Great news, this really helps with my reservations about getting a gen 1 iPad Pro. Still concerned about the missing 3D Touch though. Decisions decisions...

Maybe for consumer-oriented behaviours. As a software developer, I'm not sure I'd be half as productive on an iPad. The Apple Smart Keyboard doesn't even have an Esc key... how could they have overlooked that important productivity detail?
Not really a file manager and a ide of your choice could fix that.

I don't think that iPads will be getting 3D touch, personally I think they'll get force touch. The next real jump in UI is about 3 years away, with REAL haptic technology ;)

Not really a terminal, a file manager , and a way to have multiple desktop. Could make the iPad a stronger reason why someone should consider it as they everyday computer.
I don't think iPads are ever supposed to replace the code monkey. This is a STRONG contender for replacing PCs for "creative" pros however.

Exactly, the average consumer/computer user simply doesn't understand the difference between RAM and hard drive space (I deal with them every day). Apple does it's best to make things clear, anyone can understand "the brain of your device is 1.8x faster" or "Games are going to be smoother than ever", but good luck getting anyone off the street to understand "paging will occur less often".

They could say it now has 2 x the memory ;)

That's an interesting thought, the iPhone and iPad pro now both have 3d touch so what about the iPad Air and mini? Apple didn't update those and we know Apple eventually applies everything down the line. So people who may be interested in the iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 4 might be ripped off if they buy it this yr and Apple puts in the 3d haptic feedback next yr.

Sure, but Apple likes to keep their marketing points like they do their product lines: small and focused. Does a consumer really care about "twice the memory!" vs "your amazing camera just got even better"?

At the end of the day, I don't think consumers care much about RAM, it's part of the "it should just work" mentality. RAM in my mind is not a feature like a camera, it's just part of the system that should work well, so advertising it seems a bit misguided.

That's just my opinion though.

There are some of us that actually do real work on our OS (computer programmer here), not just read emails. I don't see myself using Xcode on an arm processor.

Why not? I've done software development for about a decade, a lot of it using Xcode, and an iPad Pro will very likely spec faster than 2 of the linux servers, 2 of the MacBook Pros, and 1 of the Mac Pro towers on which I've developed software professionally. I thought those servers and x86 Macs to be plenty usable.

For iOS (watchOS,tvOS) app development, building ARM code provides far more trustworthy test results than using the x86 iOS Simulator. No reason not to do that Xcode build on an ARM system and save tons of download time.

Of course, I'd still send big CAD simulations and machine learning stuff to the server farm (or cloud), but I'd do that no matter what CPU my desktop was running.

Are you new here?

The biggest excuse given on this very forum for why it's okay for Apple to ship underspec'ed devices is "Most people don't know the difference, therefore it's okay."

The Unwashed should not be the motivating drivers of advancement.

Agreed, but, I can't call the 5S "underspec'ed". Works very well for me, as a smartphone. Maybe not as phablet.

Band 12 + 2gb memory = HELLLLLLL YEAHHHHHHHH

It is even better than that. It looks like the most portable across different countries and carriers ever. I was looking at phones last fall (has it changed since?), and discovered that even now, most cell phones, even high end phones, only supported a very few data bands. For people who travel internationally, the 6S looks like the best ever.

I think 3D touch makes a TON of sense tied with the haptic engine, because it makes your phone feel "alive" in a sense in your hand. Now iPads are NOT going to get that experiencing because even though you may hold them from time to time, they are used mostly as a swiping/tapping input. To me the 3D Touch doesn't make sense.

What DOES make sense however, is something apple/Disney have been developing for many years now (along with Senseg who announced late last year that they have teamed up in applying their tech with a "major industry leader"), and that is TRUE haptic technology. Now what makes more sense, 3D Touch on an iPad so that you get a slightly different click when you tap (verses a completely different experience on a phone, which you whole hand's sense of touch is involved in) OR A SCREEN THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MATERIALS?

The next big leap in iPad's are going to be when you can drag your finger across a piece of wood and feel the grain, actually feel the nuance in a piece of fabric on a shirt you are looking to order online, feel the strain in the slingshot in Angry Birds?

No I don't think iPads will ever get 3D Touch, the pipeline for REAL haptics incorporated into screens is only 2-3 years out from mass manufacture (I've been watching the field for years now). I think Apple is focused on bringing true haptic technology to consumers.

http://www.senseg.com/experience/senseg-experience <-For anyone that has no idea what I'm talking about.

EDIT:
And wouldn't you know it, the Senseg page has been taken down, only a few short months after their announcement of teaming up with a major industry leader.

I may have to bite the bullet and get a 6S+ if this is true. Tired of constant page reloads on my 6 Plus.

This is the year that Congress de-bundles cables, Apple knows this damn well, which is the whole point of releasing tvOS this year. ;)

I love people who say Apple doesn't announce RAM because they're not into that kind of business, while they keep talking everytime about their new processor and how it blows everything else.

The problem is RAM changes so seldom, it's not a point where they can bring up each keynote and say it improves. And the fact that Apple devices almost always offer less ram than the competition . I agree RAM is not an area they lead in and not worth stating in the keynotes where time is of essence.

Yea what about the mini 4. I swear I'll return mine if it's still using 1gb of ram!
