I'm in "wait and see" mode, but I'm wondering if MS isn't learning all the wrong lessons, i.e., they "keep fighting the last war."

MS thought they could win this console generation by some weird combo of Kinect and TV integration. Instead, they got their butts kicked by Sony, who had better specs and games.

So, MS retools and delivers (finally) something with great specs...but they need to present some good IP and games.

I will admit, they have themselves painted in a corner a bit, they really can't have an exclusive on the Scorpio and not make it available for the PC...but, generally, that shouldn't really hurt them going against Sony. It would help if the studios they bought initially delivered some great games, but a lot of the original creative talent have left (I'm thinking of Rare and Bungie, off the top of my head).

I think it's fairly obvious it will cost more than $399.00. More so around $500.00, maybe $450.00. We all know Sony will drop the price of the Pro to $350.00/bundle package when the Scorpio does launch.

I agree with what's being stated, Microsoft needs a smash hit exclusive when this console launches to reaffirm its potential and ultimately debut what this console can boast. It only makes sense for Microsoft to release a power house title or exclusive.

I think the vast majority of gamers won't buy it because it's 500$ or a little bit more, plus most don't have a 4K TV to see the real improvement in graphics.

Most gamers will still opt for the 250$ PS4 or Xbox One S. It's half the price and can play all games.

So, if this turns out to happen and Scorpio doesn't sell too much due to price, why would developers release better versions of their games for it?

On the other hand, I'm excited to see what they do with VR in Scorpio. I hope it's something like the Vibe.

I agree with you about some gamers have not made the transition to 4K/HDR TV and the adaptation is still in progress. I think if Microsoft charges around the $500 mark, perhaps they could include an exclusive title with the console, which I think would at least help with sales. Also, Microsoft is launching the console at the perfect time of the year with holiday sales in full swing. They do have that factor on their side.

Specs alone aren't gonna do it.

My PS4 Pro has horsepower and first party stellar exclusives since naughty dog is Sony

TLOU and uncharted 1-4 was bliss

You would think that Microsoft would learn from both their own mistake ($499 XBox One w/ Kinect Launch) and Sony's PS3 Launch:

They're gonna have it even more difficult if PS4 Pro gets a discount or comes bundled with games (maybe God of War 4?). Same with Nintendo Switch (maybe with Zelda, Mario Kart or Mario Odyssy).

Plus discounts on Black Friday will make those both consoles sell a lot too.

PS4 Pro could come bundled with Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted Legacy, etc. Sony has the games and the price in it's favour. Nintendo will have some of its exclusives games, price (cheaper than Scorpio) and portability.

Let's see what Microsoft announces on E3, but I don't see it possible for them to release more than one exclusive game for the end of the year if it's something new announced in E3.

Can't wait for E3 this year! But yes, it's Microsofts time to debut on one of the largest stages.

Considering this is the year of Scorpio and Nintendo Switch, I'm very curious as to what Sony will announce and show on E3. They will need to pull the big guns in order to crush the competition.

I believe they will announce God of War 4 releases this year, more videos of TLOU 2, new exclusives announced, etc. They need to pull attention away from the Switch and Scorpio.

I don't necessarily think Sony needs to pull attention away from The Nintendo switch. The Swirchis a league on its own and doesn't necessarily compete on the level of a platform console that Microsoft does.

Although I do agree, if they have some major title releases are coming, this certainly would be of assistance to keep the focus on the Pro and keep players intrigued why they would want to upgrade to the Pro or debut more games that are Pro related.

At first I didn't like this strategy. Upgrading (not just form factor, etc.) but power of systems during the same generation was something I was completely against. I felt like the Wii U was almost this but not marketed as it (love my Wii U by the way).

However, once I traded in my Xbox One for the 'S' I started changing my mind. Now with the specs released for the Scorpio I'm completely on board with this.

But, a big part of me liking this is because Microsoft has been working to constantly make 360 games run on the Xbox One. What if over the next 10 years the Xbox One keeps evolving and getting more and more powerful, but you can play everything from the 360 all the way through (and maybe even original Xbox if they decide to go that route). Game developers already know how to develop and can implement regular HD, 4k, 8k? for their games. Every so often Microsoft removes one of the lesser systems from it's lineup (Xbox 360 last year, original Xbox One next, 'S' after that, etc etc).

Old games upscale some. Eventually you reach a point on an older system that the newer games don't look as good and you WANT to upgrade your Xbox One. With each generation of systems to get the latest games you HAVE to upgrade your system. Having an entire Xbox lineup on one system from the original to the most powerful/modern would be amazing.

I have a PS4 slim now. I'm not a big PS fan but wanted it for VR. I'd spend a lot more money on a PS/games if I had access to a majority of their generations of games.

If the Switch continues to get more powerful with each iteration and gives you handheld at what is roughly a 1/2 gen behind the other systems it can remain a great alternative. On my 4K tv it looks great as is.

Just my opinion but I'm preordering a Scorpio and am getting another 4k tv for when it hits. Plus I like having a back catalogue of games since I've been playing since the atari days.

Ok guys, need some advice.

Right now where I live the Xbox One S is in offer until tomorrow at 180€, down 60€ from 240€. It's the 500GB Minecraft bundle.

I've already got the PS4 slim and I'm very happy with it and got more than 20 games waiting to be played. On the Xbox I would play only some exclusives that I've always wanted to play, like Alan Wake, Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, Quantum Break and State of Decay 2. Not much apart from that. Dead Rising 4 I would play on PS4 when it comes in the future (they say).

Do you guys think its worth it to buy for 180€ only to play a few games? We don't know the future in terms of exclusives. Maybe another Gears of War, another Forza, another Halo (but I'm not too much into this one), etc.

