for you have some period (It's like 30-60 days). Verizon, by FCC rule, has to sell their LTE phones unlocked because it was part of some spectrum deal they made.

No.

After ATT screwed up my order, I was just going to not get the X and not bother. I saw the post today by dumb luck about Apple stores showing store availability and have a 256GB, ATT Silver waiting for me at one of my local stores. I guess I got the last one because I immediately went back in to check another store and all sold out now

Ugh stupid Apple App makes you have a account with Att or Verizon to buy their models. They were all around me at 6am. I need a model to work with TMO so either would work. Haven’t seen any TMobile ones hit store for pickup anywhere near me. ‍♂️

My wife and my son both had online orders placed for a T-Mobile iPhoneX with ship date ranges of mid to late Nov. I checked local pickup yesterday morning and my local Apple store in Broomfield, CO had stock of the exact sizes and colors they wanted. We placed "pickup in store" orders early in the A.M. yesterday and headed over. We waited about 1 hour in line for our turn and picked up both iPhones. We had no issues cancelling the online orders. I got my Verizon iPhone from Best Buy (order placed on 10/27). So now we have a happy family full of X :apple:

If the in-Store pickup stock is out online for my local stores, can I walk into the local Apple store first thing this morning and expect to find one without a reservation if I get there early enough?
