I really hope they have a simple setting in the OS where you can say if you prefer performance (i.e. framerate) or quality (eye candy) and then have the console automatically apply that to every game that supports it.
I don't think that will happen. It'll be an option with each game. That's because what constitutes performance mode or graphics mode will be different for each game.

Well, yes - the idea is that you choose which one you prefer in general and the game applies its own performance / quality profile. That might be any number of variables like reducing resolution or detail for performance, turning on ray tracing and 4K for quality. Things that only mean something to the most hardcore PC nerds, like ambient occlusion, supersampling, temporal antialiasing, and so on.

Even if you have to go into the options to set it for each game, it's only going to be an A/B sort of thing. They won't show all those things to console players, so why not have it done centrally, via a setting in the OS? That way you never have to dig around under the hood.

I agree that they probably won't do it, because they had system-wide preferences on the 360 but abandoned them on the Xbox One. It was such a useful feature - you could choose all sorts of stuff, like how you want the controller set up in first-person games, whether you like in-car view and automatic gears in racing games, etc.

Also, I suppose if you don't realise you have performace mode turned on all the time, and they don't alert you when startung a game, you might wonder why your games don't look so good.

had no interest in the new xBox until they bought Bethesda..... Fallout being exclusive or Elder scrolls is game over. I am still playing Fall out 4. 5 years later and still the best game on the PS4.

Give me Fall out new VEGAS 2!!

One thing that has struck my mind is that the Series X isn't only for those who play in 4.

At 1440p, Series X should be capable of higher framerates than the Series S at the same resolution.

UK pre-orders start in just over and hour.

Good luck everyone!

Stockinformer UK + one or two non listed retailers.
I could say good luck everyone, t.b.h. I'm getting too old for this, though decided on Digi S series if I get bid in today.
Thanks. That's a useful website. I hardly ever pre-order or fomo. However, with more Covid19 restrictions looming and thinning levels of new content on telly, a gaming console will be one of the few sustainable entertainments this autumn and winter.

Just snagged my Series X direct from MS. In my cart on exactly 08:00 and then 10 scary minutes trying to check out with timeout and page not found errors. Felt like some side-quest!

HOLY CR*P! I managed to pre-order a Series X.....just.

07:00am I loaded Currys and John Lewis websites and apps on my laptop and phone and kept clicking around until 0800 to ensure my sessions is already live and that I wouldn't have to queue to enter the websites.

08:00am Within a seconds I clicked "Pre-order now" on the Xbox series landing page. Boom! "You are now in a queue to pre-order the Xbox Series. There are 24,000 users ahead of you". At this point I just laughed out loud and clapped my hands.

08:04am I couldn't even find the Xbox Series on the John Lewis website or in their app. I kept trying for several minutes

08:10am Microsoft and Argos websites were loading surprisingly well. I tried for a few minutes to buy an X on MS and had issues adding to basket and visiting the basket until it said "The page is no longer available".

08:12am. I managed to complete a pre-order on Argos for a Series X paid for in full. It was somewhat slow but faster than I anticipated given the 24,000 user queue on Curry's which I'm in 12,000th position after 29min.

My tip to others who will pre-order in other countries is to focus on getting a pre-order through on the less popular retailers. :)

It appears that the Series X has sold out quicker than than the S. It would be interesting to know what their stock ratios are like.

s that X or S and is that with the repayment contract which I'm not using,
Decent deal though if that's what you have purchased,
Anyone who pre-orders an S or X from Amazon will be emailed the discount code regardless of how they are paying for the console.

@Macalicious2011
I had shocking time with Argos+Microsoft store.
Gutted missed Nectar points via Argos
My theory is that:

Retailers with the greatest demand are those that offer:
-Pre-orders for only £5(This attracts scalpers, fence-sitters and those who don't have the money yet.)
-All-access
-Payments in installments
-Buy now pay later

Retailers that didn't sell out quickly:
-Require full payment of the console at pre-order

Surprisingly I just managed to pre-order a Series X on Currys even though the queue page stated that the Series X is sold out with the Series S as the only one left to buy. I'm keeping both my pre-orders at Argos and Currys until the delivery of one of them is confirmed, or I have seen any value add-offers for Gamepass or TVs.

Odd... I didn't join's a queue on MS. I was already logged in and on the Series X page at 08:00. The "configure" button became live so clicked that and added the console to my cart. Few errors and timeouts trying to complete the checkout process, but was done by 08:08. I ordered my Scorpio direct from MS in 2017 so was always going to order from MS again. TBH MS is the only place I trust to fulfil all their pre-orders for Day One delivery and not over subscribe. When it arrives I'll get the extended warranty from MS like last time.

Only myself to part blame -attempted to use an inactive card, before correcting and re order, Argos have since confirmed No orders went through on their systems.
Card providers have two Argos orders showino one of which they advise should go through -Guess I get the unwanted allow 3-5days.
And Amazon have not seen my latest order declining though I've to re check later today.
Quite an experience 1st pre order device,IPad drove me mad at times, though one successful order.
stock checker Uk wasn't as fast as it could have been.

Cross gen C.O.D. Cold War is available -x box one version-upgrade to X series version from release.
Are there going to be any 3rd party online retailers, or shall I purchase this via Activision/M.S. Store.

UK folks if like me you missed out this morning, head to game UK quick. Just managed to pre order the series X this evening. Guess they have allocated more stock. All gone through and email confirmation received.

Man I effed up. I had my mind on my doggo who I had to take to the emergency vet (getting herniated discs in his back as he gets older) and I saw a tweet that said pre-sale orders start at 10pm Central. I had the date of the 22nd already in my head, so in quick calculations I figured I would be able to pre-order at 9pm tonight on the 22nd :|

Well, hopefully I can get one for Christmas.