I also want to buy the Switch at some point to play Zelda, Mario, Super Smash Bros, etc. And I think the money would be better served there, since Nintendo will have more exclusives, awesome titles as Zelda and Mario and Smash, it's a portable also, but it's twice the price of the Xbox One S (340€ with the Pro controller vs 180€ the One S), which comes with a BR 4K player also!

I have until tomorrow to decide, when the deal expires. It's an awesome price for a new console, not second hand. All multiplats I would buy for PS4. Also I see digital games being more expensive on the Xbox over the PS4, and Scorpio is coming, but that will be 400/500€ and I still don't have a 4K TV and don't know if I want to buy such an expensive console just for the exclusives of Xbox...

Advice?

I was in a similar boat but with regards to the PS4. I already had an Xbox One S and knew I was getting a Switch on launch. But I did end up getting a PS4 Slim and VR just for VR games. Quantity of games really isn't why I get systems, it's more quality. I'd rather have 2-3 games that I enjoy and play a lot than lots of decent games.

I haven't regretted buying the PS4 Slim and PSVR (even though I only have a handful of games). It's fun. My kids and wife have had fun too. We maybe only play it once a week but it's worth it.

I love the Xbox One S. I did get a 4K (HDR) tv and it's great. I grabbed a few 4K DVDs and they look amazing. The thing about Xbox nowadays is if you are a Live member you get lots of free games every month. They add up and I've got a huge catalog of games I had little interest in but that now I want to play.

i can tell you just buy it! Forza Horizon is a stunning game, perfect in all ways, and Gears is fantastic too, great fun. Xbox are also much better value as the games with gold each month are much better then the PSN Plus games each month. I can't recommend the Xbone S enough.

I wouldn't buy Gold since I don't play online anymore. The Game Pass is interesting though.

I rarely play online as well. But just get the free games is good enough. Yes, there is no choice, but MS do gives out good games once or twice every season. So, the value is there. The scenario is like this.

1) Play online - have to buy game once they are released. Enjoy the games online at the best timing. -> No choice, must join Gold

2) Play offline - rarely buy games when they were new. Benefit from almost all free games because haven't buy them yet. -> Worth to join Gold.

3) Play offline - but buy games when they were new. Rarely benefit from the free games because already own them. Do NOT join Gold. It's just waste of money.

It depends on if you want the best graphics. If yes, you can forget about the Switch. Or even the XB1 S.

If not, your offer for XB1 S is good to go. It's a nice machine. TBH, I love my XB1 much much more than the PS4 (even PS4 has much more exclusive games to play). And there is no point for you to wait for the Scorpio which most likely will be very expensive (if compare to your current offer).

What?

"XBOX SCORPIO: NO MORE SINGLE PLAYER AND NETFLIX FOR GAMES?"

I doubt if it's true, but I won't be too surprise either.

MS seems never learn, and never listen. They went the complete wrong way on XB1. And they may go further south on the Scropio. The XB team is no longer a gaming department, but a home entertainment department.

If the Scropio end up is just a super expensive TV box. I will be more than happy to save my money.

There is just a thin line between inovative and stupid idea.

It is the public to blame.

Yes, people have no problems paying large cable and internet bills per month - why not a videogame monthly fee? We pay it now with XBox Live/PSN+.

CBS is putting their newest Star Trek Series, "Discovery" behind "a pay wall" and you have to subscribe to CBS All Access to watch it, not to mention all the cable/internet only programming that is out there.

Microsoft wants to go to a "service" model - I don't blame them - that's where the money is...

What?

This if true is RIP Xbox.

If people want a HTPC, they will build their own cheap one or just buy an AppleTV.

Actually I blame MS. Did people really want Office 365? Not really. But when you are forced to keep using the latest Office and it's only available as a subscription model, you get it because you need it for your job or other reasons.

On the other hand few people need an Xbox for work or other related reasons. So people will not go for the service model. Also you have the other issue. Some people can't afford or don't want Pay/cableTV or a subscription gaming service like this. Others already have enough monthly fees to pay that they can't afford yet another one "future Xbox service model".

I really think XBox see it working for things like Office 365 and are trying to equate that to the Xbox when in reality thw two in terms of why people will be purchasing them are totally different. This is a slippery slope for the Xbox to go down and could blow up in MS face.

Yeah, MS forget that there is no real competitor to Office. But there is something called PS4 on the market, which is even cheaper, better (performance), and more games avail.

I know quite a few gamers that rely on the game disc resell value. Without that option, they simply can't afford to play console games (or only can afford to play very few games, that mean the console itself will become relatively expensive, which also means a big NO for them).

Think about $20/month is $240 a year. People that buy 4 $60 games per year end up with the same cost. Instead of 4 games, you get an entire library.

Some of my most favorite games currently are download only.

I asked about putting EVERSPACE on a physical disc and the devs kinda shunned the issue. I can see it would be better to put the money into the game rather than onto a disc. Unfortunately, with the big studios, the money would go into their profits.

Do what Sega tried to do, subscribe to SegaNet and get a free Dreamcast...

In the case of next gen consoles, charge $399 ($499 for Scorpio?) for the console and give a free 6mo/year of game subscription with it - you don't even need to buy any games when you purchase the unit.

When I bought my first PS4, I downloaded and played the free games on that right from the start...

I am totally OK for that. I never sell my disc anyway. Therefore, download actually works better for me. I don't need to take care the disc, and can play the same games on 2 consoles at the same time.

However, for my friends, they usually get the game in day 1 and finish the game in few days, then sell the game with less than $3 lost, sometime can even make money. For them, $240 per year is way too much. And that's equivalent to 80 games cost, not 4.

That's exactly what the devs hate - people buying games at resell - they make no money from that...
